Billy Keys, the Mayville merchant, was in town yesterday and Informed us tat Mayville has had a genuine build ing boom all fall and this winter, to such an extent that the nolso of the hammer nd saw is almost deafening. A dozen or more fine, new buildings have gone up recently and preparation are being made for the building of a doeen or so more, among which will bo a large 40x70 f(. livery stable by J.S, Matney, a drug store and numerous other new enter prises. Some of them over there believe that the boom will not stop until May ville is the largest town in the county. It certainly is a beautiful location for a large town, there being no better in the entire inland country, and is situated n tbe center of the richest and greatest wheat bolt In Eastern Oregon. It is given out that there will bo a social dance at Olex on the 15th inst. Thoa Malanaphy received a telegram laat Saturday that his mother is serious ly 111 in Iowa. Melvln Logan was at Olex last week looking for a preacher to tie a nuptial not for him, but at last accounts be bad not found him. Look like any one could tie a hangman's knot. The Condon road from Beyer's to Olex was looked over last week ana a gooa route selected, which will shorten the distance and give an outlet to Olex (or the residents along the route. Mrs T C Mobley was reelected soper- ntendent of Olex Sunday school for the ensuing year, as were all of the old of' fleers. Olex is said to conduct the best Sunday school In the county every Sua day at 11 a. m. Everybody invited. This is very foagy weather, with indi cations for snow, but the temperature is so low you would not think it winter, If we are going to have much severe weather it will have to get at it pretty soon, as H of July will soon bo upon us, Dinner atthe pleasant home of Mr and Mrs T C Mobley on New Year's day was enjoyed by Prof Nott and family, LO Ralston and family, J A Cmm and wife and 11 D Randall. It was a most enjoy able occasion, and a fuaut long to be je- membereu. We regret to say that, owing to the unexpected illness of Rev Barnhart he was unable to conduct bis revival meet- ngs at Olex last week. This was quite a disappointment, as many people came from quite a distance to be in attend ance. It is reported that Mr Barnhart is seriously 111 with asthma and la grippe. Olox Unity Literary Society was or ganized lust week with a full corps of officers. It meets every Thursday even ing and is strictly literary and free, the only assessment being tor nouattendance. Tho program this Thursday will consist of songs, recitations and dialogues. It Is intended tor the young folks and they are taking great interest in It. LONE ROCK RUMBLINGS. The frost-fog still hangs overhead, mak ing the atmosphere damp and chilly. Rev Barnhart was over from lleppner and preached to the good people of this place last Sunday. Elders Holt and Chase took their de parture from here Inst Tuesday, after preaching a few sermons. Everybody shake hands with Henry Bott, for he was married last Thursday to Miss Emma Stahl, by Rev. 11. C Clark, The good wishes of all our peo ple are with the happy couple. Very little feed has been fed to outside stock up to this time in this locality and all kinds of stock look well. Stockown era feel quite confident that their losses from now until spring will be very light, as they all seem to be well supplied with loeu. There was quite a turnout to the pub lic installation of tho K P officers last Saturday evening, after which the mem bers and their families picked tbe meat off a lot of chicken bones and disfigured a large quantity of pretty cakes and pies and "slch." Doc Moore and Mies Minnie Clark, of Condon, visited our burg Inst Sunday Miss Clark, we learn, came up for tbe purpose of getting baptised by Elder Holt, but the Elder was not here at that time, so the young lady had to return without. It is a guess with some of us whether It was a case of Intention to get baptised or married. ARLINGTON GEMS. The weather is still balmy and spring like. A. Crawford of Lone Rock spent sev eral days In town this week. The telephone company has put in a central office here, with Miss Fernbergcr at the switch board. Mrs V E Houston of Condon has been visiting her sister, Mr Henry Propst, at this place for several days. Bob Watkins packed up' his jewelry and watch-making outfit the first of the year and will soon leave tor Montana. He expects to travel and sell eye-glasses next summer. It shows a splendid line of deposits and that the bank Is in a very healthy and prosper ous condition. The New Year's edition of the Ore- gonian of sixty pages reflects great credit on not only the Oregoniun but the whole Northwest. It Is a wonderful feat, in newspaper work. It will pay any one to read it who contemplates going to the Klondike in the spring. The lleppner eW-ette learns that J P Lucas Is a candidate for the appointment of register of the U. S. lund office at The Dalles. ' No man in tho state could better discharge the duties of register, as he is thoroughly posted on all matters pertain ing to land, and is eminontly qualified for the position. The carload of mules he shipped from here he sold back there and hough t some larger mules and brought thetn back as far as Pendleton and sold them there. Probably by doing business both', ways made the mules come cheaper at both ends of tbe rood. There was no special entertainment here on New Year's day, every one en joyed Ihomgelves according to their own idea, a large number having played at the bowling alley all night; a tew sat up until midnight and rang tho old year out and tbe new in, to the delight of those that were up, and dislike of those who wore waked up from peaceful dreams. The drama "Among the Breakers" was played here on Wednesday night to a crowded house by the borne talent com pany. The seats were all sold last week as soon us they were put on sale. All of tbe different characters performed their respective parts to perfection, and very few of the traveling theatrical companies could do betier. Arlington talent is not to be sneezed at. Death of Mr. Fletcher. After a lingering illness with paralysis, the death of Thomas D. Fletcher oc curred last Fridav at the home of bis eon Steve, on Matney Flat. The burial took place in the cemetery hero Sunday, the funeral services being held in tbe church by Rov. F. L. Johns. The deceased was 71 years of age the day before his death, and leaves an aged wife and eleven children to uiuurn his death. He was born in London, Canada, residod in Michigan about thirty years and then came to this coast, residing for a number of years at Walla Walla aud on the Sound. A New Marriage Service.
