Miss Sadie Tierney arrived in this city Saturday evening from New York City. She is a sister of D. Tierney and will work in the depot here. Clarence Hazen last week re signed his position as operator at the local depot and has taken a place in Dunn Bros.' store. Mrs. Hansen of The Dalles arrived in this city last Saturday evening to visit with her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Estes. Jay Bowerman returned Sat urday from Portland. Mrs. Sadie Minton returned to this city on Saturday evening of last week. Wm. Lamoreaux, of La Grande was in this city the latter part of last week. He is in the abstract business in that city. Miss Abbie Darling returned last Friday night from Portland. RAISING OF POULTRY Dr. L. L. Taylor will publlah each week a few helpful hints to poultry raisers. Jack Ashenfelter returned to Mikkalo Monday after spending Sunday with his brother here. The A. Walkoff Co. of Port land are taking postcard views of the business houses in this city. Frank White made a trip to LaGrande Monday. Perhaps on business. Gong Lane returned to this city Saturday evening after an absence of two months. Mrs. S. B. Barker came up from Portland last Saturday. F. M. Springston of Lost Val ley was in this city last Saturday. Louie Comini broke the timer on his automobile engine the lat ter part of last week and had to get an expert from The Dalles to fix it. Bill Cooke left on Monday's train for a short visit in Pendleton. The Congregational church services at this place are for all, consequently all are most cordi ally invited to both morning and evening services. Don't forget the voting con test for the armadillo basket at the White Comer Amusement Hall. Ticket with every 10c purchase. The Odd Fellows and Rebekahs of this city will commemorate the 87th anniversary of the founding of Odd Fellowship in this country, by attending church services at the Congregational church April 24th. They expect to attend in a body and be in re galia. Jas. Cooke returned last Sat urday evening from a few weeks visit in Portland. J. S. Burres, was in this city Saturday from Ajax. To clean white silk gloves and hose wash in warm soapsurts, rinse and hang in a dark room. The best time to wash them is at night; they will be dry by mor ning. True with fowls of the sitting breeds, many of the difficulties commonly met with can be avoided. In the first place, it is important to careful ly select the hens. Not all hens even of the breeds supposed to sit are good sitters. The hen should be of a quiet disposition, in fair condition. The body should feel hot underneath, and no hen should be taken that will not allow a person to handle her freely, at least after dark. Sit ting hens should be provided with a room by themselves away from the laying stock to get the best results. The nests should.be of good size and only just high enough in front to re tain the nesting material. There should be kept a dusting box in the room where the hens are sit ting so that they can take plenty of dust baths. If sitting in a room with board floor, use nests with bottoms in them; if on an earthen floor, bottomless nests are better. If a nest with a bot tom is used, it is desirable to place some dirt in the bottom of the nest with a little straw or fine hay on top of the dirt If the nests are covered it is advis able to place dirt'on top of the covering also.' It will be found most convenient to set a number of hens at the same time, and the eggs should be tested after about five days and if many are found infertile, some of the hens may be reset on fresh eggs. (Method of testing eggs to tell whether they are fertile. "Use a box in which a good, clear lamp is placed. Cut a hole in the box as near the size and shape of an egg as possible. In testing, the egg is to be held close to this hole so that all light which finds its way out of the box must pass through the egg. Eggs which are fertile will be found to have a dark spot in them near the end, and if the shell is not thick and if incuba tion is well started, blood vessels radiating from this spot can be distinguished. Eggs which are not fertile will appear perfectly clear and if removed as early as the fifth day can be used for other purposes.) In sitting hens it is better to move them from their accustomed nest to the new one at night and no lantern should be used if possi ble to get along without one. The hen should be kept fastened for a day or two at least, and if many sitters are kept in the same room it is best to keep them closed in the nests all the time except when you feed them which shoulp be done sev eral times a day. They should be fed on whole wheat or corn and given plenty of fresh water and grit. When taken from the nests they should not be allowed to remain off over twenty min utes unless the weather is warm. Chilling the eggs during the sec ond week of incubation is less injurious than any other time during the period of incubation.
