In spite of the reduced cost of transportation in many states, the railroads manage to furnish the same quality of accidents. The Comptroller of the Cur rency says that the wealth of the United States amounts to $1300 per capita. We are not questioning the figures any, but there seems to be some sort of congestion in the circulating de partment Higgledy-piggledy cold storage plant, Turns out eggs when the black hen can't; Sometimes a million, sometimes more, And the quality drops as the prices soar. Organized labor in Tacoma is preparing to wage a great fight against-the incoming of cheap Oriental labor. The Seventh Annual Convention of the State Federation of Labor opens in that city this week and some definite policy or outline of policy will be framed to keep out the Orientals. Congressman W. R. Ellis spent a few days in Pendleton last week, having come from the national capital to register and see that his petition as a candi aate to succeed himseli is prop erly launched. While in Portland the Congressman did not have much to say except that things were humming over in Washing ton. He is still working for the creation of an Eastern Oregon district for the United States court and in. following out his plan has introduced a bill creat ing the district, while, to make double sure Senator Fulton has introduced a similar bill in the senate. This time Ellis is to have formidable opposition for the nomination in the Second Congressional District, for while he has been in Washington dur ing the past few weeks a number of men have declared their de sire for the office. Ellis has been trying to find out just how many of these people mentioned are seriously figuring on coming out for the nomination and which have strength and what kind of strength. The strongest of these is no doubt Geer, although as yet Geer has not committed him self on the subject Geer is wait ing to see if the office is hunting him, while Eastern Oregon's grand old man" is not taking any chances of that sort and is out hunting for the office. Lost An army belt pin. Has the insignia of the U. S. Army on it, spread eagle etc. Finder please return to this office. CHOICE . Archaeologists have been delving for many years In the sands of Egypt, and their labors have unearthed, many strange flnds. But It remained for excavators within the last year to dis cover something which has hitherto not been met with in these subter ranean explorations. These singular linda were made last seasou at Abydos, Iu upper Egypt, by tbe Institution of British Archaeology, represented by iYofeesor Uarstang and his colleagues. Inside huge jars of earthenware were found the bodies of hawks which bad been preserved from Ptolemaic times by being mummified much In the sam manner as the human bodies recovered from the tombs of the lands of the pharaohs. These little hawks are said to present a very strange appearance, with their beaks peeking out from the cross strappings which envelop them. Another find was tbe cemetery of the times of the Ptolemies' rule In Egypt (323 a C, to the death of Cleopatra, 30 B. C.l. In which the muinmiaed birds were discovered. , The Weighing Fad. Two men entered a Broadway tM. taurant and after putting a question to the bead waiter went out again. "What did they wantr asked a cus tomer. They wanted to know If we hen scales here so they could weigh them selves before beginning to eat That seems to be a fad nowadava with rila. tartans who are concerned as much with the Quantity as well aa tha nnsl. Ity of tbe food they eat. They allow themselves a certain number of each meal. Tbey are not content with weigmng the rood, but Jump on to tbe scales themselves before and afror estlng to make sure that they neither overoo nor underdo tbe process of .eedlng. Unfortunately we are not nra. pared to so exactly gauge the Indul gence of a man's appetite. They assured ine mat several other restaurants are o equipped, so thev went on tn lnk for one." New York Sun. The Man of Nature. "Meva. the man of nature" wtm u sn ardeut apostl of the "simple life," was fined recently In Paris for aelitnir picture post cards in the streets witn- tui s license, uwlng to tbe singular i;arb be wears he was taken before the court on a second charge of mas lueradlng. Is ilea back with a bit of ribbon. His beard Bows halfway fin trn in hia waist and be carries a long staff. Ho lives on nuts, fruits and raw vegeta-bles. Dangerous Wrapping Papar. In an article by Dr. cVBiiitinW. published Id tbe Munich Medlcinlscbe Wochenscbrlft tbe sttentlon of the nnh. lie Is directed to the fact that wrap ping paper is a fruitful vehicle for germ diseases.
