Let a plain, blunt statment be made here and now. Causes of a great war are making as surely and rapidly now, if somewhat more under the surface, as they were made from 1820 to 18(50. It may not come; we are wiser: we look back on the war of Rebellion and ay it was inevitable; no wisdom eould have avoided it, and this is true. So very likely, in 1950, the 200,000.000 people of this country will look back on bloodier fields than were ever seen before in the world's history and say: "No it could not be helped," Why? it will be asked. This is not a statement of what is desirable or hoped for; merely a slight forecast of things to be, as surely as there is not a speedy and radical change in the policy and conduct of the dominant party in this country. Pullman Ordinary Sleepers The tourist travel between the East and the Pacific Coast has reached enor mous proportions in the last few years, and calls for a special class of equipment. To meet this demand the Pullman Co. has issued from .its shops what it tech nically calls the'TuIlman Ordinary Sleeper." These cars appear similar to the regular sleepers being built on the same plan, but not furnished with the same elegance. They are equipped with mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows, pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes, ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to be furnished by the paesenger. Each car has a stove for making tea and coffee and doing "light housekeeping", and each section can befitted with an adjust able table. A uniformed porter accom panies each car, his business being to make np berths; keep the car clean, and look after the wants and comforts of the passengers. In each of the trains which are dispatched daily from Portland by the O. It. & N. Co. is to be found one of these "Pullm.m Ordiniry Sleepers".
