The English words had seemed too fain, But these they drew us heart to heart, let held us tenderly apart; She said, "Auf wiedersehenr James Russell Lowell. . I WUhelmlna. - s K fittfttf ANTED In a publlsh WaW ing house, a weU-edu- cated woman; must be over 30 years of age. "Isn't it mean- I don't seem to fit in anywhere. Young girls and old women are In demand, but a girt of 23 Is neith er young nor old; a drug in the mar ket"' WUhelmlna Thurston looked dis gusted. "You would Just fit la there, WHIT aid her sister, reflectively. WUhelmlna went to the mirror and took the pins from her luxuriant balr, which was rolled back loosely from her face and colled on the crown of her head. She parted the hair down the middle and drew It back plain, braiding It and dressing it low. It was unbe coming, for her rather severs type of beauty was rendered stern by the change. "I have made up my mind," said WU helmlna, going to the closet and taking therefrom her darkest gown, a dull gray, "to apply for that position. With a stiff collar and no color to brighten me np, I shall look antiquated enough to escape detection. It will injure no one but myself, and I want work badly enough to add eight years to my age. I shall claim to be 31." Alice Thurston langhed. "You are desperate, Will, and no wonder; bot I fear one lie will not suffice; you are not an adept in deceiving." "You wait," was tbe answer. Sidney Spencer sat In his private office, with a bored look on his face and a pile of manuscript at his elbow. Out side In the main office tbe clerks nudged each other and tittered, as young men will when tbe proprietor Is out of sight "Another antiquated female!" whis pered John Stanwood to bis neighbor, as a light step on tbe stair was beard. A moment later Wilheluilua was ush ered into Spencer's office. "How old are youT" was the first query. "Thirty-one," she said, bravely. "What experience?" "Ten years in a newspaper office." This was true, for while a mere child she had assisted her father on the Dally Bulletin, now among the missing journals. Spencer looked Intently at the applicant Sbe seemed more prom ising than the rest "Are you sure you are 317 You look young, very young." WUhelmlna rose to the occasion. Her assumption of offended dignity would have deceived a keener man than Spencer. "I'm sorry, sir, to have troubled yon; perhaps you require a certificate of birth. Unfortunately I bave none. Good afternoon." "Watt a moment! Pardon me. You do not understand why I am so partic ular In regard to age. There are a dozen young Idiots in my employ who waste their time In attentions to a younger woman. Harmless enough, I'll admit but this Is not a courting school, and the work requires undivided atten tion." "I understand. I was young once myself." She sighed. There was an awkward silence. "Thirty-one Is not old," said Spencer encouragingly. "It only seems old to fellows In tbe twenties." "Thirty-one Is a respectable age and needs no apology ," was.tbe tart reply. Her gray eyes snapped and she looked fierce. "She'll do," said Spencer to himself; "there will be no flirting." Aloud he said: "Can yon stay this morning and help me out with this?" Indicating tbe pile of manuscript ' "I shall be g'ad to begin at once," was ber reply. A half-dozen times dur lDg tbe morning WUhelmlna caught her employer looking curiously at ber; she wondered If be suspected ber de celt At night he said pleasantly: "I am well satisfied with what you bave done." So sbe was engaged. Much as she longed to appear ber own pretty self, WUhelmlna dared not put aside ber' dark, unornamented gown and tightly drawn back balr. With these she assumed a dignified, old-fashioned manner of speech and action that kept her youthful cowork ers at a distance. 4 Her desk being In Spencer's office, and the fact' tbat much of tbelr work was done jointly, placed them on a familiar footing. It was agreeable work, and bad she not been acting a part WUhelmlna would bave thorough ly enjoyed It A date In an article one day led Spencer to tell bis age, 28. After this she felt still more uncom fortable, saying to Alice: "I wondar bow be likes working with bis grand mother?" One morning wben Spencer came In WUhelmlna knew something bad hap pened. In the months tbey bad worked together she bad learned to note every change In bis expressive countenance. She bad also learned to care deeply for bis good opinion; tbe lie sbe bad told him weighed heavily. She found her self wishing that be knew sbe was only 23; five years yonnger than himself. Would It make a difference? This Hording be looked at ber so In tently that sbe blushed. Then be said Abruptly: "What makes women so se cretive in regard to their age? Are added years a crime? You are the first oue I bave met who confesses to 81; you art really younger looking, and art brave not to lie about It." Poor WUhelmlna. Without thinking of the consequences, she said hurried' ly: "I did lie. I am only 23. I ex pected to be caught some time, and I'm foolish enough to step Into tbe trap. Shall I leave this morning?" Spencer rose and closed tbe door Into the outer office. By this time WUhel mlna was gathering np hor belouglngi and crowding them helter-skelter Into ber bag. "What's your hurry?" Spencer asked, putting a detaining hand on ber arm. WUhelmlna looked up Into a face so full of sympathy and tenderness thai the tears of vexation on her lashes mir rored the wonderment in her eyes. "I. waut you to stay, llttlo girl, be causewell, because, I can't live with out you." WUhelmlna concluded to stay. Bos ton Post BEDS IN MANILA. Are Borne what Different from the Kind We Have Here. "Look bere! It Is 9 o'clock and mj bed Isn't made up yet," I beard a new comer expostulating to the luterpretei In the corridor of the Hotel Ortenta We old stagers all laughed. We knew what was coming, but we contented ourselves with a smile. ' "What are you laughing at?" the newcomer asked. "It may be a joke t you, but this blooming hotel furulshei the woodwork and that Is about all There Isn't a stitch of bed clothes, I mattress, or anything but a bolster." We stlU laughed. The Interprets looked imploringly at us and then at the raw recruit "What Is It tbat you desire?" be said finally. "Desire?" the newcomer snapped out "I desire a mattress at least tw sheets, a quilt and a pillow. "I will go now and see tbe proprie tor," said the Interpreter, for that wai whafhe always said. "I got all ready for bed, raised "the mosquito netting and found that there wasn't a thing for me to sleep on." . We all smiled pityingly and went on with our tales of camp and tbe firing Une. There was no use of trying to tell a newcomer that bere in Manila we never used a mattress, a set of springs, a pillow or a sheet We would have deprived him of what be bad come so far to learn by personal experience had we read him a homily on Philippine customs. Tbe interpreter soon re turned and I beard blm saying: 'The proprietor says, sir, that be wlU end you a sheet, but be Is sorry to say, sir, that he has not a mattress or s quilt nor a pillow, except tbe bolstei that is on your bed." The language of the newcomer thai followed Is unfit for publication. Tlx mattressless and qulltless Filipino hvi Is a characteristic of tbe country. It Ii the one thing thai Is suitable for th climate, and we soon learned to respect this ske'eton of a bed, the perforated cane bottom of which enabled us t keep cool In the hottest weather. It Ii quite a jump, though, from a comfort able tick aud linen sheets to" a bed n softer than tbe scat of a rane chair but once taken, like other tropical lux urles. It becomes essential to comfort and rest Leslie's Weekly. John Was Heady. Id these days of proposed interna tlonal alliances it is Interesting to real of tbe little difficulty In which a Chi cago newsboy found himself Involved and bow bo extricated himself there from. . - He bad wandered over Into one ol the "foreign quarters," on the West Side, where one can bear almost ever language except our vernacular, ani he was set upon by two or three boys He defended himself bravely ani was holding bis own fairly well, untf tbe two or, three were joined by fu many more, and then the battle begat to go against blm. "Say!" be yelled to a group of boyi watcblng the fight from the sidewalk 'Is there an English boy In the crowd? "Yes," shouted a stockily built urch In of about his own size. "Come yere, then !" panted the youni American, laying about him with al bis might "an' we'U clean out the bu) gang!" And they did. Good Reason. Storeteepers at times resort to In genious methods to attract trade. The following is said to be an exact cop; of a placard displayed in front of s store In a Southern town: "Step inside and get the greatest bar gains you'll ever get again." Here la an announcement posted bj a Russian shopkeeper In front of hit place of business: "Tbe reason why I bave hitherto been able to seU my goods so muct cheaper than anybody else Is tbat 1 am a bachelor, and do not need U make a profit for the maintenance ol wife and children. It Is now my dutj to Inform tbe public tbat this ad van tage will shortly be withdrawn front them, as I am about to be married They will, therefore, do well to makt tbelr purchases at once at the old rate.' Simply Calculated. For finding tbe average number ol years which persons of any age maj expect to live there is a very slmpli rule. If tbe present age be deducted from eighty, two-thirds of the remain der Is tbe answer required. This resuli Is not absolutely accurate, but It Ii near enough. For Instance, a mar aged 20 might by this rule, expect t Uve forty years longer, which is just what tbe latest actuarial tables glvo At 40 the expectation of life works out at nearly 27 years, while tbe tablet give It as more than twenty-five years At 00 tbe above rule allows just ovei thirteen years, and the table shows i little less.
