( voLb xvi r. OONDON. OREGON. FRIDAY. OCTOIJKR 11. 1007. NO. 30. . a BARN IS. DESTROYED BY FIRE Condon Wakened by Crack ling of Fierce Flame at Three A. M.Saturday. NR& Of INCENDIARY ORIOIN Use of Fine Stream of Water Save Other Buildings Los I Not Large. A large blaze resulting in the burning down of the Frank Kargl barn on lower Main street was the cause of the clanging of fire bells and the rush of the half awakened people through the streets at the early hour of three on the morning of Saturday. The fire was not discovered un til it had made much headway and by the time a number of peo ple and the volunteer fire depart ment arrived on the scene of the conflagration the building was entirely enveloped in a mass of flames. The fire boys at once had a fine stream of water playing on the angry flames and in a few minutes they were in control of the situation. The timely arrival of the fire company was all that saved the barn or shed, standing 30 feet away, and which stood between the mass of flames and the Model rooming house. 1 The large building was envelop ed in a sheet of flames, and not a zephyr fanned the fire. Had the night been a windy instead of a quiet one, it is doubt ful whether the flames could have been checked and the busi ness district would have been in great danger. As it was the flames shot straight in the air for hundreds of feet and the burn- ning particles of wood were ex tinguished before reaching the ground. A few loads of hay and a little feed was all that was stored in the barn at the time and the loss was not large. The stock was loose in - the barn yard and was turned out into the street It is the opinion that someone under the influence of liquor went into the barn for a nap and be fore taking such must have lighted a match preparatory to taking a smoke, yet no trace of any such person was found. Rlggs-Bracken Mrs. Minda Bracken was mar ried to Wesley A. Riggs at the Hotel Oregon in this city at 10 o'clock Thursday morning by Rev. G. W. Riggs. Central Point Herald. : ' MAYVILLE FAIR READY Tuesday I Opening Day Two Day of Excellent Program. Entries Received. ,- The Mayville Grange with a number of grangers from both Igo and Butte Creek Granges met in joint session to make final arrangements relative to the Fair. On account of the un avoidable absense of the Master, E. Morgan, of Mayville Grange, it became necessary to select one to take his place; W. J. Edwards will fill it during his absence. On motion the Fair was made free to all, no entrance fee will be charged. The formal opening will take place on Tuesday morn ing at 10 o'clock' with music by the band and short talks followed by an address by R. R. Butler of Condon. There will be other exercises during the Fair, not ably the mounted drill, etc. We would call the attention of the producers of Gilliam and Wheeler counties to the fact that in accordance with the in terest taken in and the help giv en to this fair will be the success or failure of this first attempt to show our fellow citizens what these two counties are capable of producing. There has been nearly $000 subscribed in Gilliam county towards defraying pre miums and other expenses. The secretary has already a number of entries of horses and cattle as well as farm produce and ladies WOrk. ; f ; , CONDON FLYER WRECKED Wheat Car Rides the Ties -Trucks Jump Track Mucn Delay. The Arlington-Condon Over land had troubles of its own Wednesday morning when on its way to Arlington one of the trucks under a box car loaded with wheat, refused to continue in the "straight and narrow path" and left the track. The car .bucked and jumped along over the ties for about a quarter of a mile before the train was brought to a standstill. Upon examination it was found that the track was torn up in such a shape as to make it absolutely im passable and as the crew could not get the truant wheels on the track the passengers and bag gage were loaded into a box car and taken into Arlington. The wrecking crew at The Dalles was sent for and arrived at the scene about four o'clock in the after noon. The wrecked car was straightened up and the track repaired in about four hours. The , car and the passenger coaches were then taken into Arlington. The train left for Condon about 11 o'clock and ar rived here between 2 and 3 in the morning. According to all reports the people at Arlington have gone into the cold storage business for the passengers had to sit in the depot there until 11 o'clock at night without so much as a shovelful of coal for a fire although the night was very chilly.
