THE ' A'Ett SENATOR Th eenatoriaf contesC at Salem, which a week ago gave fair promise t.f developinginta another difgr!oe ful deadlock similar to that of tvv. years ago, whs broogbt t,tj an al, rnpt Umiii)a.tk last 8Wrdu y h the eUmhmtiorv of Mr. Corbpitvl i name frot thts contest and the sub sequent election o Jtoseph Siuum. Of Portland, i; While Mr. Simon way not have Been the choice of a Majority of the people of Eastern Oregon, there Keema- to be general ft-eling of satisfaction that the contest is ndcdand that our legislators can now devote their energies to other matters which for thy past two years have demanded attention. Mr. Simon ia a young man of more-than ordinary force in the political arena, and he will enter upon bis duties as a representative of the grand com'ui on wealth of Oregon, in the highfet legsilative body of the land, at a time that is j fraught with wouderful possibilitieo forth Pacific Northwest. At no time since Oregon has been a state has there been more work of an important character awaiting the bands of our .representatives in congress than there is at the pres ent lime. Mr. Simon has a splen did opportunity for distinguishing himself in his new position, by the advocacy and successful carrying out of numerous measurtsin which the people of the state are interest ed, and it remains to be seen whetheror not he will take ad vantage of his opportunities. One way in which he can make hiui clf solid with the people of Eastern Oregon is by securing an open river to the sea and every one. without regard to factional feeling er political proclivities, will uphold Liin in the prosecution of such a work. There is one thing sure about the proposition, and that is that, sooner or later the Columbia tcuat be made navigable, 'and the senator or congressman who at this time refuses er- neglects to use his influence and untiring efforts in the direction of an open waterway will lose the chance of a lifetime to "get next to" the inasses of the people.
