It was a waterspout and hail storm com bined and the hull came down like a thousand brick, about the sl.e of tlio fist of a (Irst'Clas pugilist. In places they were piled up A footer moro deep. About half the window in town were broken and much damage was done to some of the orchard and grain crop. J. M. Williams was coming home with a hack load of people and was atru ck by the storm at the lop of the I-ono Ilock grade. They alt jumped from the- hack and the men tried to hold the teitiii by the bit but the horses, crazed by the storm, jrked looso and ran down the grade and over the embankment w here they finally broke loose from tho back, leaving the jiattengrra, two men and two ladies to walk home,' about three mile, through the terrible storm. But termilk canyon la washed oat and is al most impassable even on horseback. The road Is gone from one end of the canyon to the other in many place ditches being washed down through the rock 10 to L'O feet deep. It w ill cost from i(XH) to f l&UO to rebuild the road. Crosfleld, mgr. Big Time at Arlingtori. The wide awake people of Arlington took time by the forelock last Friday and Saturday and celebrated the Fourth of July two weeka in advance. The two day were entirely given over to having a good time arid the business houses (hut up shop and gave everybody a chance to enjoy the sports. On Friday the Heppner and Arlington ball teams played a good gnmo in which Arlington came off victorious but Inter in the day the lleppner boys redeemed themselves In a measure by winning out on Arling ton in a Hose team race. It. A. McCul ly, of Ferry Canyon, "didn't do a thing" to the sprinters in tho foot rnce on Fri day only to bent thum which of course pleased every F'erry Canyon man pres ent. On Saturday tho lone ball team put up ono of the prettiest games against Arlington that has been seen in the county since Condon's crack clnb was dissolved last summer. Iono won the game too, but of course it would not have been polito for tho Arlington boys to have defeated all their guests. Horse racing was a pin t of tho program as was also sieeches, music and a literary pro gram. A grand ball was given Friday night and altogether the people of At- lington "did themselves proud" in the royal manner iu w hich they entertained their guests. Mr. W. 8. The compa ny hopes to have the mail finished and boats running by July 13. The comple tion of thi system will nicsfi much to the people- of this section in reduction in freight rates and It should be the cause of general rejoicing when the first boat load at Arlington, with Gilliam county wheat. John Brown Killed Wednesday evening about ft John W. Brown wa thrown o'clock from a horse near the Hoover creek sehoolhouse and so badly Injured that he died in about three hour. Kxact particulars of the accident will probably never be krown, but circumstances plainly indi how it occurred. He was returning from Ellis lliii;he' place with a 8-year-old colt, for which he had traded, riding the colt barebacked, W. J. Kiiklund, who lives on the road from Lost Valley, had seen Mr, Brown and talked with him as he pasaod with the horse. An hour or two afterwards, when Coming to Fonsil to attend the K. I'. lodge; Mr. Kirkland found the horse loose near tho school- house, and caught and tied hi in op. He saw nothing of Mr. Brown and thought the horse had just got away froiff blui. About the same time, Brown' boy ahd one of Chas, Black's bova lound him lying in the road near the Brown ranch, with his bead bruised and bleeding. He was cohscious, and told the boys to run for help, but expired in a few ml ti les afterwards before any help could ar rive, which, however, from the nature of his injuries could have done nothing for him. Dr. Shaw arrived soon after the unfortunate in fin had breathed hi last. Hit skull w as fractured and fright fully bruiied. Decease. I wa about 49 year of age, and leaves a family of seven children, the eldest, who is married, aged 21, and the youngest about 0 years. He ha lived on Hoover creek about 13 years, aud sold his ranch there only a few weeks ago, and was, intending to leave with his family yesterday for the harvest fields of Eastern Washington. He was well known In Arlington and Conhoh, as ho drove freight teams off and on (or yeArs from Arlington to Fossil and haul ed a good deal of wood to Condon. The heartfelt sympathy of the entire community goes out to the bereft chil dren, whose mother died nesrly five years ago, in their latest, sudden and great bereavement. The funeral took place In Fossil yes terday evening, services being conducted n the M. K. church and at the grave n the Masonic cemetery by Rev.G. It.
