In view of the fact that next
Monday. April 11. is the date for
the election of officers to govern
our city, it might be well to men
tion a few of the candidates
whose names are before the peo
ple. The name of Dr. J.F.Wood
has been brought before the peo
ple by a petition as an independ
ent candidate for mayor. Dr.
Wood has practiced his profes
sion in this city for nine years
and during that time has held
many positions of trust, among
them being a seat on the council,
where, although in the minority,
he has always stood for good
government and all things which
pertained to the betterment of
the city. Condon needs a man
of this kind to fill the position
for which he is a candidate. His
record in all matters speaks for
itself.
:Dr.B.F.Butler. H. A. Thiessen
and J. D. Estes have been nom
inated for councilmen by petition
and as everyone knows are men
of sterling Qualities and :well
fitted for the positions to which
they aspire. The question at is
sue is one of good clean, honest
government and every good
citizen of the city should come to
the polls on Monday with this
point in mind; of electing men
to fill these offices who will give
the taxpayers an administration
that will be a credit to the city.
"There is no doubt but what
some of the big interests in the
United States are contributing,
or have nromised to contribute,
lanre sums of money to break
down the initiative and refer
endum in Oregon. There are
indications pointing that way
that will be exposed in - time
Perhaps too late. There are also
indications pointing to money
being contributed to break up
labor organization, set the
Grangers by the ears and pre
vent the formation of the Far
mers Union. The people of Ore
con are reaching for the seats
of power, and the tax-dodging
public-grafting corporations are
going to try to stamp out the
blaze before it becomes a con
flagration extending over' the
country.
Atopic that is being discussed
daily on the streets of the city is
the deplorable condition of Main
Street at the present time and
the influence this condition might
have upon anyone coming here
with the view of locating and
making Condon theie home. It
is not at all probable that the
view presented would tend to
ward helping their decision to
locate.
It is expected to complete the
jetty at the mouth of the Colum
bia River this season. Work has
already started pn extending it
further and the di edge Chinook
will operate on the bar during
the summer. By the time ' work
stops in November, it is expected
to have a depth of 30 feet on the
bar at low tide.
; The sale of the big land grant
of the Willamette Valley & Cas
cade Mountain Road company

Burlington will become a reality.
It is believed Hill will build west
from Billings, the present termi
nus, to Boise and thence west
ward through Ontario and across
Oregon to Coos Bay. The pur
chase price of this big land grant
will run up into millions. If its
purchase by Hill can be confirm
ed, and this railway built, it will
mean a great development for
Oregon for it will open up the
most isolated sections to settle
ment The bill now in Congress pro
viding for the issue of $30, ("00,000
in certificates to raise money for
completing the projects of the
Reclamation Service which are
now held up for want of money,
is being watched with close at
tention by the people of Oregon,
Washington and Idaho, because
much of the money, if Congress
consents to raise it, will be spent
in these three states. The bill
has already passed the Senate
and is in the hands of the lower
house, which will probably act
upon it within a month.
The announcement of a Boston
dermatologist that motoring
causes baldness will neither dis
courage the motorist nor cheer
the fellow whose locks are thin
ning, although he has walked up
hill and carried burdens all of
his life.
