Another town has been en gulfed, not by a volcano but by the march of commer cialism. Jonah-like Bingen has been swallowed up by White Sal mon, both are neighboring towns in Washington, on the new north ' bank railroad and a little above Hood River. But to return to our analogy well, it cannot be carried out much further for the prospects of Bingen to be free again are decidedly meager. To realize that a few crates of straw berries have brought about the blotting away of their home town from the railroad map, is the re gretful reality that the Bingen people are now facing. Bingen has lost its station; worse than that it has lost its own name and henceforth it is to be known as White Salmon. The Enterprise published in the latter town rej oices and says: "At last White Salmon has been placed on the railroad map. On the first of the month, the railroad company changed the name of Bingen sta tion to White Salmon and every body is happy." It was the fame of the White Salmon coun- try as a fruit-producing and ship ping point that influenced the railroad company to make the . change in name. Frank A.
