A reliable gentleman of Rook ' ereek precinct informed the Gi.obk a few days ago that in his precinct the belief is common among the voters . that the, registration law compels all voters to appear in per son at tbeoSice of the county clerk lor the purpose of being registered and that many of the voters have declared that they will not make a special trip to Condon for that par pose. He aim staled that the same understanding of the law is common in Blalock, and Arlington precincts. Section 9 of the Registration laj provides that if it is not convenient for any voter to register before the county clerk that he may register without cost to himself before any justice of the peace or notary public in tbe county. It further provides that the county clerk shall supply all justices of the peace and notaries public who request thetu with nec essary blanks for the purpose of taking registrations, free of charge and that the courtly shall pay such officers at tbe rate of 10 cents for each voter registered who votes. All voters should make a note of Kit nPAmeiAn ftmnirA liotrA aula ar.wtD.v... v..tiiv ww some officer in their own precinct secure blanks so all voters may be registered for the coming election. All voters who are in the county seat, before 5 o'clock p. m. on the 15th day of May should go before the county clerk and register as it is more convenient to do so than to register before a notary public and it also eaves tbe county any expense. But some notary or justice in each precinct should secure proper blanks for registering all voters who find it impracticable to go to the county seal. x tie uruviurs iuit iuu registration books shall close at 5 o'clock p. m. on the 15th of May and every voter should attend to this important duty before that date. - T No registration is necessary to entitle a voter to take pari in the primaries, except in Multnomah county, but all who fail to register as required by law will be obliged to swear their votes in at the June election. PROGRESSIVE POLITICS., Under the above caption tbe Portland Telegram prints a thought ful; editorial in a recent issue in which it points out that the pres ent trend of politics is for the bet- x T . . i t ver. i. cays in pari; i e, eiowiy gradually, but surely, we will ele vate men to high positions better fit 'to make a state'; men who would unrn tn nrnfir a rlollar'j worth out of their office beyond their legal salaries; men who dare say yes and no and look God and all men in the face; men who do not have toconnubiate and play snide tricks and slip around shady corners and through dark alleyways actually or metaphorically eith er to "get a nomination" or to "get elected." The people are going to weed out these little greedy vampir ish fellows, and put Men in their places men who will serve the country,' the Nation, the state, the county, the city, the school district as judiciously, as honestly,, as faithfully, as surely and earnestly, as they would serve their old father i i,. ,.. i,: j if. Not that there are not 'good men," who do their duty fair ly well in local public service, but the animating thought running all through, is wrong, injurious vicious dangerous. It is: Get as much out of the public as possible, and do as little as possible for the public. ThaJ, is the. basic principle of offici aldom with . some exceptions, of course everywhere. Now that is going to be changed. '. The public j is going to pay a man a fair nalttry for his services, and demand a fair, square day's work, every necessary working day in the year; and if he wants a re-election he will get it on his record, on his merit, not by neglecting his ditties to run down to the "Nirth End" or out to this or tha.t ohib, to tell the voters how, the country must be snved.
