Press Paragraphs Arthur Douglas spent Tuesday in Walla Walla. G. M. Morrison, Adams farmer, was in Athena Monday. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lee of Couse Creek, May 8, 1927, a son. C. W. Avery and Jim King of Weston were visitors here Monday. Jim Thillips of Pendleton wa3 a business caller in Athena,, Tuesday. Lee Beckner, formerly of Athena, now of lone, visited friends here Sat urday. Mrs. Henry Dell and Mrs. E. C. Prestbye spent Tuesday in Walla Walla. Glen Bean prominent Walla Walla attorney was an Athena visitor Wed nesday. Miss Ruth Proebstel of Walla Wal la visited Athena friends Wednesday evening. John Stanton has returned from a sheep shearing trip irt the vicinity of Heppner. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Singer and sons spent Sunday with relatives at Waitsburg. Dr. Fred Lieuallen of Bend, Ore gon, has been in Adams this week, visiting relatives. The parking at the Baptist church is being filled and leveled and sown to lawn this week. W. H. Morrison, prominent real estate dealer of Pendleton, was in Atheim Wednesday. Mrs. Goldie Bacon of Vancouver, Washington, was in Athena this week, visiting friends. Dick Bush has been in Athena this week visiting at the home of his mother, Mrs. Theo Bush. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kidder of Weston Mountain spent Monday night at the F. L. Pittman home here. The piano pupils of Miss Edna Hanna, of the Malen Burnett school of music of Walla Walla will be heard in recital at the Athena high school auditorium, Thursday evening at 8 o'clock, May 19. Miss Hanna will bring with her a pianist and a reader. Miss Ruth Doty of "Portland who spent the week end as the guest of Mrs. Glenn Dudley, has returned home. Mr. and Mrs E.'M. Bollinger and Mr. and Mrs. Davidson of Milton, motored to Pullman and Lewiston, Sunday. Dr. Keylor of Walla Walla was here Monday, being called in con sultation in the case of Mrs. John Walker. The Jolly Twenty-five club met Wednesday afternoon in the Park where they enjoyed an outing and picnic lunch. There will be no services at the Baptist church Sunday, on account of the Umatilla Baptist association at Hermiston. F. E. Erickson superintendent, and W. F. Hurd division manager of the Continental Oil company were in Athena Saturday. Mrs. Lawrence Pinkerton is at Col lege Place where she is receiving medical treatment and expects to be there about three weeks. Mrs. Henry Koepke Jr., and Misi Thelma Thompson motored to Dayton Wednesday where they spent the day as guests of Miss Helen Broughton Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Dudley spent Wednesday at Bingham Springs, and returned with a big catch of trout. Mr. and Mrs Elmer Stockstill left for Seattle Monday in respons-i to a message announcing the critical ' ill ness of Mrs. Stockstill's father, Mr. Finch. Mr. and Mrs. Olin Hadley, Mrs. Hadley Sr., and Roland Hadley were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Betts Wednesday evening. Plumbers have completed the fit tings in the new residence of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Watts, and a try-out was given the oil-fed furnace. It worked satisfactorily. Painters are bringing their work to a close, and the hardwood floors are being laid and filling of the lawn is now in pro gress. Dean Dudley is making his annual visit at Switzlers on the Columbia River this week. He was accompan ied by Bryce Baker and Walter Boni fer of Gibbonr W. S. Ferguson, Bert Logsdon Mose Banister, Lorairr-Shick, A. W Douglas and Lloyd Michener attend ed the wrestling match in Pendleton Monday evening. E. H. Leonard, D. P. Hayes and Mr. Atkinson were here Wednesday in the interest of the twentieth an nal race meeting to be held in Waits burg May 27-28. With the. closing of school, M. I Miller, teacher of the eighth grade with his family will go to Endicott Washington, where they will spend the summer on a ranch. A new steel air compressor lank was installed at the Thompson Gar age this week. The new tank weighs over 400 pounds and is made to withstand high pressure. Mrs. Minnie DePeatt left last Thursday for Everett, Washington, where she will visit at the home of Rev. and Mrs. 0. D. Harris, the lat ter her daughter, for several weeks. Dr. Sharp is home, having return ed from the hospital at Walla Walla, Monday evening, where he went to receive treatment for a hemorrhage He is able to look after his practice as usual. Ralph McEwen reports a good crop of rattle snakes at his Pine creek ranch. He has killed one or two a day and says they are big ones, some of them having as many as nine rattles. A number of Athena men are em ployed at Adams in the construction of Frank Curl's new grain elevator, The Adams structure is some larger than the one built by the Farmers Grain Elevator in Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pendleton of Lakeview, Oregon, are visiting with relatives in Athena and Pendleton, Mrs. Pendleton was formerly Miss Grace Zerba and is a sister of Forrest Zerba of. this city. H. 0. Worthington is here from Pendleton painting and repapering the Lockwood residence. Mr. Worth ington, who was formerly engaged in automobile painting, is now employed by Lee McAtee of Pendleton. Mrs. Earl Martin and Mrs. Ella Martin motored to Walla Walla Tuesday. Mrs. Ella Martin was mat in Walla Walla by Mr. and Mrs. George Luck and she will go to their home near Touchet for a visit. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Huggins visited over the week end at the homo of Mr. and Mrs. Riley Burden near Lowden. Sunday they returned home accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Burden who spent the day with them. The courts of the Athena Tennis club on upper Main street have been put in condition for the season's play. Players are practicing daily and probably games will later be scheduled with clubs of other towns, Rcbekah lodge met Tuesday even ing. Word comes from the state game and fish commission that the follow ing closed streams in Umatilla coun ty, have been opened for trout fish ing: The north and south forks of McKay creek, Umatilla river and Meacham creek. - . "The Unknown Soldier" will be presented at the Standard tomorrow night. Sunday night "Her Husband's Secret" is on the program, and the mid-week photoplay for Wednesday night will be "The Eagle," starring Rudolph Valentino and Vilma Banky. Word has been received from Miss Dorothy Koepke that she will meet her parents upon their arrival in Germany and accompany them on their trip to Switzerland, France, England and Italy. Mr. and vMrs. Koepke are now en route to Europe. - Miss Jennamae Read and Miss Lois Johnson appeared on the program given for the graduating nurses of St. Mary's hospital at Walla Walla last evening at which time eight nurses were given certificates. Miss Read who sang was: accompanied on the piano by Miss Johnson. Mrs. Levi Westfall, (Zeena Craft) of Heppner, with her little daughter drove up Sunday morning and was a guest at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.'T. Smith. Mrs. Westfall is a successful professional Tfurse, and at present has the man agement of the Heppner hospital un der her charge i High School Notes Miss Terry's room had their break fasts out along, the Wild Horse re cently. They transported their eats by means of a small wagon. About eighty people went on the grade picnic to Bingham Springs last Saturday. Mr. Hadley will again have charge of correcting the state eighth grade examinations in this county. Mr. Miller and Miss Rodman are to as sist. Other school people from over the county will work on these papers. The work will take about a week. . The high school teachers presented the graduating class with autograph registers. A state survey is being made in spelling. Lists of spelling words were used by the Athena grades, the senior class, and the faculty. The teachers were entertained at a reception given by the Christian church Monday evening. Mr. Hadleys mother, Mrs. A. A. Hadley of Portland, is spending a week in Athena enroute to Twin Falls, Idaho, where she expects to visit a sister. Mr. M. I. Miller is to act as ranch foreman on his brother's farm near Endicott, Washington, this summer. He and his family expect to leave Athena about May 21. Miss Cornelison and Miss Bateman accompanied the Etude club td Wal la Walla Tuesday afternoon. The school tennis tcajns composed of La Vone Pittman, Ethel Pittman, Dorothy Geissel, Dorsey Kretzer, Arthur Taylor and Fred Radtke went to Helix to play tennis Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Stolzheise accompan ied them. The graduating class had charge of the last assembly of the year, and was declared one of the best of the semester. The. first number was an introduction of each member of the class by President Fred Radtke. He gave their middle names also their nicknames. C Senator Norris, republican, Nebraska, announced that tie planned to retire from the senate at the expiration of his present term. The Nebraska senator, who has held public otOce lor the last SO years declared he chose to round out his life in the service of his state, and plans to announce as a candidate for governor when senatorial term ends in March, 1931. , .
