Edward Warficld, a younjy man of lone, was found dead about three miles below that town on October 23 about 11 o'clock a, m. It was first thought that he had bison murdered, and Sheriff Shutl and the coroner were notified al Heppner, and in company with Dr. Kitsncr immediately left foi the scene. A coroner's jury was immediately impaneled, but tes timony and conditions soon proved that it was a case of sui cide. Young Warfleld had been keep ing company with Grace .Watten burger, a farmer's daughter living about six miles below lone, and it seems they had trouble. lie wrote the girl a letter, .which she refused to read, and tore up before him. Brood ing over this trouble, he went tc the drug store Monday morning, purchased a vial of carbolic acid, then purchased a revolver. The last seen of him he was going down the railroad track. These facts coming out, and Warfleld failing to put in an ap pearance, a search party was or ganized and he was found in canyon about three miles below lone, lying face- downward, with the vial of carbolic acid in hit hand and the revolver several feet distant He did his job well, taking a dose of the poison and then shooting himself. Young Warfield comes fronr. one of the pioneer families ol Morrow county and has several brothers and sisters living there. Miss Wattenburger is the daugh ter of Wiley Wattenburger, foi many years a prominent rancher of Turtle Creek, who recentlj moved onto Willow Creek below lone, where he' has large hold ings. Warficld was a man of strong physique and posed for a time as an amateur boxer in Morrow county, having given one or twe exhibitions at lone and other places. His one-time sweetheart, Miss Wattenburger is belle ol the neighborhood and was chos en goddess of liberty for the Fourth of July celebration in lone this year. Warfield was taciturn and of a moody temper- ment . ' Ed Stackhouse, Jr., went tc Portland Saturday for a few days' recreation. Dr. and Mrs. Walter Gavey and little son left Saturday mom ing for a visit of several days with friends in Spokane and Col fax. ' ... The Master of the Oregon State Grange and Mrs. A. T. Buxton leave Forest Grove this week for Hartford, Connecticut, where they go to attend the Na tional Grange. Mr. Buxton at tended the Mayville Fair last month and as may be seen is putting forth all efforts for the Oregon Granges. Mr. and Mrs. Courtney Carson Cooke were given a royal sendoff on their honeymoon last Satur- day by a host of friends. Rice and old shoes were in great dis play, while the trunks, with their advertising, as an advance guard warned the people ahead that someone had been united for life. A suggestion has been mad to th commissioners to chang th nam of Sixteenth atreet northwest For sev eral years paat various kinds of names have been suggested for this famous thoroughfare, many of tha writers contending that its present numerical designation is too commonplace for such an Important and beautiful high way. Tbe latest name suggested la Fed eral drive. , Notwithstanding all these uggeationa and the introduction of everal bills In congress calling for a chang in the name, the old numeral holda on. Some of the naoiea auggest ed are: Executive avenue, Presidents' boulevard,' Presidents' avenue, Waah lngton avenue, Avenue of Our Presi dents, Union driveway, Macfarland avenue, Jefferson avenue, Roosevelt tvenue, Lincoln avenue, L'Enfant bou levard and Shepherd avenue.
