Christie of Portland, formerly of this city, has been visiting relatives and friends in this city the past week. Clyde Moore arrived in town Tuesday to visit for some time with his brother, Edgar Moore. He has recently finished the study of law in an Illinois law school and will probably travel for some time before starting to practice his profession. Henry Neel shipped a carload of cattle to Portland Wednesday. J. J. Hetzler came in on the local from Clem Tuesday. William Shaw moved this week to his ranch in Kahler's Basin near Spray. Dan and Amos Hawesof Spray were over for a few days this week assisting htm. Miss Louise Morrill is clerking in Dunn Bros'. ' during the ab sence of Miss Mamie Smith. Henry Hartman returned home on Monday from a few days bus iness trip to Portland. The Ladies' Aid Society is pre paring to hold a Bazaar and Fair on November 20th. Mrs. S. B. Barker and little son arrived in Condon Tuesday from Portland for a short visit with relatives. Fred Wilson returned Monday from Boise, Idaho. J. William Burns returned to Condon Monday from the Rose City and other Valley points as a knight of the grip. Will is traveling for a moving picture firm and has been starting per sons in the business. He reports much doing in his line. The great draw bridge across the Willamette River, built joint ly by the Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railways and having the largest draw span of any bridge in the world, is a suc cess. Work trains testing the bridge have passed to and fro for several days. J. E, Hunt spent the first of the week In Portland attending to business matters. He return ed Wednesday and was joined at Arlington by Mrs. Hunt who has been visiting for some time in the East. Mr. and Mrs. William Lang hausen were passengers to Arl ington last Saturday. Miss Bessie McCarty spent Sunday in Arlington. E. R. Korytkowski, the baker at A. A. Townley's bakery, left on Saturday to take a new posi tion. Fred Sauter from Portland takes his place. Clyde Cripe and Jas. Cooke left Monday morning for a few days goose shooting on the Col umbia. Miss Ella Wallace left Satur day morning for a few days visit with relatives and friends at Arlington. A. J. Shelton has opened a real estate office in the building for merly occupied by Wasson's gro cery on the east side of Main street When a splinter has been driv en deep into the hand, it can be extracted without pain by steam. Nearly fill a wide-mouthed bottle with hot water, place the injured part over the mouth of the bottle and press tightly. The suction will draw the flesh down, and in a minute or two the steam will extricate the splinter and the in flammation will disappear. Wo man's Home Companion. Walter C. Winslow, a young Republican attorney in the office of District Attorney John Mc- Nary of Salem, was in Gilliam county this week addressing the voters of the smaller towns on the national issues of the day. Mr. Winslow arrived in Condon Monday and was met at the train by a number of prominent re publicans of this county. Judge D. R. Parker accompanied the Republican speaker to Alville the same evening where a rally was held. Mr. Winslow is a strong logical Bpeaker and en lightened the voters on the pol icies of the Republican party and the issues at stake.
