Ah, in that chamber, whose rich air
To breathe in thought I scarcely dare,
Thinks she, "Auf wlederschenl

The turf that silences the lane;
I hear the rustle of her dress,
I suwll the lilacs, and ah, yes,
I hear, "Auf wledersehenl"
Sweet piece of bashful maiden art!
The English words had seemed too fain,
But these they drew us heart to heart,
let held us tenderly apart;

WUhelmlna went to the mirror and
took the pins from her luxuriant balr,
which was rolled back loosely from her
face and colled on the crown of her
head. She parted the hair down the
middle and drew It back plain, braiding
It and dressing it low. It was unbe
coming, for her rather severs type of
beauty was rendered stern by the
change.
"I have made up my mind," said WU
helmlna, going to the closet and taking
therefrom her darkest gown, a dull
gray, "to apply for that position. With
a stiff collar and no color to brighten
me np, I shall look antiquated enough
to escape detection. It will injure no

Alice Thurston langhed. "You are
desperate, Will, and no wonder; bot I
fear one lie will not suffice; you are not
an adept in deceiving."
"You wait," was tbe answer.
Sidney Spencer sat In his private
office, with a bored look on his face and
a pile of manuscript at his elbow. Out
side In the main office tbe clerks
nudged each other and tittered, as

"Another antiquated female!" whis
pered John Stanwood to bis neighbor,

A moment later Wilheluilua was ush
ered into Spencer's office.
"How old are youT" was the first
query.
"Thirty-one," she said, bravely.
"What experience?"
"Ten years in a newspaper office."
This was true, for while a mere child
she had assisted her father on the
Dally Bulletin, now among the missing
journals. Spencer looked Intently at
the applicant Sbe seemed more prom
ising than the rest "Are you sure you
are 317 You look young, very young."
WUhelmlna rose to the occasion. Her
assumption of offended dignity would
have deceived a keener man than
Spencer.
"I'm sorry, sir, to have troubled yon;
perhaps you require a certificate of
birth. Unfortunately I bave none.
Good afternoon."
"Watt a moment! Pardon me. You
do not understand why I am so partic
ular In regard to age. There are a
dozen young Idiots in my employ who
waste their time In attentions to a
younger woman. Harmless enough, I'll
admit but this Is not a courting school,
and the work requires undivided atten
tion." "I understand. I was young once
myself." She sighed. There was an
awkward silence.
"Thirty-one Is not old," said Spencer
encouragingly. "It only seems old to
fellows In tbe twenties."
"Thirty-one Is a respectable age and
needs no apology ," was.tbe tart reply.
Her gray eyes snapped and she looked
fierce.
"She'll do," said Spencer to himself;
"there will be no flirting." Aloud he
said: "Can yon stay this morning and
help me out with this?" Indicating tbe
pile of manuscript '
"I shall be g'ad to begin at once,"
was ber reply. A half-dozen times dur
lDg tbe morning WUhelmlna caught
her employer looking curiously at ber;
she wondered If be suspected ber de
celt At night he said pleasantly: "I
am well satisfied with what you bave
done." So sbe was engaged.
Much as she longed to appear ber
own pretty self, WUhelmlna dared not
put aside ber' dark, unornamented
gown and tightly drawn back balr.
With these she assumed a dignified,
old-fashioned manner of speech and
action that kept her youthful cowork
ers at a distance. 4
Her desk being In Spencer's office,

was done jointly, placed them on a

Poor WUhelmlna. Without thinking
of the consequences, she said hurried'
ly: "I did lie. I am only 23. I ex
pected to be caught some time, and
I'm foolish enough to step Into tbe trap.
Shall I leave this morning?"
Spencer rose and closed tbe door Into
the outer office. By this time WUhel

"What's your hurry?" Spencer asked,
putting a detaining hand on ber arm.
WUhelmlna looked up Into a face so
