ABLE CATERERS TO THE PUBLIC IN GOOD THINGS TO EAT A SIA1E COIIIIE Threshermen to Organize For Preren tion of Unfair Competition and Other Evils. - PaoiQo coast managers of the leading machine manufacturers of the United States met in Portland Saturday night and after a banquet whioh was largely attended formed tbe Oregon . State ThreBhermen'a association. Tbe ob ject of tbe meeting was to form an organization wbiob will be turned over to tbe tbresbermea of tbe state next May following a ooavention of farmeri. in Portland from all parts of tbe state. ; Tbe new association is similar to those of nearly every other grain growing state in tbe union and baa for its purpose the prevention of no fair competition on the part of uu sornpnlons operators, tbe betterment of tbe roads and bridges of tbe state and tbe regulating of freight rates on threshing machines and supplies. -Phil S. Bate j, editor of tbe Pacific Northwest, is the father of tbe move ment tc lorm tbe threshermen's asso ciation. In explaining what is meant by unfair competition be said: "There has been a tendency on tbe part of oertaiu itinerant harvesters of late years to bny a threshing outfit by tbe payment of a small sum of, money in advance and a note on long time. They then go into the field and cut rates- to seonre business.,.. Tbey can do this to tbe detriment of honest ma chine men because they do not intend to pay for tbe machinery which tbey have obtained on credit. They run tbe season through, clean up 'all the money tbey oan and then skip out after repudiating their notes. -' ."One of tbe main objects 1 of tbe association is to proteot threshermen against such bunko artists as these. "Another object of tbe organization is to secure fair rates from the rail roads. As long as the threshermen are soattered and individuals only they oanuot say to tbe railroads what shall be a fair obarge for tbe transportation of maohihery but with a united effort much oan be accomplished. "We also are able to secure - better roada and bridges from ' tbe'sfate hi making it responsible for loss of life or damage to maobinery by reason of defective bridges or dangerous stretch es of roadway. "We expeot to oall a convention of threshermen some time next spring, probably in May, that will bring at least 8,000 delegates to tbe oity Spec ial rates will be granted by all tbe railroads for those desiring to f attend tbe convention and the maobinery men of Portland will arrange a program of sports and amusements for the .benefit of the visitors. I, "At tbe business meeting tbe or ganization will be transferred to tbe thresnermen themselves and a new set of officers elected by tbem." ' The State Fair. Mr. and Mrs. Win. Pinkerton Jr. and A. L. Swaggart were among those of this oonnty who attended tbe State Fair at Salem last week. Tbe unanimous verdict is that tbe fair just brought to a close was tbe greatest ever held in tbe history of tbe state. Tbe livestook, hortioultnral and agri cultural exhibits were tbe finest ever exhibited in the northwest. Tbe rao ing was superb and some of the fast est horses in tbe west participated in tbe speed ooutests. The attendance was large, as many as 20,000 people attending daily. The Deadly "22." 1 That one of these little "22" calibre squirrel rifles is a deadly, vicious weapon, baa been proven times galore, bnt an incident of recent date brings tbe fact still more forcibly to mind. Saturday George Mulkey and Jobn Thompson looated three bear near the Thompson ranob on tbe Umatilla. Mr. Thompson equipped with a 30-80 Tiff Athena, Oregon and George with a "22" special went after tbem. Mulkey rode into tbe brush to scare brnin ont Thompson's way. But Mrs. Brnin did not soare. Instead, she stood np and faced George while bet two cubs soampered away. Mnlkey drew bead on tbe big, tbiok neok and pulled tbe trigger. Tbe bear dropped stone dead in her tracks and when skinned, tbe little bullet was found lodged against the hide at the back of the neok, having penetrated and broken the neck. Filed on Timber Land. Aast week Henry Dell made a trip into tbe oountry tributary to tbe north fork of tbe Jobn Day in company with Tom Keller, timber cruiser. Mr. Dell filed on a timber claim. Mncb of tbe timber land in tbat seotion baj beeu taken np, but there yet remains choice olaims, wbiob are isolated from tbe big traots. Trade at Home. Atbena stores are reoeiving tbeir stocks of fall goods and without doubt tbeir patrons will get the best tbe market affords.. Few towns are as fortunate as Atbena in having np to date mercantile firms and there is no reason for going or sending away for ?our goods or giving catalogue bouses any euconragement whatever. Burglar Grant Sentenced. George Grant, tbe burglar wbo robbed a jewelry store and tbe Mc Ewen hardware store in this oity, pleaded guilty to tbe obarge and was sentenced to two years in tbe peniten tiary by Jndge Bean. Grant was cap tured at North Yakima on desoription sent out by local officers. WESTON HAS A CONFLAGRATION j Chance to Fumigate the Colonel Lost Through Sheer Thoughtlessness. Yes, Susie, it again transpires. Away back in tbe beginning: If all tbe buildings tbat have been built in tbe town of Weston were standiug to day, Weston wonld be a dingdad tig place, But. Tbe red-winged fire fiend has vented his destructive wrath there time and again and only for in domitable pluck and enterprise on the part of property owners, there would be no town there. . . "Nonplussed and chagrined seeming ly at its failure to devastate tbe arch itectural works of man iu tbe Normal town, tbe fire dragon must fasteu its tentaoles npon man himself. And here is where tbe Westou fire department, through inactivity or sheer tbougbtlessness, lost its cbauoe to fumigate Wood with' tbe chemical engine; earn tbe gratitude of a pleasant-odor-loving community and smash a world's record to smithereens. Yes, Susie dear. Tbe colonel was accosted by a yonng lady wbo desired to subscribe for "tbe best paper in Weston." Wood was puffing at a toll of tobaooo, tbe smell of wbiob was tbe faosimile odor of a snawstaok burning down deep, next tbe ground wben tbe straw is damp from a seapon's moisture. Bnt, Susie, there was another smell coming. Would you believe it dear? Tbe colonel, (bashful anyway, dad rat bim) was so bnmfoozled at tbe mere incident of being seen talking to a comely maiden that be shoved his vile oigar into his pooket, striving iu tbe meantime to looate penoil and note book. "Name, please," said Wood. "Horrors I" sniffed tbe lady, plung ing htr bandkerohief to ber nose. "Beg pardon," gushed tbe colonel. "Ob! Pot it ont!" "Your name " ; "Jump into tbe fonntain. Oh, that will surely quench it,' exoitedly ex- olaimed the demnre miss. "Ob! Miss Fonutain; six months or a year six months, 75 cents; year, 11.60." "Fire! Fire!!" shrieked tbe girl. At this stage of the amusing dia logue, a soft spot on tbe colonel's anatomy beoame exceedingly warm and be suddenly tumbled to the fact tbat tbe lighted cigar bad ignited bis clothing. A small boy was apprehended in the act of ringing the Ore bell, (the man wbo stopped tbe boy should be shot) while Wood plunged into bim Culley'a store where timely applica tion of water from a garden bose sub dued Weston's latest conflagration.
