New fork, Oct 35. Russell Sage
oreated a sensation in Wall street lato
yesterday by announcing that he had
been invited by Preaiduut McKlnley to
form a syndicate to bid on the Union
Faciflo railroad on the basis of satisfy
ing the fall government claim in the
Union Pacific Mr. Sago invited sub
scriptions to a plan to be hereafter
brought out by him. The payment ot
the government claim in full is under
stood to be the first condition in this
plan. Mr. Sage's representative an
nounced last nlgh that he had received
subscriptions for over 175,000,000
within two hours of his announcement.
It was said that he would continue to
receive subscriptions until his plan was
subscribed at least three times over.
As to the bond transactions, Mr. Sage
thinks there is unlimited capital avail
able for settlement of the Pacific road
debt without loss to the government.
Among' the subscriptions reported to
Mr. Sage's Union Pacific scheme were
the following:
Mr. Astor's subscription is said to
have been received by cable. So cue of
the names are said to represent other
interests besides the subscribers. It is
said a large insurance company will
subscribe $10,000,000.
Mr. Sage goes to Washington today
to confer with the president and the
attorney-general, at their request
LAUNCH BOILER EXPLODED.
Accident to One of the Boats of the
. Texas.
Boston, Oct. 25. The boiler of one
of the steam launches of the battleship
Texas blew up while it was alongside
the battleship, and a number of men,
including two officers and a surgeon,
were injured, none fatally.
The explosion occurred just as the
launch reached the side of the ship,
having towed down two ship's boats
full of men who were engaged in the
naval parade. On the launch at the
time were 35 men, including Lienten
ant-Commander Delhanty, Lieutenant
Bristol, Ensign Wadhams and Dr. W
R. Dubose, the ship ssnrgeon. The
smokestack, the top of the boiler and
part of the canopy over the boiler were
blown into the air, and what was left
of tbe launch caught fire from the
flame that followed the bursting of the
boiler, but tbe fire had little to burn
In the pit with the boiler John Phil
lips, an oiler, and John Fisher, a coal
pabser, were thrown violently against
the wooden partition. Fisher was
badly injured internally. Ph'llips es
caped with severe bruises. Tbe cox
swain, Thomas Sullivan, was thrown
asainst the side of the launch, but
was only bruised, and the sailor with
bim was completely blackened by soot,
but unhurt Dr. Dubose had two front
teeth knocked out.
BONES WERE MOVED.
Marcus Whitman's (Irsvs at
Mission Opened.

Walla Walla, Wash., Oct. 25. This
afternoon Marcus Whitman's grave, at
Whitman mission, seven miles west of
Walla Walla, was opened, preparatory
to the erection of a mausoleum of brick
and granite thereon by the Whitman
Memorial Association. President Pen
rose, of Whitman college; a few stu
dents and newspaper men only were
present, besides the contractors.
Near the surface of the mound in one
corner, four skulls nearly intact were
discovered; also a number of minor
bones. The skull of Dr. Whitman whs
recognized by Che gold filling in one ot
his teeth and a tomahawk wound at the
base of the skull.
Dr. Whitman, his wife and 11 asso.
ciates, massacred 50 years ago. are eup
posed to be buried in the grave,
The bones were brought to this city
this evening, to be classified by physi
cians. After being placed iii a glass
case for inspection for a few days, they
will be returned to their resting-place,
and the mausoleum of brick and granite
erected over them.
The Yerkes Telescope.
Williams Bay, Wis., Oct. 25.
Charles T. Yerkes' splendid gift is
now in the possession of the university
of Chicago. Shortly after noon, Mr.
Yerkes formally presented to President
W. R. Harper the keys to the obser
vatory which contains the Yerkes tele
scope. Tbe ceremonies covered two
honrs, and the greatest refracting tele
scope in the world, having a 40-inch
lens, is dedicated and ready to be used
by astronomers from every part of the
globe.
Sherwood Depot Burglarized.
Sherwood, Or., Oct. 25. The South
ern Pacific depot at this place was en
tered by burglars Sunday night, and a
box containing about $ 20 in cash and
all the tickets belonging to the office
were taken.
Examination of Captain toverldge.
Chicago, Oct. 25. The officers of
the army constituting the court of in
quiry to examine into the facts connect
ed with the alleged ill-treatment of
Private ' Hammond by Captain Love
ridge, of the Fourth infantry, arrived
at Fort Sheridan today and began the
work of investigation. As the senior
officer of the court, Colonel Simon Sny
der, of the Fifteenth infantry, opened
the proceedings and took charge ol the
examination.

The past week has been a very quiet
tine in the grain trade, with narrow
fluctuations. Europe took 0,800,000
bnshols of our wheat, and from other
sountries about 8,000,000 bushels.
A dispatch to the London Times
Irom Buenos Ayres says that there have
been good rains in the south and a
ilight rainfall In the north, so that the
Harvest is now secure. It is estimated
that 1,000,000 tons of wheat will be
weported.
Broomhall, a commercial authority
it Liverpool, cabled that a special
gent investigated crop conditions in
Kusssia and pronounced the spring
wheat crop in the important southeast
district to yield not over 60 per cent of
lust year.
The teceipts of spring at Minneapo
lis by the flouring mills have been very
large, running as high as 1,100 oars in
one day. The American visible supply
inoreased 1,138,000 buBhols, and now
totals 23,030,000 bushels. A year ago
today the visible increased 2,411,000
bushels and totalled 64,858,000
bushels.
Regarding the fall wheat. Mnoh re
lief in the drought regions has been ex
perienced by quite exteudud rains,
which in many places were fairly lib
eral, and in others less important. The
effect has been to revive cheerfulness
and confidence where the seriousnetts of
drought conditions was having a dis
couraging influence. These rains have
not accomplished all that is needful,
but it they be soon followed by more
moisture there will be much done to
overcome the drawbacks whloh have
been attending autumn seeding opera
tions. It is yet too early to offer an explicit
opinion as to the probable relative area
of autumn sown wheat, but it now
teems practically conclusive that there
will be shown considerable gain over
last year. It is in evidence that Oc
tober sowings of wheat if followed with
ordinary favorable conditions may be
expected to result well, and in fact the
wheat sown as late as the middle ol
November has possibilities favoring a
good yield.
The rains have had the effect to
weaken the market sentiment to some
extent, and wheat values have receded.
Other influences have also had mors
or less bearing in the same direction.
The large foreign demand which served
in an important dogreeito stimulate the
advancing tendency of values some
weeks ago lias been modified, as might
have been expected as a natural result
to follow that abnormal activity.
