Remember the new date. Moulding was commenced at Arm strong's brick yard Monday morning. The plant baa been very much improv ed thla season and a first-class quality of brick will be turned out. The out put will be 8000 a day for the season. Dr. Wood made a trip across to Eight mile Saturday and took the editor of this high toned family journal along to open gates and do the fishing. Our space is much to limited to tell of the fish we didn't catch and onr troth and veracity too overwhelming to tell of the others. ' No bids were submitted for building the new school house and the school board has decided to have the building put up by day work. 8. 8. G rider baa been employed to superintend the work of construction. Alburn Moore started eicavating for the foundation Monday morning. Mrs. E. L. Taylor has sold her ranch adj lining the townoite to W. Lord, F.T. Hnrlburt and J. E. Lancaster at 127.50 per acre. This deal ia very good evi dence that the purchasers hove unbound ed faith In tbe future of Condon. The land was purchased for townsite purpos es ami we understand ' that a 40 acre tract is likely to be platted at an early date. The report Is too lengthy too be pub lished In full but below we give the open ing statement together with the sum ma ry, which gives all that is of Interest tha rest being merely detailed statements showing the work of the various officers In the different years and the esact time etc. In which the descrepencles occur. Following Is the opening statement: lion. Edward Dunn, County Judge, Dear Blrr I have to report that the work of checking up the books of the County Officials of Gilliam County has been completed and annual reports of such Investigation have been rendered to you from the year 1885 to July 7, 1902. The exceptions noted on the annual reports are clerical error and do not really affect the. finances of Gilliam County except as noted herein : The shortage due from the bondsmen of A. Oilman, assessor In 1802, has not yet been fully paid. There Is atill due 32.S5. In 1894 tbe following items of Interest appear to have been erroneously paid tothePauly Jail Building and Manu facturing Co., of St. Louis ; said to be ac crued on warrants after date of call for payment. li. llalatead, Co. treasurer, paid $130.28 8. B. Barker, " 121 30 Total 1251.07 From 1885 to 1902 W. L. Wilcox was July elected sheriff and as such sheriff was the tax collector of the County. The books show tax collections and remittances to the connt? treasurer by Mr, Wilcox which shows that there is due to the Connty : From Tax Collections Error in Tax Roll 1892 Tout Mr Wilcox claims there I 1203.21 42.44 (250.66 dne him from School District No. 6 $132.82, but I can find no evidence of this claim. J. P. Lncas, ex-County Clerk, Is in debt to the County $10 03. From the records in the School Super intendent's office it appeare that there Is doe to Gilliam County from Wheeler County, the sum of $437.93 (or errors in apportioning school funds by E. W. Daggett, ex-School Superintendent. School warrant No. 3, May, 1807, Issu ed for $55.23 shows in Register Page 84 $45.25 error of $10 against E.W.Daggett. The following suggestions are respect fully recommended : 1 All notices for calling in Warrants should lie entered in CotumlsHioner's Journal and copy of notice pasted there in. 2 Treasurer's Books are now kept In store of P. 11. Stephenson. They should be kept In vault at court house. 3 All claims authorised by Connty Court should be entered in Commission er's Journal and Docket whether acted upon during regular term of Court or during vacation. 4 School Superintendent's Books should be kept at the court house In stead of at his home. I have attached hereto tbe following statements: 1 The tax collections and remittances to the Connty Treasurer by W. L. Wil cox, sheriff; showing the amounts due the Connty by years and also' the large over payment in 1902 when he was leav ing the office. 2 The list of errors In lax roll of 1892. 3 The list of errors in warrants drawn by J. Van Vector, the well known at torney, has disposed of hi law practice here to John Snover, of Uoldendale Washington, and will in a abort time move to Heppner where be will engage in the practice of hi profusion a partner of J. W. Redfleld. Mr. RedfJeld I recognised as tha leading attorney of that citv and with the addition of Mr. Van Vector the firm will be one of the strongest in Eastern Oregon. Van's many friends here will regret to lose himself and his estimable family from tbe town and their best wishes for bis continued success In his new field will go with him. Mr. Snover who takes bis place bert cornea highly recommended ai a splendid gentleman and aa able lawyer and we bespeak for him a sue ceesful buslneee from the first. Mr. Snover was here for a few daya during the week and made an excellent iiupres- ti'gon all who met film. He left for Goldeodale yesterday expecting to re turn with his family in about two weeks. Mrs. A. D. Hardie, of Trail Fork, vis ited friends in town during the week. Ed Portwood and one of bis children, of Eightmile, are suffering from aa at tack of measles. Jayne Bros, will take their sheep to Malheur county this Bummer. - It ie not probable they will return to Gilliam. Joe Fair is In town thla week under the care of bis physician aofferiog frem a badly Injured eye. He was working at Brown Bros, shearing pena when a stick, which he was using to drive sheep with, broke the end atriking him in tbe eye. He will be laid up (or aeveral day. Brown Bros, have . about finished shearing their band of 0000 sbeep at their borne ranch on Rock creek. They will have about 250 sacks of wool. Meters Brown are among the most extensive iheapmen-ln this county. Winnie Keisur's crew did their shearing. Olex. School commenced Monday with Mies Scoggins, of Condon, as teacher. Messrs Burns and Star, of Arlington visited friends in Olex Monday. Dr. C. E, Kennedy, formerly of Olex, now of Arlington, la HI with small-pox. His many (riends hope (or bis speedy recovery. Messrs Miller and Leghorn, of Arling ton, were doing business in town during the week. L. 0. Ralston, of Portland, was seen on our streets Saturday. Ferry Canyon School Notes. (MABEL RICHMOND, Editob.) Tena McDongall visited our school twice last week. The (ore part of tbe week waa bright and sunny but Wednesday and Thursday were windy and disagreeable. Another picture waa added to our wall decorations Wednesday. We have singing every morning now instead of recitations as we bad tbe first terra. . , '.,: f ........... .., , The 4th grade ia making good progress in Arithmetic. The 7th grade has finished Roofing and Flooring and began with the subject of Rectangular Solids Friday. Tbe 9th grade is working in Equations. Last Friday evening the pupils above the 4th grade read papers on the subject "What can pupils do to make school more pleasant" which they bad prepared during the week. A Sure Thing.
