The announcement made last week that Mia llershner had been em ployed to tench the primary department In the Condon school seems to have been premature at the statement hat elnce been made that the contract with her has not yet been closed. . The Arlington Lumber Co. was fortu nate In securing two car loads of Beet Cedar Shingles during the late strike In Portland, owing to the (nut that building was slopped for want of lumber, but the shingle mills kepCon getting out shingles thereby overstocking the Portland mar ket for a few days. It's all off now and shingles have advanced in Portland but we are making our friends, the (3.45 price while the two cars last. Ron I in your order. Governor (Jeer has pardoned Frank S. Ingram, the life term prisoner who lost a leg In the recent outbreak at the peni tentiary in his attempt to save the life of one of the unarmed guards. Liberty will not be much of a boon to him In his crippled condition nnleaa some pro vinion is made for him to earn an honest living for himself and it would seem to lie nnlv riirlit for some assistance to be given him in a new start in life. Cor dilution Pcutponotl, Him coronation i,f King IvUiinl th VII which was lo have Ukru place today bat been indefinitely postponed. Thv King underwent an operation for appen dicltlt on Tuesilay and, while the oper atlon wa successful, the gravest fears are entertained for th outcome within th nest 48 hours. Th King htt been ailing for tome time but It was only Monday night that an operation was d cided upon. Many of the foreign repre sentatives who were In London to attend th coronation have returned home aud th general opinion Is that the ceremony will never lake place. The Portage Road. Paul F. Mohr hat been In Spokane for ,1 . . . . . t . mm in greater part oi in ween, li was interviewed by the Chronicle there rela live to hit long-delayed portage road, and is thus quoted by that paper: "W are not yet In fandt but w hop to be." Continuing Mr. Mohr said t The report that we had already pur chaited the rails on the right of way is not correct. The" bav been bought in by Ilodos A Co. of Seattle, who are hold Ing them till we have an opportunity to turn arouud. , "Th Columbia River Comp any It bit ing organised to take over th atnett and complete the work. The opposition of powerful railway Interest makes It lio- possible for us to secure th funds from Urge money center. The money must be snbtcrlbed by the men who are to be benefited by the road. It I too late now to complete th road thla year, but later w hope to show result." Mr. Mohr'tialtu In tb ultimate suo- cessof his plan is of that never-dying and persistent quality that augurs well for eventual success. There Is no ques tion whatever but that one th portage road gets Into operation, It will open up a territory th traffic from which will reach enormous proportion. At press nt this cannot be touched, for lack of facili ties for transportation. Might Have Been Serious. What might have beeu a serious acci dent occurred on the Matney Flat road one day last week when John Knos was on hit way to th timber with hit freight wagont. Mr, Knos had just met and pasted R. Do Neui's team when from some onknown cause hi horses became frightened and turned around In the road apsetting the lead wagon. Just as the wagon turned over Mr. De Neol stopped hit team and Mr. Knos't leaden ran In to lb rear of hit wagont which stopped them. Mrs. E. K. Fair, of Lost Valley, was in the wagon with Mr. Knox and when the wagon turned turned over her foot caught in the teat spring holding her fast. Had the team met with no ob stacle It is likely that they would have ran and perhaps dragged th lady to death. A It was she was speedily re leased from ber perilous position aud fortunately escaped without so much as a scratch. All the damage that wat done wat a broken wagon tongue fur Mr. Knox. Wanted-A Wife. Oeorge Martin haa bought the W. L. Wilcoi residence property, on Church street, the consideration being $1,300. Like many other people the tnoreUeorge has the more he wants and now that he has ft house he wants ft housekeeper and be want her bad, lie has authorised the Globe to advertise for one and sayt that any old (or young) thing, maid or widow, from 15 to 60, will fill the bill. No objectiont will be made to any lady who is worth $50,000 or $100,000 in ber own right but at George it not merce nary he hopes her fortune will not ex ceed tbe latter figure. He promises to he a most Indulgent husband and, to prove it, agrees to let her split all the indling and build the fires it she wants to, This is the chance of a life time la dies. Dou't miss it. More Sheep Shooting. The strained situation with regard to summering sheep In the mountains growt more and more intense. While the theep men this tide the mountains are "resoluting" the eettlera on th other side are shooting theep on govern ment land within tbe dead line they arrogantly established in the Camp Watson mountains. The latest sheep man to suffer it Wm. Maacall, of Grant county, whose range is just beyond the Wheeler county line. Maecall't theep were driven into the Black canyon dis trict for summer range, and thereabout ten days ago 153 head were killed by 12 masked men, who also burned tbe cam p. Later a large quantity of stock salt mixed with stryehnine was found on Keeton creek where sheep are accus tomed to pass enroute to the moun tains. The Woolgrowers' Association of Wheeler county held ft secret meeting at Mitchell tbe other' day, to devise meant to protect their rights. Many herders are quitting, aa they do not like to pose as targets for the guns of infur- riated ranchers. Fossil Journal.
