ORE.. DEC. 8.. ,1911 BLARNEYJASTLE. The Press ia in reoeipt of a letter from A. Bi MoEwen. who with bis daughter, Jessica, is touring Europe. Wbeo the letter was written, Mr. Mo- Ewea was ia Cork, Ireland. Be an closes the following historical and legendary information relative to tbe famous Blarney Castle, whiob we are pleased to publish. Mr. MoEwen says "I have read different iocorraot ver fious ot the story, tat I know this tu be correct, for 1 have beeu there and kissed the Blarney stone, myself:" This castle, famous in sods and story, is situated on an isolated rook of limestone, and is the third oastle oooapyiug the site. Tbe first was a banting post of Dermot McCarthy, Kicg of Sooth Mauster, and was built of timber. Tbe second was boilt in the year 1200. Tbe third was built in the 15tb century. Blarney Castle was Jong tbe resi dence of tbe younger branob of the princely raoe of the MoCartbys, Lords of Mnskerry, Barons of Blarney, and Earls of Clapoarthy. In tbe reign of Queen Elizabeth it wan tbe strongest fortress in Monster; almost strong euoogb to warrant tbe conjecture that before tbe introduc tion of gunpowder il most have been impregnable. . It was treaoberoosly taken by Lord Brogblll in 1640, and tbe reigning King William demolished all tbe for tiOoflUous, leaving only the tower stanofug. The castle oousists of tbe massive and imposing donjon tower, 120 feet in height, and a lower portion, which is less substantial. Tbe keep and tbe donjons were built after tbe battle of Bannookborn. Cromwell, Ireton and Fairfax bent their artillery against It, and made a break in its battle ments. ' . DonHgb McCarthy was summoned (o Parliament in tbe reign of Queen .Elizabeth by the title of Baron of Blurney, and Charles II., in J658, con ferred tbe title of Earl of Clancartby on the bead of tbe family. Tbe last cf tbe family of Clanoartby was dispossessed after tbe seige of Limerick, and tbe estate, whlob com prised all Moskerry, was forfeited to tbe Crown for the Earl's aabereuoe to - tbe uufoitouate Stuarts. Tbe giouudwork of tbe well-known and charming drama "Ct'anoarty," wbiob some years ago took London by storm, informed from this incident of the roin of the MoCartbys. In 1692 the forfeited landa were sold to a London company, and 0,000 aores in and around the parish of Blaruey was allotted to a member of the com pany. The castle was then purobased in 1701 by James JeifrieB, who teoame Governor of Cork. He ereoted a large and handsome boose in front of it, wbiob was the family residence for many years. At what time the "Blarney Stoue" obtained Its reputation it is bard to discover. One legeud Is that tbe then possessor ot Blarney Castle, Lord Clan cartby, when a prisoner to Sir George Carew, was required to surrender bis Castle to tbe soldiers of Queen Eliza beth as a proof of his loyalty, and though protesting bis willingness to do so, always evaded by some plausi- ble exouse. Henoe the term 'Blar ney" for a plausible touguo. Another etory is that Cormao MoCartliy a des cendant of tbe Kiugs of Monster, cbanoed ono day to save an old woman from drowning in tbe lakd. Sbe told him to mount tbe keep and kiss a oor tain stoue in tbe wall and be would be endowed wltb a golden tongue, wbiob would influence man or woman, friend or foe, as he pleased. Tbe visitor who for tbe first time makes tbe pilgrlmagi) iuteut only on reaobing tbe talismanio and elo qoenoe-imparting stone, takes little heed of the eoenio lovellnesES of the plnoe. lit stops not bis course ontil he is at tbe top of tbe oastle. In sea son and out of season, the Castle ap pears to be much frequented, and tbe newoomor can nearly always count on tbt assistance of many willing and Bturdy arms to bear bim op whilst head downward be applies bia lips to the magio spot on tbe outer wall in dicated to bim. The osoulatiog cer emony ouoe orer, "TIb he may clam ber to a lady's chamber, or become a member of sweet Parliament." The third aud most pleasiug legend is as follows; When a year's tiooe was made betweeu Robert Brooe and Edward II., peudiug tbe surrender of Stirling Caslls, Edward Broce, when taking refuge from tbe Euglish, came to Cormao MoCartby, King of Mon ster, and asked for bis help. Cormao gave bim 5,000 keros. who went over to Scotland and fought at Bannock turn, and tbeu Brooe sent bim, as return for bis assistance, a piece of the old stoue ot Sooue (wbiob tbey had removed from Ireland) to be pot iu tbe uew keep whiubCormto intend ed adding to tbe Norm'an Castle boilt io'lSOO. - Blarney . is pre-emiuently a faity dell a regioo of enchantment. Tbe whole place fairly .bristles with leg end, tradition, song aud story, and one ooold spend boors, aud even days listening to the tales ot the wonderful things done by supernatural or super buruao ageuoiea ia tbe distriot, bat epaoe will not permit the details. The top of Blarney Caslle commands a fine and almost limitless vif over a rich nndulatiug tftot of conn try, in tersected by the rivers Comane, Blar ney and Sbournagb, bounded on the northwest by tbe lofty obain of tbe Boggra Mountains. Close to tbe oas tle are a number of natural oaves, one of whioh was oonverted into a dun geon by sonae early proprietor. It was entered by a strong door and was light ed by a single window, and several massive rings still remain attaobed to tbe walls. Stalaotites and stalag mites are found in these oaves. In tbe piotoresqoe grounds attached to tbe castle are rostio seats and Denooes wnere tne tired visitor may rest himself and drink in tbe beauty and romanoe of tbe surroondiugs. A wais 10 ciarney unne, a quarter 61 a mile distant, may be taken. Tbe way to this piotnresque sheet of water ia through an umbrageous wood. In spring and summer tbe ground beneath tbe trees is carpeted with bluebells, primroses and many favorite wild flowers. As Irish people olaim that Jeremiah tbe Prophet brought this "Jaoob's Pillow" and set it. up on Tara Bill, tbe "Blarney Stone" may indeed be said to be famous. Tbe present proprietor, Sir George Colthorst, is desoended from Sir James Jeffries. By bis kind permis ion visitors are allowed into tbe grounds during tbe year. Black Eggs. The black Cayuga duck, a Soath American bird, frequently lays black eggs. The coloring does not penetrate the shell, being due to an oily pigment which can be rubbed off. The accompanying cut shows an attachment for the hoe drill which overcomes this difficulty. The Akers Hoe attachment regulates the depth of sowing, packs the soil around the grain and insures the grain to be perfectly covered.
