great tragedy was not a dream
even though their elder sons' seats
were vacant at the breakfast table.
Let a plain, blunt statment be
made here and now. Causes of a
great war are making as surely
and rapidly now, if somewhat more
under the surface, as they were
made from 1820 to 18(50. It may
not come; we are wiser: we look
back on the war of Rebellion and
ay it was inevitable; no wisdom
eould have avoided it, and this is
true. So very likely, in 1950, the
200,000.000 people of this country
will look back on bloodier fields
than were ever seen before in the
world's history and say: "No it
could not be helped," Why? it
will be asked. Answer: Because
the Governmeut sold and sur
rendered itself to hogs, cormorants
vampires, gourmands, humbugs,
swindlers, rascals, grafters, thieves
and robbers. Mind, this is what
they will say; will they be right?
It is easier to look backward than

Pullman Ordinary Sleepers
The tourist travel between the East
and the Pacific Coast has reached enor
mous proportions in the last few years,
and calls for a special class of equipment.
To meet this demand the Pullman Co.
has issued from .its shops what it tech
nically calls the'TuIlman Ordinary
Sleeper." These cars appear similar to
the regular sleepers being built on the
same plan, but not furnished with the
same elegance. They are equipped with
mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows,
pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes,
ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to
be furnished by the paesenger. Each
car has a stove for making tea and coffee
and doing "light housekeeping", and
each section can befitted with an adjust
able table. A uniformed porter accom
panies each car, his business being to
make np berths; keep the car clean, and
look after the wants and comforts of the
passengers. In each of the trains which
are dispatched daily from Portland by
the O. It. & N. Co. is to be found one
of these "Pullm.m Ordiniry Sleepers".

Among the most romtortablo and
elegant ranch homes in Eastern Oregon

Mayville. These men settled on thcrir

Mr. Qiinn and has been pronounced
finer work than can be done in Tort

Quite a number of the people from
onr vicinity took in the circus at
Heppneror rather the circus took them
in) as (it was a tame affair considering
the amount of advertising it did. ,
John M. Brown and wife went to
Hood ltiver to attend Camp Meeting
this week.
E. R. Sloan of i.oat Vatlej was over
this week and purchased a new chain
mowing machine from Mttlock & Ham
being the first of the kind brought to
our ourg. . f

Valley school in a few days and will
