A great many have come in to hear the lawyers "s)oiit" in the criminal cases, wiiien is always interesting ami some times proves very interesting to the de fendants. Co., came up from Portland this week to adjust Geo. Hippey's loss from the burning of his store at' Mayville. Mr. Rippey epeaka'ln the highest terms of the fair ness with which he has been treated by the company. The present term of circuit court will likely be the longest that has ever been 'helil in the county,, owing to the large amount of criminal work to dispose of. Judge Bradshaw and Dist. Atty. Wilson, as usual, are rushing matters with all possible vigor, but it is very probable that the session will Install next week yet. Four children from the Boys and Girls Aid Society, of Portland arrived here hist week. Sir. and Mrs. Alexan der of Mckleton, Wash., took two of them, A. A. Jayne and wife one and the other was taken by. someone, whose name we have not learned. They are all intelligent, nice looking children. Mr. Dantphman of Eigbtmile, who claims to have made literal journeys to heaven and hell; to have seen the devil, God, the angels, anukes, etc., is here telling of his trip. Very few intelligent people believe his story; although we hfclieve the man is sincere and that he believes he has seen the things referred to. Most people believe him to be either In boring: under a hallucination of the brain approaching insanity, or that he had the delirium tremens, as hesavs he had been drinking to excess for some time. It is not unusual for men in that condition to imagine they have seen snakes, the devil, etc, One of the most useful nn.I f.ntercsting publication's in the world, foe ladies, is the "Housekeeper," published at Min neapolis, Minn, The subscription price is only .1.00 a year, and it is worth many times that amount. Pepperwell.Matteer, Bucking ham and Chas Huntley all intend to ship some horses to an unknown, dis tant market in the near future. The people here seem to be unanimons of opinion in regard to the selemn duty of the grand and petit juries to rid the comity of professional tbeivee at the present term of court. The gentlemanly and accommodating young man w ho has been carrying the Fossil-Antelope mail has leen snpersed- ed by another, through the intervention of the owers that be. The change does not meet with the approval of our people. The John Day river was higher last week than ever Is-fore and all the river settlers are sufferers to some extent, es pecially Wm. Griffiths and Johnny Clurno, the former losing his fence and aliout 1"0 tons of hay. His family had to be removed by the steamer Queen. All grain growing upon low ground is ruined. We learn that the settlers fur ther down the river have been damaged even more than the people of this see tion, J. E. David and Joe. Sanders being HiiioiiK,tlie heaviest losers. This is the season of springand already in this glorious climate the fruit trees are laden with blossoms whose scented perfumes are wafted with every gentle breeze.
