Fifteen years ago, in Wolf Creek, southern Oregon, two men were in love with the same gitl. One of tbem was the assistant postmaster. The other lived out of town. With this latter one says the Oregon Daily Jour ual, the girl corresponded. Letters passed baok aud foitb for some time, until one day a letter ad dressed to the yonug woman got no farther than the Wolf Creek postoffioe. It was from the ont-of town man, far away. That letter was intercepted by the assistant postmaster. The man never wrote again. He thought that the girl had thrown him down. And all be asked was forgiveness. This wns years afterward, bo said, just iecoutly, in fact. Aud be said that she had forgiven him. OREGON MEN MAT FISH NOW Recent Legislation Temporarily Set Aside By Federal Injunction. Until tbe federal courts finally de termine whether tbe state of Oregon has or bas not the right to euaot legis lation governing tbe waters of tbe Columbia liver from bauk to bank and to enforce these laws, anyone who was permitted to flab in these waters under the law as it stood previously to June 1 last may pursue tbeir occu pation uumolested. This is the effect of an injunction grauted in tbe matter of tbe state of Washington against tbe fish warden of this state. Oregon fish ermen .intervening, asked that tbe in junction wbiob was recently granted restraiuius tbe Oregon authorities from interfering with Washington fishermen in tbe Columbia river be extended so as to permit Oregon fisnbermen tbe same privilege. It was contended by tbe Oregon fishermen that as the mat tor stood Washington fishermen could oo mo over into Oregon waters and take fish unmolested by the Oregon author ities, whereas tbe Oregon fishermen were prohibited from fishing on either side of the river. United States Dis trict Judge Charles E. Wolverton. took tbe same view that tbe Oregon fisher men did and enlarged tbe soope of tbe injunction as requested. From now until toe supreme court of tbe United States decides the "Chris Nielson" case, tbe same laws will govern the actions of the Oregon au thorities that did before the people under the initiative and referendum law, last June enacted tbe acts which are at tbe bottom of the controversy between tbe states of Oregon and Washington over the jurisdiction of the Columbia river. B SEDGES I ENFORCING BLUE UW. FARCE Oregon's Antiquated .Sunday Statute is Dusted off and Tried Out. Fifty store and shop keepers, repre senting practically every class of busi ness except saloons, were plaoed under arrcjt at Portland, Sunday in an effort to p-it into effect a blue law wbiob bas been resting in undisturbed peace on the statute books of tbe state since it was enaoted some 50 years ago. Tbe storekeepers gave hail in tbe sum of $50 eaob and returned to tbe peace ful pursuit of tbeir business. No at tempt was made, aud it is understood uone will bo made to euforce actual closing of stores nntil tbe constitution ality of tbe entire act is tested. ' The law under wbiob tbe arrests were made was passed by tbe legisla ture in 1864 and makes it unlawful to oonduot on Sunday any class of busi ness except drug shops, liverv stables, bakeries and butcher shops. Until a week ago, there is do record of its ever having been utilized exoept for forcing tbe provision against "dram shops and tippling places" Last Sunday District Attorney George J. Cameron called the atten tion of Chief of Police Charles Gritz macher to tbe statute, and suggested that it be enforced against pool and billiard rooms and cigar stands, in or der to put a stop to the insulting of women by the hangers-on of these places. 'Chief Gritzmacher announced that if the statute was to be enforced against one class would enforce it against all, and to this tbe district attorney agreed.
