Sweetin the efficient marshal of Arlington arrived in Condon Monday evening with a prisoner for the county bastile The young fellow, whose name is Arthur A. Reed, worked for Geo. Last week on find ing some returned checks belong ing to Mr. Williams and also some blank checks he forged Mr. Williams name to the extent of $97.50 and on Sunday evening was arrested by Marshal Sweetin in Arlington while at the depot waiting for a train. He was given a preliminary hearing on Monday morning before Justice Collins and was bound over to the Circuit Court under $1500 bond which not being forthcom ing he was lodged in the county jail When arrested he had $71. of the money in his pocket and was wearing a new suit of clothes and had a new suitcase which he had purchased with the remain der. From Arlington j The ferry boat is being given a general overhauling this week. I In the meantime the flat boat j generally operated with sails : during windy weather, has been used, being pulled back and forth across the Columbia by a ! small gasoline launch. t Miss Eva N. Snell who has been visiting Miss Ethel Shurte at St Mary's Academy, The j Dalles, has decided to attend ' school this winter in that city. I J. E. From the Fossil Journal is learned what . happened to the vinuv0 lavs vmuyvu ui W4iuvti last week and who robbed a num ber of people between this city .and Fossil Frank Golden, who was robbed of $6.50 and Wm. Taylor who was also robbed if J10.75, swore out warrants for ihe arrests of the two gipsy wo nen who took their money, and Sheriff Kelsay went to Condon ifter the culprits and brought ;;hem back to Fossil on Friday yherethey pleaded guilty and foe J l t. ice E. Golden and Taylor got heir money back through Justice 'ohnson but a large number of ther victims, who made no of icial complaint, are out from ne to several dollars each. Rob Cash Register. When Wm. Farr opened his market on Monday morning he discovered that someone had en tered his place of business through a back window and had rifled the cash register which at the time contained about $4. Mr. Farr is not certain whether the thief entered the market on Sat urday or Sunday as he was not thereat all on Sunday. The thief left no clue as to his iden tity and departed without doing any other damage. Praise Wheat City. The following is what the Fos sil Journal had to say in its last issue as to Condon's hospitality during the Caledonian festivities: The citizei.s of Condon were splendid in their hospitality, and helped much to make the gather ing what it was in spirit and in truth: a least of reason and a flow of soul for all the Scottish folk. While the town was ' 'dry, ' it was not so arid as to seriously affect the health of the Caledon ians. Mayvllle Notes, Herbert Stephens of Mayville bought Charles Chapman's ranch last week for $7000. The place is situated on upper Butte Creek about three miles from Fossil, contains 760 acres of mixed far ming, grazing and timber land, and is an ideal dairy ranch, there being several large fields of splen did creek bottom land under irri gation. This transaction tends to show the steady increase in the price of land that has been going on in the vicinity of Fossil for some time back, as Mr. Chapman bought the place three years ago from "Chuck" McQuinn for $4000 and now gets $7000 from Mr. Stephens. Mr. Stephens expects to move his family to their home on Butte Creek in a short time. Hogs for Sale I have at my place on Thirty mile, 70 head of 100 lb. Shoats for sale. Call on or address Fred A.
