THE MDOII GLOBE. FRIDAY t JANUARY 7. 1898. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COUNTY. OREQON. Portland is making a great show at trying to get transposition of provision!' to the foolhardy Yukon miners, and her wholesale merchants have generously contributed thousands of dollars. At the same time a poor woman was per mitted to starve to death within easy walking distance of the busiest part of the city. The city board of charities had been appealed to in vain. Borne kind Christian ladies did, however, furnish the little children some picture book? and toys, while their cries for food were unheeded. Shame on you, Portland; feed your own starving poor and then send the surplus to Klondike. Grant County News. ; State School Supt. Irwin was severely criticised by the teachers in attendance at the State Teachers' Association in Portland last Thursday. They severely denounced the reckless and wholesale issuance of state diplomas during his incumbency of office, and referred to his office as "diploma grinding machine." Snpt, Daggett and wife, of Arlington, were present, and Mr. Daggett, the Ore gonian says, "made a strong plea for teachers strong in mind, morals and health. Applicants for certificates should be required to sign a certificate that they are free from certain Immoralities." A Pendleton editor has no faith in the apple cure. He says: "Somebody is writing for the papers that apples eaten Just before retiring i a great help to di gestion. We tried it and about 2 o'clock we dreamed that a red-fire dragon with a pea-green tail, and eyes as big as a soup plate was carving us np with a meat saw and a sword. We finally awoke to find our good wife fanning us with a bed slat and trying to get the baby out of the coal scuttle where we had pat it to keep the dragon from getting it. Darn the apples; give ns prunes 1" A constant reader of this paper, who formerly resided at Arlington but is now in business at North Takima, in a pri vate letter to us this week concludes by saying that the Globe's namerous read ers in that city all agree that it is the best little country paper they ever saw for live, interesting local news. lie also highly compliments the paper's able corps of correspondents, and to show his appreciation of oar Arlington Cor. he says be will present him with a fine new bat if he learns his name and number. I have at my ranch near.CIom two varieties ot flue potatoes one purple, with white around the eyes that I imported, and is called the "Centen nial;" the other I originated here and hare named it "The Gold Btaudard," because I don't think It will depreciate in value as wholesome food. Both kinds are snow-white inside and of a most delicious flavor. They are easily grown without cultivation, and the yield is very large. They prow to enormous slse, many of them 5 and 6 pounds apiece. I can sjiare a few of these potatoes for seed at 2c per 100-lb lots, or 2'.,o for smaller lots, at my ranch. Those wanting any of them must order soon, aa the supply is limited. Z. T. Dodson. Petition for Liquor License. To the honorable county court of Gilliam coun ty, Oregon: . Dated at Mayvllle, Or.. Nov. 24. 1897. Chester H. Fortna, Applicant A few days ago Mark Catching, an 18-year-old boy, carelessly shot an eye oat of a railroad man named Leavitt, at Pendleton. In consequence the Pendle ton city council has passed an ordinance prohibiting the nse or sale of air gone in that town. Mr. Leavitt will sue the boy's father for heavy damages. Air guns are too dangerous for any boy to play with. There is some evidence that President McKinley will be more vigorous in his dealings with Spain. The state depart ment has made a demand for $8,000,000 from Spain as indemnity for damages to American interests in Cuba. Since the United States haa not recognized the belligerncy of Cuba each claims are col lectible from Spain. Within the same territory in square miles that London claims to cover, New York, in both New Jersey and York, has about 30,000 more population than Lon don now has, so that New York in real ity is now the greatest city in the world in point of population, and is the only great city that ships can float ap to. The legislature of that state convened there Monday, and Mark Hanna finds that the opposition forces are strong enongh to just defeat him for U. S. sen ator by two or three votes. "And that's what's the matter with Hanna." A goat ate ap the entire funds of Ottawa county, Mich., the other day. The treasurer kept the county money in greenbacks in a kittle under his house and a goat got onto the combination and was only detected when he was endeavor ing to masticate the kettle. ' Jab, v. MOOBB, Register. John W. Backus, of Portland, recently set a good example for worthless hus bands. With his life insured for 5000 he jumped from a siitb story window in order to give his family what he did not have the ability to earn for them. Recently we have noticed that a major ity of the farmers who come to town bring something to sell or exchange for Merchandise. Such is always a sign of thrift, and men who do it are seldom much in debt. Dallas Itemizer. If yon want an elephant you'll have to send in your order at once, as there are only 6000 of them left in the world, and they are going like hot cakes.
