The Salem Sentinel again bobs up with the announcement that Salem "the point at which all things political centre ant from which radiate state-wide political movements is now and has tor a long lime been without a bed-rock republican paper." What the deuoe has the Sentinel been all these three or four years of its existence? The Sentinel now proposes to be "independent in all things and republican in politics." What will Hanna and the Salem Hog think of that?r It also proposes to support republican nominees (city, county state and national) without first placing a price on such support'' Won't that be a soft tb:ng for the Marion County grafter whether he is at home or whether he is vegetatingjn the bunch-grass couu tryf ' IDEALS IN POLITICS. Hon. Wayne MacVeagb, who filled the important position of Attorney-general in President Garfield's cabinet, recently deliv ered an oration before the Phi Beta Kappa at its annual meeting at Cambridge, Massachusetts, which has attracted unusual, attention. Among other things Mr. MacVeagb said: "It seems to me quite too plain for dispute that no single member of a weaker race can be killed, no hut of such a racejhowever humble, can be burned, no one can be select ed for especial honor for his part in such pitiful warfare without its helping to light the torch which starts the fire by which 6ome hap less negro is to be burned at the stake in our own country, not only in defiance, but in contempt of law, and all such acts must be surely followed by greater insecur ity for the surplus wealth which the contented class possesses. "Now it is at least quite possible in the not distant future American politics : may f transform Webster's warning into history, for our elec torate ia already beginning to be di vided and must, in obedience "to the law ot social evolution, continue more and more to be divided by that sharp cleavage which sepa rates those who are contented with their lot from those who are dis contented with their lot.- . "Under whatever disguise, called by whatever names, inheriting or seizing whatever partisan organiz ations, "the alignment of the two great political divisions of Ameri can voters who will sooner or , later struggle against each other for possession of the government, will inevitably be upon the basis I have named. The party of the content ed will be ranged under one banuer and the party of the disconteuted will be ranged under the other, and that alignment will steadly de velop, increasing sharpness of di vision, until the party of the dis contented, being the majority, has obtained the control of the Govern ment, to which, under our system, they are entitled, and they will be sure to remodel the present system for the distribution of wealth, unless we have previously done so, upon a basis wiser and more equitable than that now existing. The one party will be, under whatever name the party of capital, and the other will be, under whatever name, tne party of labor. . 'It certainly would tend to make private property far more secure in America if the less fortunate majority of our population saw us ef the more fortunate minority giving courage., and time and thought to. efforts to solve 'these The Same Old Story. More fun than you could wave a 4-year-old juniper club at was experienced at the lodge meeting of the local Elks last Thursday night. A big, jolly crowd was in attendance, and that prince of good fellows. Attorney Sara VanVactor, of Condon, was the candidate for initia tion. This was the first time the lodge had had an opportunity of trying its recently imported Angora goat, and the best way to find out as to whether or not it was a success is to ask Lawyer Sam VanVactor, of Gilliam county. So long as he lives, Sam will never forget the night he joined the Elks, neither will any of the jolly members who were present on this occasion. Hepp ner Times. Heartburn. Pullman Ordinary Sleepers The tourist travel between the East and the Pacific Coast has reached enor mous proportions in the last few years, and calls for a special class of equipment. To meet this demand the Pullman Co. has issued from its shops what it tech nically calls the"Pollman Ordinary Sleeper." These cars appear similar to tbe regular sleepers being built on the same plan, but not furnished with the same elegance. They are equipped with mattresses, blankets, sheets, pillows, pillow-cases, towels, combs, brushes, ect. , requiring nothing of the kind to be furnished by the passenger. Each car has a stove for making tea and coffee and doing "light housekeeping", and each section can befitted with an adjust able table. A uniformed porter accom panies each car, his business being to make up berths; keep the car clean, and look after the wants and comforts of the passengers. In each of the trains which are dispatched daily from Portland by the O. R. & N. Co. is to be found one of these "Pullman Ordinary Sleepers". The car attached to the "Chicago-Portland Special" goes through to Chicego without change, and the one in the "Atlantic Express" runs to Kansas City without change, " Passengers in this car for Chicago change to a similar car at Granger. Much of the first class travel is being carried in these cars, the rates being lower, and the service nearly equal to that in the Dalace sleeners. For rates snd full information, includ ing folders write to . f. A. L. Cbaio, General Passenger Agent, O. R. & N. Co, Portland, Oregon. Reduced Rates, Arenow in effect toBnffalo, New York.
