of Agriculture recently tendered
Secretary Bates, through Sena
tor Bourne, a series of illustrat
ed lectures and this county has
been favored with one of the
dates, May 23.
This lecture will be given at
the Court House, is free and
every farmer, stockman and
business man is invited to be
present. The illustrated lecture
will be in charge of Maurice 0.
Eldridge, Assistant Chief of
Road management, office of Pub
lic Roads, Washington, D. C.
Mr. Eldridge has a most
pleasing personality and i3 the
equal or any good roads lecturer
in the United States. He has
charge of the exhibit of the of
fice of Public Roads at the Alas
kan - Yukon - Pacific Exposition
where he made many friends
among the good road enthusiasts
of the Pacific Northwest. Mr.
Eldridge will be accompanied by
Hon. Lionel Webster of Port
land, the most prominent good
roads man in Oregon to-day.

Halley's comet is now really
visible to the naked eye accord
ing to several local people who
are capable of telling a comet
from a large star or a streak of
aurora borealis and who have
had the temerity to arise in the
early morning to catch a glimpse
of the famous heavenly visitor.
They all say, however, that
there-, is nothing awe-inspiring
about the astral body and it will
be necessary for it to do some
rapid traveling if it succeeds in
getting close enough to the
earth to make anything like the
big show promised by the scien
tists during the past several
months. At nresent th
itself looks like a large star and
the tail extending southward ap
pears to be about 75 feet in
length. Those who are willing
to arise about 3 o'clock should hp
able to obtain a fairly good view
or ine visitor from out the le
gion of immeasurable space.

the horizon and just a little
