' Conanl Commander It would be rather a difficult tak to find twelve men in Condon who would coifict a man of stealing coal when the thermometer regit ten 18 degree below sero. It wan re port il in the last issue of the Time that Senator Bower wan will introduce a "Pure Food Bill' at the present session of the State Legislature. The Times man ha evidently made a grave error for if Senator Boweruian is actual ly the author, it should more prop erly be called a "poor food bill." There will douhtle be a bitter fight on the proponed new appor. tiomnent of iegia lalive districts at the present session of the Legiula ture. The people of the interior counties are generally opposed to the new apivortionment scheme as it would materially reduce their representation and increase the al readv large representation of Mult homah county in both houses of the Legislature. We have often wondered just what there is about holding some dinky-dink political office that is often the means of making a man swell up like a poisoned pup. The smaller the office the greater the expansion and the fellow invaria bly keeps on bubbling up with im portanoe until he is forcibly wean ed from the publio tit and made to rustle an honest living in the same manner as the friends who secured his election. In looking over the field of presi dential possibilities there is perhaps do active or receptive candidate for that high offioe who oomes nearer representing the progressive ele ment of the republican party than Secretary Taft. While believing in the sound principle of protection he is unquestionably of the opinion that there should be a change i the present tariff sohedule. H is also generally understood that he is in full acoord and sympathy with the President on every othe Important question of publio inter est. His publio and private record is beyond reproach and his undoubt ed popularity makes him an ideal CHURCH SERVICES ,11:00 a. m. 10:00 a. in.
