Prael, president of the Multnomah Amatuer Athletic Clubv which or ganization is promoting the Carni val as a money making propos i- ti nfjrthsclub. Accompanying the dead head "copy" is & season ticket to the Carnival. This ticket does not even state that it will be hon orcd as good for' the admission of the editor's wife 'should she chance to accompany- her spouse to the show and the presumption is that the editor will either have to leave his wife at home or dig up 10 cents each time she enters the Carnival grounds. At the bottom of the ticket, in red ink, appear the words 'Not Transferable." This would indicate that Mr. Prael is of the opinion that country publishers have become so impoverished by filling up their columns with the class of dead head' matter that he sends out that there is danger of them selling a ten cent complimen tary ticket to the highest bidder It must be remembered that these tickets are only good for ad mission to the Carnival grounds. Ouce within it costs the unwary country editor from 10 to 25 cents to see each separate attraction and these several amounts must be sup plied from funds received from an entirly different class of advertisers than that to which most Carnival managers belong. The matter Bent us; if published, would amount to $9.90 and just why we should do nate that amount to any Carnival concern in exchange for a ten cent ticket which would cost us much good money and valuable time to use, is not quite clear to us. This particular concern is point ed out in this article only as a fair representative cf a class of adver - tisers who are always trying to get something for nothing from the country publisher and, more's the pity, too often succeeding. The publisher who allows himself to be flituti-ttumed out of his advertising space, which represents a certain amount of money to him the same - as goods on the shelf represents money to the merchant, has him self to blame. If he continues to give it away the public will contin ue to expect it for nothing and will value it at about the same rate as the publisher bnieclf ap parently does Ou the other hand, if the publishers would unite and to a man cut out all dead bead work they would at once elevate . the standing of their papers, en hance their self respect and might ily augment the esteem in which they are now held by the men who systematically flimflam them. If such, a course were adopted it would be but a little while until deadhead "copy" ceased to clog the ' publisher's mail and World's Fairs, State Fairs, Carnivals and all such concerns, would begin making ap propriations for newspaper adver . Using the same as they now do for buildings, grounds, printing, labor and many other things. The Globe has cut out all of this class of dead. head work but it has ; mauy ' contemporaries who have uot done so. .. Since the above was put in type the Mytle Point Enterprise comes . to hand with the following decla ration of intention; "So far as the Enterprise is con cerned we are. through with this free advertising for any concern in ' the country. Every mail brings to our office some circular of -some kind from some public institution, or soma public enterprise which we are asked to publish free " for the benefit of our readers." Recently we have made a rule to throw them into the waste basket as fast as we can tear them open A newspaper man's space is his capital his liv ingand the St. Louis Fair, the Portland Exposition, the Chautau qiias, our own State Fair and other enterprises are as able to pay for advertising as we are to do it for nothing. Every self respecting publisher should shut down on this imposition at once and forever." If every country publisher in Oregon would act on .this sugges tion it would be but a short time uytil we" could all notice a marked increase In our advertising rectipts. Theee projects all depend on news paper advertising for ft large meas ure of their success and if the pub lishers would only anile in cutting out all dead head grafts thew con cerns would willingly come to the center and pay for their work the same as our home advertisers do.
