When hot winds blow across the plain ftirdt SjPs rays fiercely heat npon the earth we pray for rain and moderated heat; and if our prayer tfnhecded fall we'll follow a new lay and, swearing Wheat's no king at all, we'll cut him down for hay. But when our prayers are wafted up and upward into space and .in fet-rn the rains come down you'll find a euiiling face on every moth er's son of us and merrily we'll sing and whoop and yell and dance andwell we'll proclaim Wheat the King. . , . THEN AND NOW, Her.,. II. K. Ilines, a pioneer preacher of Oregon, who has wit nessed the wonderful changes of almost a half century in Oregon and Washington, in a recent ad dress before the Umatilla Fipneer Association, gave voice to the fol lowing beautiful word picture of the pioneer days and the present. "I stood one September noonday 47 years ago on a prairie height, not many miles from where we are met today, and looked far out on the misty sea of midday grasses, ly ing asleep over all the vale of the Columbia. All was silent as dim futurity. No voice in all that wild careen of Boundless surf and un flung swells that broke in bloom was heard. No trace was seen of hand of man. There was no sign of life save a shadowy wolf fleeing over the land or a phantom hawk sailing in the sky, blue as a lovely maiden's eye, and deep as the soundless sea. Round the horizon from pole to pole, the land, unmete awaited the coining plowman's glad tfecree to laugh with plenty at his feet. I stood in mute amaze, look ing across the hazy hills to the proud old monarch of the West land, Mount Hood, standing in the hoary glory of his eternity; looked and thought and remembered; and wondered if the time would come when some later pilgrim, long after I was dead, would stand where I then stood, and see the old proph et's vision transmuted into historic fact over the lifeless plains before and beyond me. Yesterday I stood on the self same mound of swelling surf. Lo. bow the vision was changed! The land was ahum with voices of men and the song of reapers, whose knives, keen as sickles, with clatter and rush swept into the drowsy heated wheat, while wide as a sea, green, yellow and brown, the grain fields endlessly rolled down to the far horizon. Hundreds of bright cottage roofB, like sails adrift on a boundless sea, islanded the far aay swjIIs of euerald and gold. Distant spires of church and school lent music of bells tocharm the old silence into attuned harmony of reverence and intelligence. I felt the throb and thrill of the nation's heart as I saw the railway trains shooting north and south and light ning lines running here and there and everywhere in their subtlety, like penitent things to tell to city and country the marvelous story that the century has brought." The spirit of toryism is rampant in this land of the free. . There is the callous, sordid, brutal toryism of Morgan and Hanna, with its contempt for human life, its frank avowal that might makes right, its unsqueamish desire to trample on the weak. There is the far more dangerous toryism of benevolence, fathered by the pulpit and endors ed by the influential and the eonventially religious in all parts of the land. This is the toryism that wishes to control for the good of the controlled. Conscious of their God given superiority ;" its apostles would fain force their fel lows to do as they in their om niscience should direct. Justice seems to play small part in this philosophy. It is founded on a perverted and very human wisdom which nn analysis reeolves' into that colossal error" a'nd' fioary wick ed ness of doing evil that good may come. We aro lacking. in demo cratic ways. We are forgetting the virtue of simplicity. We have be gun to respect the rich and to lack it for those who do their share of the world's-' work. lie who greets another obsequiously or begs a gratuity or dona a livery may pos sibly have been born under the American ling, but in the act he repudiate? his democratic heritage and ceases to be an' American. "Public sentiment it every thing. With public sentitufent nothing can fail, without it nothing can succeed; consequently be who moulds pub lie sentiment goes deeper than be who enacts statutes or pronounces decisions." Abraham Lincoln. The price of sugar has moved up a peg 35 cents a 100. That will make the sugar trust several hun dred thousand, and will not hurt the public, you know, for if the people do not want to pay it they can do without sugar. The trust should raise it higher, for the price of sugar does not hurt the people, j especially the poor people who have no money to buy sugar anyhow. What difference does it make how rich some people get? Are not the rich a blessing to the country? And would not the people starve if the rich did not give them employ ment? I am often lo6t in deep meditation trying to fathom the myetery'of how the human race kept from starving before there were any rich men to employ themf Therefore rejoice that we have rich men to raise the price of sugar and thus maintain civilization and progress. Ex. A Sprained Ankle Quickly Cured. " At one time I suffered from a severe sprain of the ankle," says Geo. E. Cary, editor of the Gi'idk, Washington, Va. "After using several well recommended medicines without success, I tried Cham berlain's Pain Balm, and am pleased to say that relief came as soon as I began its ose and a complete enre speedily fol lowed."
