WHY CONDON PROPERTY IS A GOOD INVESTMENT There are no rival towns near and all the best tillable lands in Gilliam County are in the vicinity of Condon. It is almost an assured fact that WITHIN TWO YEARS we will have a system of elec tric lines from this point to various parts of the country, South and West of here. There is no town in this state that id a county seat and has the prospects of being one of the best school towns, and otner natural advantages. where business and residence property can be purchased at such LOW PRICES as exist ing here. CONDON has never had such prospects of becoming a town of importance as at the present time and lots are sure to DOUBLE IN VALUE with in 12 months. I am back at the old stand, for terms and prices, call and see me. J. E. Lancaster Hugh Johnson came over from Fossil on Wednesday. He is the mayor of the thriving city in the foothills. C D. Charles of Portand, came to Condon Wednesday and con tinued his journey to the camp of the surveying crew at work on the line of the proposed elec tric road. Mr. Charles is one of the active promoters of this enterprise. E. J. Clough of Arlington, manager of the Arlington Lumber- Co., was here for several days this week. He spent the week-end at the May ville fair. Jack Fiske and Goldie Leg horn came up from Arlington Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Carnine who have been visiting in Port land and other western Orpcrnn points for a couple of weeks re turned home Tuesday evening. N. Howland who went to Portland last week to undergo treatment for loco motor axia, is at last reports no better and little hope is enter tained for his recovery much to the regret of his friends. S. P. Shutt, of the Drain Non pareil, who was operated upon for appendicitis at the St Vin cent hospital on September 14, is not recovering as rapidly as expected, other complications having set in. He may be forced to remain in the hospital for some time yet. Tuesday's Oregonian. NURSERYNAN SAYS THAT LOCUSTS CROW BETTER Poplars not Particularly Well Adapted to Soil of this Community. "I am not quite sure that your people do the right thing in plant mg so many poplars as shade trees, m my judgment, the black locust would prove the shade tree best adapted to this soil," thus spoke R. H. Weber, of the Dalles, state commissioner of horti culture for this district to a Globe reporter, when in Condon last week. "I think that in the eagerness to have fine shade trees in a few years, your people are planting trees which are too old. Young trees, say two years old when transplanted, will give far better results. They will WILL TALK GOOD ROADS IN CONDON, OCTOBER 10 Prominent Speakers to Be Present Judge Webster of Portland May Be Here Scott is Coming. John II. Scott of Salem, for merly county judge of Marion county was here this week in the interests of the State Good Roads Association by ahich he has been engaged to conduct a cam paign for better roads through out the state. He has been in several towns and together with others was successful in arous mg considerable interest for better highways in. those locali ties. He held a meeting at the court house Tuesday evening at which it was decided to hold uood Roads Convention in the grow qmcKer ana win be more thrifty. I do not say this as a criticism but rather as a sug gestion," continued the well known nurseryman. Mr. Weber is optimistic regard ing the future of his home city and said that within ten years he expected to see The Dalles the the second city, in size, in the state. "Easterners who have conme to The Dalles recently to investigate fruit conditions, are astonished to find how we grow such fine fruit without irrigation. When they visit our orchards they are all the more astonished, " added the man from the Cherry City. Mr. Weber owns orchard lands at Hood River and in the Mosier valley. The White Sal mon country does not appeal to him as a fruit section because of the expense incident with the clearing of the land, which costs nearly three times as much as in the vicinity of The Dalles, be cause it is a wooded country. Mr. Weber while in the city was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Weigel. He had not been in Condon since the coming of the railroad and naturally saw a diff erent town and was favorably impressed with the Wheat City. court house in this city, October 19th. CONGRESSMAN ELLIS MAKES FINE ADDRESS Congressman Ellis' address in the Court House on Wednesday evening was attended by an ap preciativr audience of both Re publcans and Democrats. He was introduced by M. Fitzmaur ice. His talk was on the politi cal topics of the day and he first took up the revision of the tariff, advising his hearers that inas much as the tariff needs revising, it would be done much sooner under a Republican administrat ion than a Democratic. He com pared the recent so-called panic As a result of a cutting fracas which occurred at the Barn sal oon in the Dalles, last Thursday evening, Joe Shaughnessy of Condon, has been bound over to await the sitting of the grand jury of Wasco county in Novem ber, on a charge of murder in the first degree against Andrew Wilcox. According to the Telegram cor respondent from The Dalles: 'The trouble arose over the possession of a dog belonging to Shaughnessy, who vibited the Barn saloon, where Wilcox was bartender, and when he was ready to leave could not find his dog, and claimed Wilcox stole it He tried to get into the back room where he thougt the dog was, Wilcox pushing him back twice. Shaughnessy says Wilcox was too big a man for him to fight, so the third time he tried to get into the room to get the dog, he took a long knife. The Howard air tight over draft heating stove is a de parture from the ordinary, both in construction and principle, and though new has been on the market long enough to be thor oughly tried, tested and endorsed by thousand of users. They are made in round and oval patterns, and for all kinds of fuel. They are durable in construction, at tractive in appearance and pop ular in price. The material, workmanship and finish is first class throughout. The Howard stove has heavy cast diaphragm check draft, fire pot and grate; is lined above the fire pot with heavy cast lining from fire pot to top. Among the special features of the Howard Stove are the Inver ted conical base, by means of which the heat is radiated direct ly to the floor, warming the floor perfectly. The diaphragm check draft, preventing the waste of heat by escape up the flue, thus utilizing all tha heat produced by the fuel; and the intensely heated overdraft, which sup plies the proper amount of oxygen to produce and maintain a perfect combustion, utilizing as fuel all the gases and combust ible elements of the coal, render ing the stove comparatively smokeless, and explaining why the Howard consumes so much less fuel than other stoves.
