Perplexing Problem Puzzles City Dads
"Tho water-man will get you,
if you don't watch out! Believe
me kiddo!"
This is the refrain of a ditty
that they're humming down
town, up town, east of town,
went of town, north of town,
south of town and everywere
flso In town. The song may be
set to "canned" music and waft
ed on the evening- breezes by
Hunt's graphophone with our
mutual friend "Homer" manip
ulating the crank. And just
becuuse the City dads made goo
goo eyes? No, but because they
raised tho water rates in an
effort to make the city's water
plant self-maintaining and if pos
sible to show at tho end of the
fiscal year a substantial balance
on the rigt side of the ledger.
And then what? Methinks I see
the denizens of our fair city'rise
up in their pride and in a grand,
reverberating chorus march
up to the city hall singing, "Dies
Bed be our noble Mayor and gra
cious Aldermen."
Hut the city dads have been
getting theirs all the week and
threats of boycotting the mu
nicipal system and drilling wells
have been made. Everybody
who has been watching the city's
affairs knew something had to
"pop"and itdid. Some one asked
tho question at one of the soft
drink dispensaries the other day
"Doesn't the council know that
that they're using more water
than all the allged violators of
the irrigating ordinance - put
together and that because the
water mains are leaking and
leaking badly, too". "You
know it," shouted a by-stander.
The city council is up against
the real thing and up against it
hard. Somebody has been using
water without making adequate
compensation to the town. The
water-users have not correctly
informed tho water collector of
theamountof water consumed.
"Vengeance is ours," cried the
city fathers and in one of tho
busiest sessions our representa
tives ever took part, they
resolved to enforce the new
water rates, rigidly and stren
uously. Investigations and exa
minations and spying excursions
personally conducted by the
marshal are to be made of every
water users' premises for the
avowed purpose of ascertaining
the number of avenues through
which the city's precious water
flows and to be recorded in
a book like that of Angel Gabriel.
The whole session of the coun
cil Monday evening was taken
up with a discussion of the water
proposition and the councilmen
resolved themselves into a com
mittee of investigation. With
pencils in hands and perspiration
trickling down their classic fea
tures, they sat down to the
herculean task. The monthly
receipt books were gone over
and every undercharge and
rebate noted, furthermore the
water collector was instructed
to grant no rebate and to
charge according to the notation
made on the receipt books. This
was a goob job, and brought
in an additional one hundred
simoleons in the treasury.
Mayor Farnsworth wants the
water system to pay for itself
and he is right. He pointed
with pride to the village of Sha
niko where with a population of
about 200 people, the water sys
tem brings in a revenue of $.'JO0
per month and then ridiculed
the idea that Condon with more
than 1,000 inhabitants was
unable to keep up its water sys
tem w a paying basis. At th

Oregon's Delegate Leaves for Cincinnati
In the distinctive honor that
has been conferred on Chas. H.
Williams, of this city, by the
Oregon Retail Jewelers Associ
ation choosing him unanimously
for two successive years as Ore
gon's delegate to the national
convention of the American Na
tional Retail Jewelers' Associa
tion, Condon his home town has
aUo been placed advantageously
before the public eye.
Mr. Williams will leave Mon
day to attend the national
conclave of goldsmiths which
convenes this year at Cincinnati,
August 7 to 11, inclusive.

journey may be to him person
