A PLEA FOX IfOJJS'OM Tt beats- Ifcw detee how quickly some men forget thei r youth. This reflection ia caused by reading the numerous vicious attacks being made by maitjr f oar esteemed contemporaries, cm Lieutenant Dick Hobson because he has just starred the country and knocked the girl kissing record into smithereens. For eii&nie, brethren! Have you ( soon forgotten the halcyon days of your own youth, when, with a freshly-sprouted, young mustache, made fierce and terrible, by a copi ous application of French pomatum, or some other vile stuff, you sallied fwth at eventide and roamed the country o'er in quest of some sweet maid who would favor you with just one little kiss? You've all doue it, you sly, old bald-headed rascals, and after walking seven mile through mud and slush and bramble brush and kissing one girl once aiwi then walking home again -after losing seven hours' sleep that you needed in your business while hoeing corn on some rocky hillside next day you thought you was a dandy, a crackerjack, the smartest . young fellow in yonr school district, and a regular lady tiller to boot. Now didn't you? Of course you d:d; and if by any flight of fancy you could have for one moment imagined such a feast of osculatory bliss falling to your lot, as the one Dickey Hobson has just heroically waded through, your heart would have went pitty-pat so fast and so long that you couldn't have caught your breath for a week. For shame! You give poor Hobson fits for doing what you've done yourselves every time you had an opportunity which wasn't once for each thousand times you've wished you could. This lecture is intended for all editors who harp about Hobson, kick about kissing, and growl at the pretty girls. Jim Stewart, of the Fossil Journal, needn't read it He's all right. We'll gamble that if he were placed ia Hobson's late trying position he'd put on his blandest smile and offer himself as a willing sacrifice. Ditto here. ' Under certain circumstances CoL Bryan would be the logical candi- 1900. That is if there had been no war, and the money question were to be made the sole issue. But the . settlement of our colonial policy, or rather the establishment of a new government for our new pos sessions, will be a factor in the next election, and will be aquestion for llr. McKinleyV successor to solve. With this important issue Col. Bryan is not the best man to lead the democratic hosts. Admi ral Dewey, however, would be a popular candidate, and when elect ed would be a most acceptable president While he may not have any politics, as has been stated by some, he is a true American, his sympathies are with the masses, and be is free from entangling in fluences. Dewey is a more prefer able candidate than Bryan. Times , Mountaineer. . XMAS PRESENTS did you say? Well, I guess COMPTON & GEORGE take the lead in that line. The immigration? convention, which ia t3 meet ia Portland on the 2lst inst., mention of which is trado in another column, is1 a mat ter of prime importance to- the state in general and to Gilliam county in particular, from a Oil Iiatn county standpoint, Thore are thousands of acres of the finest wheat land on earth lying un developed in this V county, that should be bringing forth an abun dant harvest each year. There is room for more good, live, progress ive people in this county, and it is to the interest of those of us who are here to encourage such persons to come and settle among us. Ev ery acre of new land which is brought under cultivation, every bushel of wheat produced in excess of the previous crop is a benefit to our county and our state, and is an addition to the aggregate wealth which Oregon should represent. It's a good thins. Push it along. The Chariton Courier tells about a little girl who was much addicted to the use of slang. One day when she had been very naughty her mother said: "Now Edith, yon must go and shut yourself up in a dark closet and ask God to forgive you and stay there until he does." Into the closet she went, but in about a minute she appeared with a radiant face. "Why." exclaimed ruxnjmnnnarijutnnnn What to buy as a Christ mas present for your wife,, sister or sweetheart, hus band, brother or lover, as the case may be?
