Strange statement, that, to be made of a town which has always bnaated, and with good reason, of the absolute purity of her municipal water supply. But It'a true. Since the recent thaw began the water from the city mains has taken on a red dish yellow tinge and a flavor like unto the drainage from a barn yard. When boiled it emit an odor not pleasing to the nostrila. And the cause is not far to seek. A casual inspection of the city wells, specially the one nearest the tank, re veals the fact that no precautions havel been taken to preserve tbe purity ol tbe .water supply, , , ;. A hole baa been excavated around the mouth of the upper well, for some pur pose, into which has been dumped a quantity Of fresh horse manure, presum ably to keep the frost Away from the pump. Into this hole the surface water finds ita way and, after filtering through the manure, flows into the well. It ia not a nice subject to write about or talk about or to even think about. .It ia simply disgusting and nauseating, but it amounts to almost criminal negligence on the part of somebody. The Globb does not assume to place the responsibility for this condition of the oity'e water supply on any person. That Is not its business. But it is tbe business of a newspaper to point out auch conditions, when they exist, that ' the public may be Informed. It is tbe public's business. : . And it is tbe business and the duty of our city officials to investigate this mat ter and to adopt prompt and vigorous measures to correct thia evil which threatens the health of the town and they should lose no time in getting to work. The well is nolluted. so is the water in the tank. Both should be thoroughly cleansed. Typhoid gemis lurk in iui rUimlnn Jins certainlv ho, I onnnuh tvnhnid rill rill If the DHHt two years. NOI Caledonian Concert. iiie M'ou n c'tiirpri given iHki t'ri'iHv evening In Armory ball wa a iur-PM. It wna more, It easily standi at the head of all similar events ever given lu Eastern Oregon. - The town began to Oil with people from tbe surrounding country at noon and by dark the crowd was almoat aa dense ai at an ordinary Fourth of July The door of the hall were opened at 7:15 and In a brief time the room was packed with the largest crowd of human ity ever gathered under one roof in Con dun. The program wai lengthy one lusting about two hours, but It wai en tertaining and the time passed quickly with the audience, At 8:00 o'clock, sharp, Worthy Chief J. M. Cameron, who presided, Judge Cameron, of Portland, tbe speaker of the evening, and Worthy Chief Rettle, of tbe Fossil Club, took tbelr places on tbe platform. After an Instrumental selection by lo cal talent, Chief Cameron In a few well chosen remarks bid the audience wel come and Introduced the speaker of the evening. Judge Cameron responded briefly, but In a pleasing manner and the program, consisting of Scotch longs and, dance, recitation, and vocal and Instrumental selection! by local talent waa rendered. i The real feature of the evening be cause it wa something now to a Condon audience -was the Scotch dancing, which was executed by Mice Itoale Forbes, Mysle Sharp, and Martha Campbell and Messrs. Fori, Ruddoman, Sharp and Mi-Arthur, all of Portland. These dan cer are said to be among the best In tbelr class on the Pacific coast. They were all dressed in the regulation High land costume and their work called for many encores. Jamie Moon, also of Portland, the only original bagpipe man thla far west, was also on hands and fur nished music for the dancers and his music was highly appreciated. It was also something new to tbe average Con- doulte. Excellent vocal and instrument ki music by Mesdames Stephenson, Bar ker, Crorfiuld, lU'lniicher nd Mlssea Lilla and Florence Clarke, Belle Wilson and Messrs. Clarke, Fraxer and Wilson Interspersed the program and also called ur many encores. Excellent! delivered recitations were rendered by Mra. F. M. Filter, of Condon Miss Susie McFarlane ol Fossil, Mis Forbea, of Portland, and L. W. Darling of Condon. Mr Clark, of near Condon also entertained tbe audience with a song, and upon being recalled recited the well known selection "Roger and I." The recitation was really well delivered and it is to be regretted that the order waa not better during its delivery. At tbe conclusion of tbe program Chief Ret tle of the Fossil Club was introduced and offered a few well chosen remarks to the Caledonians, closing with a tribute to tbe memory of Robert Burns, that poet who is so dear to the memory of every Scot. Tbe floor was then cleared for dancing and a free social bop, which lasted until 5:30 was enjoyed by all who so desired. Excellent suppers were served at mid night at the Condon hotel and Rinehart's restaurant. Saturday was a gala day. The Scotch vlsilora from Portland and other points were entertained iu the true Condon fashion. Another dance in the hall Saturday evening wound up tbe season of merry making. Tbe Portland parties left for home Sunday morning and by Sunday afternoon quiet reigned supreme. , George Martin and Stewart Campbell who accompanied the Scotch delegation to Arlington Suuday, returned Tuesday. They report having bud a fine trip. A two hour atop was made at Clem, where Piiwr Moon unlimbered hia pipes and an impromptu Sunuert and dance was given. A warm invitation was extended the party to stop at Olex and give a con cert but time would not permit. Tbe Portland people were delighted with their outing and will no doubt long re member their visit to Gilliam county and the royal entertainment accorded them by their bunch-grass countrymen. "Municipal Judge Cameron returned this morning Irom Condon where he at tended a meeting of tbe Ctiledonian Club. Judge Cameron declares that the wether up there is as cold as charity and the snow Is 18 Inches deep." Tele gram. ' When the judge left Condon he had a howling toothache. This may account for the gloomy view he takes of the glo riously salubrious climate of grand old Gilliam county. Had To Conquer Or Die.
