ORE.. NOV. 20 1908 The Bucoesa of the republican party in the presidential eleotion leads the trnat magnates and tbeir benobmen ont of cover, as is attested by bold statements made recently. Steel mag nate Sohwab beld bis special train over time tbe otber night in San Francisco, tbat be might make an ad dress. He made tbe address all right and in it he said that trusts bad come to stay; tbat be favored them (of course every one knows tbat be does) and be oiled over his allegiance to competition destroying monopoly with hit sugar coated pill made palat able in these words' "I believe in trusts for they insure high wages; I believe in high wages, bnt I exact hard work in retain." Schwab's avowel bad hardly got cold on tbe associated press wires, when tbe tole graph lines pnlsated to the fonr corners of tbe earth tbe oro'akings of au after dinuer effort of tbat old fossilized po litioal parasite, Cbannoy M. DePew, who went to tbe United States Senate by vlrtne of tbe plumpness uf bis money bags. This anoient product of graft finds fault with Oregon's pri mary election law and her method of choosing United States Senators by popular vote of tbe people. He dubs it "tbe new idea" and sarcastically cites tbe choice of Chamberlain as being "the first illustration we have of tbe practical workings of the new idea." Well, DePew is a dead one, and for that reason the "new idea" will never have aobanoeto cleanse tbe politioal pot by mopping him in defeat, but it has been promulgated by tbe people of Oregon and tbe promulga tion will be followed by otber states for tbe purposn of sending to the poli tioal scrap heap just such coin-veneered statesmen as Cbaunoy proved to be. Also bia messmate, Claik of Montana. Here, we find a pair of Statesmen to be proud of, indeed. Tbey are tbe brand, labeled iu gilt, tbat for years dominated the Sonate; tbe inner oirole of tbe aristooratio set, a group of gout bonnmbed politioal seedlings tbat are easy game for tbe machinations of the greedy "captains of iudustry" of the Schwab ilk. But Roosovolt baa prom ised tbat Taft will givo tbe country the same "square deal" that bo gave it, and it may be tbat Messrs. Schwab and DePew are just a little previous iu elating tbrongh the medium of lung expansion. road leading from tbe northeastern boundary line of Umatilla oounty down to Portland, thence through tbe Willamette valley to Asbland. Wash ingtcn, or Walla Walla county, at least, is evincing mncb interest in the proposition, aud stands ready to co operate in tbe work. A state road, built on proper grade and macada mized, touching Freewater, Milton, Weston, Athena, Adams, Pendleton, Echo, Dermis too, and Irrigon would look good to every body including tbe buzz wagon owner who by tbe way should not be overlooked when tbe equalization of tbe new toad tax prob lem confronts tbe legislature at its ap proaching session. It is no disparagement of tbe Queen of Portugal, a woman of sterling qualities as tbe wearer of a crown, to suggest that her fearlessness and spirit of self-sacrifice in tbe face of peril have almost innumerable parallels in the unwritten annals of tbe bumble and obscure. The mother of royal station who wonld shield her son from the rifle of tbe assassin commands, very properly, tbe admiration of men and women in all walks of life. Tbe mother who endures grinding poverty in order tbat she may give ber child ren tbe advantage of education, wbo nurses them through tbe most danger ous forms of disease, putting ber own life in jeopardy thereby, is eauallv worthy of reverenoe and praise. It is gratifying to know tbat the world abounds in women of tbis type. If this were not tbe oase, our civiliza tion would rest upon an unstable foundation. Charles M. Sohwab has sbooked ' London by wearing a top bat with a ' short coat, but we are assured tbat be has never appeared anywhere with tan shoes and a clawhammer. tirantland Rice sings: "If ever I should write a book, I'd make my heroine a cook." Huston Post. Graatlaod will of necessity have a policeman for a hero if tbey are to marry in tbe last chapter. In his latest description of tbe war between tbe United States and Japan, Captain Hobson generously refrains from getting us licked. A congressman who has talked him self into Conrgess quite naturally feels tbat he must do a lot of talking after be gets tbere. ClhsimlbeosilE Over 7,000 people committed suicide in Prussia last year. Evidently tbe gospel of hope is muoh needed in tbat oountry. A Pennsylvania girl recently oongbed up a safety pin. Tbey are tbe only kind tbat should be swal lowed. Another crisis is feared in Portugal Tbe young King insists on paying bis father's debts. THE DANGER IN PROMOTION. Q This is the season of tbe year when the largest volume of trade is oarried on in merchandising lines. To meet tbe wants of tbe people of tbis section, Atbena merchants seem to have vied eaob with the otber in providing ex ceptionally large aud well selected stooks of goods of all lines to satisfy tbe demands tbat are now being made. There is a notable briskness of trade iu all branches of business here. Money appears to be plentiful, farm produce of all kinds is brinsing fairly 'cood prioes in foot every thing seems to be on the mend exoept tbe hen; Atbeua is eating Iowa eggs. Brother Greer advises the boys on tbe demooratio papers "to be fair." He wants them to "oalm down" lay dead, so to speak, while with a real peppery pen ho covertly thrusts tbe harpoon hither aud you. "But good fellows," every blasted, bloomin' one of 'em, is a favorite phrase tbe sly old duffer uses as a frill to a partionlalrly acrid and stinging roast: a roast bot enough to melt the door knobs of Sat an's asbestos brown stone front. Boys, sic Tige right back at bim; is our say. On Saturday. November 28, a good roads convention will be beld in Athena. The geueral movement for better highways is one iu wb oh almost every one is, or should be interested. Every dollar tbat property is taxed to further a better oonditiou of publia highways, is mouey well spent Let all givo the date of tbe meetiug here as mnob publioity as possible, so that there will be a large attendance. Tuo good roads movement is state wide more than that, it reaobes interstate proportions. There is talk of a state A New York paper asserts tbat Mrs. Hetty Green is known in Hobokeu, where she oocupies an expensive $10 a mouth apartment, as "Miss Warring ton." It is one of Mrs. Hetty's un doubted rights to live and travel iu cognito if she obooses and probably it doesn't oost an extra cent to do it. Mr. Edison says bis euocess is due to 2 per cent'genius and 98 per cent bard work. Aud yet some men wbo think they are endowed with 03 per cent genius and do 2 per oent hard work wouder why they get only $3 a day. Politics not only makes strange bed fellows, but it generally leads to a quarrel as to wbo should have the middle of tbe bed. Mr. Runyan, who studied law iu tbe night school with Seoretary Cortelyon and wbo bas a newspaper man's ao quaintanoe with Washington, says: 'Yon know, as a matter of fact, neither Hitcboook nor Cortelyou bas tbe executive ability credited to them. Roosevelt has been the chairman of the national republican oomroittee in tbe last two campaigns. He's the best politician iu America and bo's got sense." If tbe judgment of others wbo know the men may be taken as corroborative this view of both Cortelyou and Hitch cock seems to be amply warranted. It would be remarkable in a way if it were not true that both are out classed by men of tbe president's wide training. Cortelyon began as steno grapher to Cleveland, and has been in the departments ever since. Hitcboook graduated at Harvard and at once got a job in the department of agrioulture, and has been in the government employ ever since. Both are expert department men. But tbat sort of training has never before fitted men for great re sponsibilities. It is a mistake to enoourage tbe idea tbat snob men are oapable of assum ing the larger responsibilities of gov ernment. For if tbat idea beoomes once popularized every department of government will get into the hands of men whose talent is essentially cleri cal. The detail work of every depart ment must be in the civil service. But the originating mind of tbe men of wide acquaintance with men and affairs cau not safely be dispensed with in laying ont the work. Tbis danger is suggested in tbe de partment of agrionlture, where Mr. Pinobot is said to be slated to succeed Seoretary Wilson, when tbe latter re tires. In Secretary Wilson tbe de partment bas au organizer wbo kuows American life, a man of experience, a judge of otber men, au all-around man. Mr. Pinobot, on the other band, is a faddist on trees, man of routine, a man wbo would have almost none of Secretary Wilson's initiative, because ho has almost none of Seoretary Wil son's acquaintance with the people, with the aims and wants. Des Moines Register aud Leader. DROPS THE COMIC SUPPLEMENT The Boston Herald has abandoned its oomio supplement on the ground tbat "oomio supplements have ceased to be oomio," that they laok any sem blance of art, tbeir coloring is neces sarily tawdry, and tbe ideas tbey con vey are not elevating. The New York Post and other influential papers ap plaud the aotion. As might be expeoted, the art editors of papers which have exploited tbe "Sunday oomio" rally to its defense. It is notioeable, however, that they hasten to guard their reputation as art editors by explaining tbeir own dis taste for the oolored snpplemnet, say ing it is not for them tbat it is pub lished bat for children who need picture stories and for grownups "with crippled eduoational opportunities." There is muoh to be said on both sides of the question, because tbe supplements are usually uneven in quality. Tbey mingle good and in different cartoons with some tbat are of exceedingly doubtful moral value. High-class contributors deteriorate nudor pressure of work, and sometimes it is bard to find enough really funny things in a hurry to fill tbe sheets. Even tbe humorists are subject to brainfag. Many peopln throw tho supplements away without a glance, and iu some homes of refinement tbe oolored sec tions are carefully kept from the children. Tbere is plenty of room for improvement and the remedy wonld seem to lie in raising the stau dard rather than in total elimination of this feature, for there are many readers of the daily papers wbo can not afford to buy the comic weeklies for their families. Moreover, tbe week lies are not for obildreo and the news papers have the chance to furnish eomethiug really good in the juvenile line. Hew is an opportunity for the art editors wbo have acknowledged tbeir repsonsibility for tbe comics. A few square feet of epaoe might be (.aorifioed for the sake of better quality. -Spofeo8Man-Keview. emetic TO WILL CURE Yotir Cold Try It The uniform success that has attended the use of this remedy in the cure of bad colds has made it one of the most popular medicines in use.
