Suppose the case in point to be a school district in a new and grow ing community. A few years ago the district contained 60 or TO pu pils. A two room school house and two teachers were then sufficient But the country grows; new settlers come in and with them many new children of school age; the two rooms are filled, then they are crowded a little later they are pack ed and finally they overflow and the teachers in sheer desperation are compelled to appeal for help and for more room in which to at tend to the intellectual wants of this small army of bright eyed young Americans all clamoring for . some kind of school privileges. The school officers do the best they can under the circumstances and secure a room in some vacan remote perhaps from be school house and another teacher is provi ded. .This change may be made in the middle of a term in which case the school is, for a while "all torn up" and the work seriously in terfered with, . Such a condition would not exist in a district whose citizens possess ed even a small . amount of civic pride. Even the pride in appearan ces in the eyes of neighboring local ities and of strangers who come among them to seek homes should prompt them to watch the chang ing conditions of their district and Bay, "This school house is too small; we must have a larger and better one and we must employ more teachers. Our children are the peers of any children on earth' and must have the very best education al advantages. Our children must have these things and we must provide them and we are willing to pay for them." This is the way people who possess a proper degree of civic pride cr even of parental pride talk and act. Or suppose the case to be that of an incorporated city, tow nor village. If the citizens of that town desire it to be a good town, a prosperous town, a progressive town, a desir able town in which to live and transact business and rear their families and to develop the best, rather than the worst traits of them selves and their children they must make it a town of which they need never be ashamed; they must have civic pride. 1 Every citizen who has ' that commendable pride will take a per- ' sonal interest in the welfare of his town. . He will watch the condi tion of the Btreets, the sidewalks . and other public places. He will be interested in the purity of the water supply, the sanitary condi tions, the fire appataus and public order. He will positively refuse to dump his garbage on vacant lots within the city limits, imperiling the health and comfort of every res ident and creating an eyesore at which the finger of scorn may well be pointed by every visitor who happens that way, even if permitted Something That Will Do You Good. S. senator in this state but now, believing that a crisis has arisen and the fame of the state is in danger it will urge the election of a man who can and will uphold the honor of Oregon with both voice and fist. Pullman Ordinary Sleepers The tourist travel between the East and the Pacific Coast has reached enor mous proportions In the last few years, and calls for a special class of equipment. To meet this demand the Pullman Co. has issued from its shops what it tech nically calls the "Pullman Ordinary Sleeper." These cars appear similar to the regular sleepers being bnilt on the same plan, but not furnished with the same elegance. They are equipped with mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows, pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes, ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to be furnished by the passenger. Each car has a stove for making tea and coffee and doing "light housekeeping", and each section can befitted with an adjust able table. A uniformed porter accom panies each car, his business being to make up berths; keep the car clean, and look after the wants and comforts of the passengers.
