THE CQHDOII GLOBE. OREGON STATE tiORMALscHPl v Ifea JAMES W. SMITH LORD & CO., FRIDAY, JULY 23, 1897. THE OFFICIAL PAPER OF GILLIAM COUNTY. OREGON. Here i wither "sure cure" for con autn ptton, from th Providence Journal: "Another class of men who watch sheep are those who do it tor their health. Ifcw-na of men claim to have heen cured of consumption simply by putting in several ttionthK at watc-hing sheep. The Work gives what is moet required in the deadly disease plenty of fresh air, mod erate exercise and employment that is not wearing on the brain, but is etill enough to keep it occupied and prevent nervousness. Of course, if a man has plenty of money he can get these things without herding sheep, hnt there are many men who need them badly who have bo money, and all who have taken advantage of this knowledge have surely been benefited'. A number of men who fcave taken up eheepherding have be come ft) fascinated with it that they have stuck to it long after they got over their rwible." They had a terrible storm back East recently. A Missouri editor wrote about cyclone, saying that it turned a well wrong end op in the state of Mississippi ; turned a cellar upside dowu in Wis consin, moved a township line in Ne braska, blew all the staves ont of a whisky barrel in Iowa amd left nothing but the bnnghole; changed the day of the week in Ohio; blew the hair off of bald headed tian in Texas; blew the mortgage off farm in Michigan ; blew all the cracks out of a fence t Dakota; took all the wind out of a politician in Missouri. A miserable iu poster, gays an eastern exchange, is working his game on some of the neighboring cities, selling from house to house a salve which he guaran tee to core warts. All sensible people knnw that the only way to remove a wart ia to rub it with a raw potato, which is afterwards to be buried by a cross-eyed negro in the northeast corner ef a graveyard at midnight in the dark of the moon. As the potato decays the wart will disappear. This wart salve fat np in tin boxes h a delusion and a snare. Exchange. A, remarable law aimed at foreign im migration went into efTect in Pennsyl vania July 1st. It imposes a tax of three cents a day on all employed unnatural ized foreigners. The tax is to be collect ed from the wages of this class, begin nkttf July It. The bill will put about $100,000 a year into the treasuries of the various counties of the state. Oiie-half goes' to the school fund on the basis of the number of schools, and the balance to the general expenses of the counties. A local poet has jttet had a "spasm" and this ia the result of it: "Into the cow-lot bright and gay, the milkmaid hustles from day to day, and gathers the' lacteal fluid white while the morning aun is yet out of sight. Hot winds may blow, and grasshoppers hop, and the bugs and drouths may do up our crop, bat as long as the stream of milk don't top, the cow and the milkmaid will come out on top." j " 1 a MONMOUTH, OREGON. ' Dfrcs to inform the people of Gilliam county that his business is running on full time at the old stand Union Block, Arlington, Oregon; that the flashy, misleading newspaper advertisements and circular letters that are flooding the country have not affected his trade; baton the contrary, sales nave been increasing. His many old friends and customers realise that no business man will . give away something for nothing. What he loses on the "baits" he will more than doubly make up on the other goods he Bells his customers. Look out for snares. One, ' of our greatest statesmen 40 years ago truthfully said: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fend all of the people all of the time." James W. Smith's immense stock of goods will speak for him. Call and examine the largest stock of goods ever shown in Gilliam county. His stores are loaded from floor to ceiling, and as regards prices he will en deavor to keep in the "procession." Many of the lines are bought direct from the East in large' quantities for cash, which enables him to give his custom ers great inducements to favor him with their patronage. The Wasco Warehouse Co. has wool sacks, fleece twine and sack twine for sale at Arlington1. Notice to Sheepmen.
