In an altercation which ooenrred yes terday afternoon at the So mm It saloon between Frank Palmer and City Mar shal Armstrong the latter received fin shot wound in the left kaee which may leave him a cripple for lift. Aa near aa can be ascertained at thia writing, the trouble started on In pre vious day when the marshal had some words with Mr. Palmer' wlfeabont the te of oily water. At the time of the trouble Palmer called Armstrong to one aide, Iwtwen the ealoon building and Barker's new building to rail him to ac count for the occurrence of the day be fore. The men had some word when Palmer fired a shot and started to back off toward the saloon door, Armstrong followed hi hi and Palmer fired three more shot the last one- WklngeflWl in Armstrong's left knee. The Injured man was taken to Dr. Wood's office where hie wound was dressed and ha wa later ta ken home. The bullet le I in bed ed in the head of the bone below the knee Joint and was not recovered. Palme' went to the sheriff's office) and gave hlmaeif op. He waa placed under $2000 bond for his appearance, for hear log this afternoon. A Farmer's Pool. Four years ago tn a certain district In si art' n county toe farmer met one evening In their local school boose and formed a pool vt their wheat crop. The scheme was an, eiperloient pore and simple and even the tanners themselves did not know, at that time, whether or not It was practicable but they argued that If pooling Issues was a good thing for railroad companies aud grain buyers it should not be a verv bad thing for the farmers. Of course the newspaper, business men, and other smart people, ridiculed the project - plenty. They called it a "farmer's trust" and snicker ed alyly in their sleeves at the ridicu lousness of a lot of fool farmers thinking that a granger had eenae enough to ee- eure, through organisation aud a little scheming, a better price for his produce than that which the buyers had, In the past, been pleased to give him. The farmers said nothing, however, and saw ed wood. Whwn the time tor marketing their wheat crop came around, Instead ol having a great number of small Indi vidual holding of only a few hundred bushels each, they had one big lot of wheat aggregating thoosatirds ofswcws- a job lot, it you pjease, which wae of so much Importance to the buyers and exporters that they were hungry to buy it aud willingly paid au advanced price. The result was that the farmer who were In the pool realised a better price for their wheat thandid those who were onUide of it and who sold their smalt crops la the old fashioned, individual way. Since that time the "pooling move' luent baa grown In Marion county until not only wheat brrt bops, wool mohair in fact almost every important product of the county, a thoa pooled aud sold in big lota and at much better price than were obtainable under the old avstetn. The application of at) this to the far mers of Gilliam county may f found in lhequry; If pooling crw for market pay in Marion comity why will It not pvr In Uilliaoi? If buynr wiM piy a hlithor price per imihel for a lot of a quarter or half a million bohel than thy will for a wagon load or a smell rop why would it not pay .the farmers here to form a pool? Such a proposition Is at least worth InvcKtigaiing. Tlivte ia no danger of the farmer getting more than his pro duce Is worth under any conditions. Suicide Prevented. The startling announcement tiiat a preventive of eulc'.de had been discover ed will Interest many. A 'run down ays- ter or despondency invariably precede anicide and something has been fouud that will prevent that condition which makes suicide likely .At the first thought ot self destruction take Electric Bitters. Gen. Miles on War. General NeUon Miles, until recently commander-in-chief of the United States Army, has since his retirement given expression to his views on waraafol Iowa: "Standing armies are a menace to re publicanism and the peace ot the world. "The aristocracy desires an army but the burden of its support falls ou the people. Itconldbe eliminated to the well being of all democratic forms of government. "War is abhorrent and human lutein genes denounce it. "I advocate a congress of powers and the adoption of a rule of one soldier for each 1000 Inhabitants. HL"t soldiers become artisans and far mers and thus relievo the world of one million paratrites whose sole business is useless war.rr Ed Black boose and family will go to the timber (or a tew day' outing and will improve the time hi looking for some desirable timber land locations. Should they find a location to their lik hig they may locate up there and engage in the stock and dairy business. Some reports of sheep shooting' come In from the mountains from time to time and men familiar with the cummer range country predict that as the season advances and the grass becomes ahort I tere will be more serious trouble than In any previous year.
