This locality wa visited by the most
terrific storm lant Halurday afternoon,
tl atany of ou' people ever experienced.
It was a waterspout and hail storm com
bined and the hull came down like a
thousand brick, about the sl.e of tlio
fist of a (Irst'Clas pugilist. In places
they were piled up A footer moro deep.
About half the window in town were
broken and much damage was done to
some of the orchard and grain crop.
J. M. Williams was coming home with
a hack load of people and was atru ck by
the storm at the lop of the I-ono Ilock
grade. They alt jumped from the- hack
and the men tried to hold the teitiii by
the bit but the horses, crazed by the
storm, jrked looso and ran down the
grade and over the embankment w here
they finally broke loose from tho back,
leaving the jiattengrra, two men and
two ladies to walk home,' about three
mile, through the terrible storm. But
termilk canyon la washed oat and is al
most impassable even on horseback.
The road Is gone from one end of the
canyon to the other in many place
ditches being washed down through the
rock 10 to L'O feet deep. It w ill cost

Big Time at Arlingtori.
The wide awake people of Arlington
took time by the forelock last Friday
and Saturday and celebrated the Fourth
of July two weeka in advance. The two
day were entirely given over to having
a good time arid the business houses
(hut up shop and gave everybody a
chance to enjoy the sports. On Friday
the Heppner and Arlington ball teams
played a good gnmo in which Arlington
came off victorious but Inter in the day
the lleppner boys redeemed themselves
In a measure by winning out on Arling
ton in a Hose team race. It. A. McCul
ly, of Ferry Canyon, "didn't do a thing"
to the sprinters in tho foot rnce on Fri
day only to bent thum which of course
pleased every F'erry Canyon man pres
ent. On Saturday tho lone ball team
put up ono of the prettiest games against
Arlington that has been seen in the
county since Condon's crack clnb was
dissolved last summer. Iono won the
game too, but of course it would not
have been polito for tho Arlington boys
to have defeated all their guests. Horse
racing was a pin t of tho program as was
also sieeches, music and a literary pro
gram. A grand ball was given Friday
night and altogether the people of At-
lington "did themselves proud" in the
royal manner iu w hich they entertained
their guests.

John Brown Killed
Wednesday evening about ft
John W. Brown wa thrown
o'clock
from a
horse near the Hoover creek sehoolhouse
and so badly Injured that he died in
about three hour. Kxact particulars
of the accident will probably never be
krown, but circumstances plainly indi
how it occurred. He was returning from
Ellis lliii;he' place with a 8-year-old
colt, for which he had traded, riding the
colt barebacked, W. J. Kiiklund, who
lives on the road from Lost Valley, had
seen Mr, Brown and talked with him as
he pasaod with the horse. An hour or
two afterwards, when Coming to Fonsil
to attend the K. I'. lodge; Mr. Kirkland
found the horse loose near tho school-
house, and caught and tied hi in op. He
saw nothing of Mr. Brown and thought
the horse had just got away froiff blui.
About the same time, Brown' boy ahd
one of Chas, Black's bova lound him
lying in the road near the Brown ranch,
with his bead bruised and bleeding.
He was cohscious, and told the boys to
run for help, but expired in a few ml ti
les afterwards before any help could ar
rive, which, however, from the nature
of his injuries could have done nothing
for him. Dr. Shaw arrived soon after
the unfortunate in fin had breathed hi
last. Hit skull w as fractured and fright
fully bruiied.
Decease. I wa about 49 year of age,
and leaves a family of seven children,
the eldest, who is married, aged 21, and
the youngest about 0 years. He ha
lived on Hoover creek about 13 years,
aud sold his ranch there only a few
weeks ago, and was, intending to leave
with his family yesterday for the harvest
fields of Eastern Washington. He was
well known In Arlington and Conhoh,
as ho drove freight teams off and on (or
yeArs from Arlington to Fossil and haul
ed a good deal of wood to Condon.
The heartfelt sympathy of the entire
community goes out to the bereft chil
dren, whose mother died nesrly five
years ago, in their latest, sudden and
great bereavement.
The funeral took place In Fossil yes
terday evening, services being conducted
n the M. K. church and at the grave
n the Masonic cemetery by Rev.G. It.
Archer; A large conconrao of sorrow
