iThe people of Condon were given t doHe of medicine on Fri day niifht at the hands of the city council which will not soon be forgotten. At this time there "Vaa up for ita consideration the appointment of a councilman to fill the unexpired term of Dr. Wood who was elected mayor of the city. Henry Thiesscn, a man who ia absolutely fair and fearless, was recommended for the place by a petition aetting forth that he had received the next highest vote at tha city election held in Condon April 11th, and was signed by a majority of the voters of the City of Condon. At any general election ' the petitionera would have elected him; to those whom it was left to appoint a man who the people desired, it was refer , red; and the citizens who signed that petition, under our theory of government, had the right to ex pect that their will Bhould gov ern, or at least receive such con sideration as would show a re spect for their wishes. When the time came to pass on the ap pointment of a councilman, Councilman Hire nominated Henry Thiensen and this was seconded by Councilman Butler, but when the ballots were count ed the votes showed that two councilmen had voted for Thies sen and three for John Jackson. In doing so they ignored tho will of the people as expressed in the petition and in eiTect said: 'The people be darned, who is running this city?" As an official Mr. Jackson might and undoubtedly will serve the city well, but th's has nothing whatever to do with the question now under discussion, only so far as it shows how far out of the way some of the councilmen went in order to ignore the peti tioners' recommendation. If these things can be done in a country which boasts of free American institutions; where ev ery man's vote counts one, and ia as good ai another; where the will of the people cannot ordinar ily be thwarted and disregarded as has been done here, our city is a joke, its people are regarded as 1 nonentities, and our government turned into a farce. Time was when such things could be done, but they were in countries ruled by kinga and their power was eventually cruhed. They tried it in France and the French Rev olution followed. They tried it in England and the Enjrtish Rev olution followed, and all the hu man life that was sacrificed for the people's will was tremendous. While those days have passed by, and I hope never to return, nev ertheless the American people, 1 hope, cannot be driven regardless of whether or not it be done by a despot or any other power, for it is a well known fact that in other communities the people have turned and created reforms thereafter which were a credit to free government and in accord ance with the principles on which our constitution was made. f The time will come in Condon when the people will demand a government in accordance with their wishes, and when they do the reforms that they will create will be a credit to our city and Eastern Oregon. t A Citizen.
