The question as to whether or not the assembly is a joke in Gil- liamCountv is well Droven bv the fact that at the convention kali) in thia i;tv lacf Saturday but seven committeemen out if thirteen were present At the first Tnxtino rllxl for June A I it was impossible to get a quo rum and therefore it was neces saryto postpone the convention until a later date in order . tp round up every committeeman passible and at the next conven- tion. last Saturday, there were tresent teven. lust enouah for a auorum. Seven committeemen in rinsed onnvuntinii tn oWt I ten delegates to the state con- vention to represent the people of Gilliam County, a representa- uon in which the people have nothing whatever to say. Does- n t it sound like a joke: . 1 his method of selecting delegates to carry the wishes of the people to the general convention is even worse than the old-time methods Under the former regime, pre cinct primaries were held thus giving the people a chance to express their opinions as to the fitness of the candidates at least but under the present system the people were simply ignored. xso one, or at ie; outside of the XT . It would help to fill up you know." Yes we might do that We havn't the least idea on earth that it would hurt us, and it would as he suggests, help to fill up. We might do all this, but at the same time we are glad we do not have to do it unless we feel like it. It would not hurt him, either, to come around and say: "Give me a column or a half column of space for an ad' vertisement, and here is the money for it." By doing this he would become a deserter to that grand army of deadheads who expect the newspapers to con tinually note the inprovements they make, by giving them free puffs, and for which they never pay a cent It is high time for all classes to know that a news paper is not a philanthropic prop osition but a business enterprise, the same as a dry goods store or a grocery, run for a living for its owner. Several of the assembly or gans. tnroughout tne state are . . a , . rnntendint? that the assembly is the only way in which the Rep- yblican party can be held as unit, can be kept trom being divided, when as a matter of fact 4-I.a ecaamhlir ifaolf la PQIieinnrl " more Uisseiloiun Hi mc lautLO ui the Republicans than any other cause. The Republican party does need unity but it cannot come through the assembly but only through some measure which will meet with the appro val of the majority at lea3t of the followers of Republican principles. Uncle Sam is counting his timber wealth on the slopes of theT5scade Mountains. Expert timwr cruisers in the employ of the Government are at work making tbe estimate and it is ex- pected it will take all this sum-j mer and next to complete the! cruise" of the water shed of the Willamete River and its tribut aries in the Cascade Reserve. The land will be classified and the timber segregated into log ging units. This is the first at tempt, so far as known, of the Government to take an inven tory of its timber resources. An exchange advocates a plan whereby young ladies attending church in the evening can regis ter their names in the church vestibule, so that the young men who are in the habit or linger ing around the church door can see whether or not their best rirl is tresent and thus set a troubled brain at rest. The plan would undoubtedly be a great convenience for a certain class of young men and would work well in many places.
