Bill Snell sold 10 mules and a few horses last week. They were bought for government purposes. Prof. Spight, of the Grass Valley Academy, was doing os last week in the interest of his school. Mrs. G. S. Smith, who has been lyinir dangerously ill at Mr. Randall's house for the last three weeks, ia now im proving slowly. That about the Russian thistle? Shall we give the country over to this peBt? Already we hear some men de claring they are not going to waste time cutting tbem. We would like to hear from those in authority, who are eipected to enforce law and order. LONE ROCK. Mr. and Mrs. Little, of Arlington, are visiting friends at this place. The weather has been cool and pleas ant since the rain storm last week. Our hotel keeper is up in the timber this week watching nis tared man maae cord wood. Frank Stewart is back again from the Willamette valley. Mrs. Stewart is still in the Valley country. Hay hauling is about over in this lo cality, and quite a nuaineroi our people are out in me larunng country at wort Miss Annie Ward returned to her home near Albany last week, after a couple of weeks' visit with relatives here. . -. . We notice tbe statement in the Hepp ner Times this week that John Madden built the new 4 mile grade out of Lone Kock, which is the finest in the country, etc. This is a mistake, as tbe new grade was built by Mr. JJowen. , , Bob Robinett will move over to Rock creek the last of the week for the pur- Duee of boarding, the road workers. We re informed that the hands will receive J2.00 per day fur work and board them telves. Their boatd will cost them 50 cents per day. Mrs. M. J. Perrv and her daughter Edith, of Milton, Umatilla county, came down last week and are visiting her nsin. Mrs. J. B. (ioff. and aunt, Mrs. Vickers, of this place. Miss Perry is auionsr the most accomplished and sue cessful teachers in tbe public schools of ber home county John Madden went to Heppner the ' first of the week to get a supply of picks and shovels, and work will begin soon on the new road out of Rock creek on the Lone Bock and Heppner road. An entire new grade of 3 miles will be made on the west side, and on the east side the ro.id will be put on a good eaay grade. The Lone Rock people will feel like celebrating when the new road is cour pleted, as much inconvenience has been experienced since the washing away ol the old road. Some of the inhabitants living on the road south of town were considerably alarmed Inst Saturday morning on seeing J. M. Williams pass along the road in a . auiet manner with a long box in his back and several men on horseback fol Ijwing along behind. Of course the people thought of a sudden death and a funeral, but when some of them went to town they were informed that the K. of P. goat had died suddenly and his friends were taking his carcass over to me town of Snrav. where, we have since learned. the goat came to life and is now doing service for tbe new lodge at mat place. Perry Ham, the well-known Lone liuck merchant, was in town yesterday. David Mason, a former assessor of this county, now witb the Arlington Warehouse Co., was here during tbe week in tbe interest of that firm. Robert J. Marsh, of the Marsh Print ing Company, of Portland, formerly publisher of The Dalles Chronicle, was run down by a Portland street car Men day evening and fatally injured. - Collis P. Huntington, president of the Southern Pacific Railroad Com paiiy, died at bis camp, Tine Knot, at Racouetts lake in the Adirondacks at 12 o'clock Monday night. Apoplexy was the cause of death. D. S. Brown and W. N. Brown return ed Monday evening from an extended trip through Grant county, where tbey were looking lor came, iney uiaue no purchases, as the prices asked in that county are out of eight. Arthur Myers was in from Ferry Can yon Saturday. Mr. Myers has a full t'rew operating his header outtit aud ttill has a run f about 10 days. The annual Teachers Institute, under the supervision of County Superintend ent Seal, will convene next Monday, August 20. State Superintendent Ackerman and other prominent instructors will be pres ent and the meeting is expected to be the best ever held in the county. The law makes it compulsory on every teacher in the county to attend this Institute, and aside from it being a duty we believe the teachers will find it to be real pleasure. Prevented A Tragedy. Thomas Watson, an aged pioneer of this county, died at his home in Fossil at an earlv hour Saturday morning. Mr. Watson was stricken witb blindness while working on top of bis windmill tower in Fossil during the hot weather a few weeks ago, due to becoming over heated, and he never recovered from the effects of that attack. He was one of the earliest settlers of this section of Eastern Oregon and in early days was engaged in the stock business. Later he engaged in the mercantile business at Fossil as a partner of the late T. 6. Hoover. Of late years be lived a re tired life. He was unmarried and, so far as known, had no relatives on this coast. A Minister's Good Work.
