The public lands committee of the senate reported favorably the bill to enlarge the homestead unit to 320 acres and amending it to make residence on and im provement of land necessary for patent Senator Fulton accepted the bill for Oregon, reserving the right to withdraw later if necea sary. The name of W. B. Potter of Spray is being favorably heard throughout this district as a candidate in the coming election for Representative in the legis lature. 'With such a man as Mr. Potter in the house of represent atives the people of this district would be assured of a strong power representing them, one who would work untiringly for their interests. , Mr. Potter is one of the most prominent . men of Wheeler County, he is one of the largest sheep owners in the country, and he has spent much of his time in the best interest and general welfare of Wheeler county and Eastern Oregon. His latest project, in company with other men of his county, is mak ing possible the irrigation of thousands of acres of land with the waters of the John Day. All of his work has pointed out his sterling worth and force of char acter. The people of this dis trict are in dire need of such a man .to represent them in the legislature. The state grangers have filed arguments against the "free pass" bill and the appropriation of $25,000 for four years for the establishment of armories throughout the state. The grangers assert that the only active service to which the mil itia is ever called is to settle dif ferences between large corpor ations and their employes, and that the former evade in every possible manner the payment of their taxes; that the Pacific Tel ephone company . and powerful interests are trying to overthrow the gross earning tax law passed at the last election; also that ad ditional necessary endless appro priations to install armories over the state would result in grafting.' We are pleased to be able to state that we have been reliably informed that Hon. George B. Boorhill of Sherman county will be a candidate at the coming elec tion for the office, of State Sen ator. -Inasmuch as Gilliam has now held the senatorship for four years and Wheeler for the term previous to this, it is now Sherman's privilege to produce the senator and we are glad to know that they have decided on so able a man. We feel con fident that Mr. Boortiill will be victorious in his race and we wish to assure the people that when he takes his scat in the legislature, this district will be ably represented, not in the in terests of any petty political ring, but in the interests of the people. It also comes to us from the best of authority that W. J. Mariner will make the race for Representative of this district There is probably no man as well known in eastern Oregon as a tealous worker for the inter ests of his county and section of the state as is Mr. Mariner. Washington's Birthday had twice its usual interest and sig nificance in Portland this year on account of this being also the city's first observance of "Rose Planting Day." Archbishop ChrUtie participated in the ex ercises in connection with plant ing the thousands of roses which were borne to the porks by the school children.
