ORE.. OCT. 2. 1908 LEMONS FOR WOOD. . From the toue of Editor Woods' last, we conclude that be has again keen at the receiving end of a lenaou delivery. Not so very long ago be was lifted to the dizzy heights of public notice by a prohibition orator, who drew a vivid word picture of the colonel's short comings, publicly proclaimed him to be a loiterer at the shrine of Baocbas in fact directed him as a juicy sub ject for a sound, logical temperanoe serruou, and it is said all frills were in cluded iu the picture. Instead of con siderately sinking out of sight for a few days, the egotistical ignoramus flaunted his despised personality before the populace until bis position struck the publio mind with a disgust like unto tbat of the individual who sits down on a big, mushy, fat caterpillar. Time, the great leveler of incidents, bud scarcely effaced the prohibition episode, when the colonel is again ushered forth into the limelight. This time it's a Free Methodist preacher, named Denny, and there is nothing left of Wood sans egotism, even. The doughty minister of the gospel left nothing unsaid. He effectually punc tured tbe Weston editor's tarnished leopard spots, and laid bare before tbe eyes of bis audienoe the grilling truth in all its glowing force of fact. He demonstrated to tb satisfaction of all, the evil effects occurring" from 200 pouuds of oppression iu any community tbe size of Weston. Tbe Rev. Douny is a farseeing man and he struck straight from the shoulder at a social obstrnotiou that lias long beou tbe righteous cause for attack iu the columns of the Press. For tbe good ot Weston, we siuoerelW hope tbat she has wised up to existing conditions and tbat ere this, Wood has beou either riddou out or town ou u rail, or hr s sought tbe seclusion of bis Uardena ranch, where only snnd toads nud ground squirrels will tin burdened with bis obnoxious presouoe. In recording a recent incident at Weston, under tbe above bead, the Weston Leader pertinently says: "It doesn't often huppeu at Weston now. bat the other night during tbe progress of a danoe certain young men of this town were noticeably affected by some bottled disturbance seemingly imported for tbe occasion. Next morning tbe empty bottles lying about tbe street gave mute evidence of tbe potency of their jag. This sort of thing is decidedly out of date at Wes ton now, -wbicb fact tbey would do well to bear in mind. To get drunk is no longer regarded as tbe outward, sign of inherent manliness. ' Quite the contrary. A "drunk" is simply look ed upou us u publio nuisance, whose behavior indicates bis ooutempt for tbe opinions of others and bis reckless disregard of bis owu good name. Yonng fellows who feel that tbey must get soused now aud then, would better amble aoross tbe line, accumulate and dispose of their jag. aud then come baok sober. To beoome the hilarious assooiate of John Barleyoorn in this community excites its contempt and derision together with a certain pity for tbe feebli mind tbat permits itself to imagine tbat it is elevated by a de-bauob." Prof. Walter A. Wyokoff, who died recently, was tbe author of "Tbe Workers," book on tbe laboring man wbioh has retrained vital through a deoade of interesting literature on social conditions. The reason for tbe life of tbe book was tbat it recorded tbe author's aotual experience for a year aud a half as a working man. He lived by tbe labor of bis bands in j field, ditch aud mining camp; ho play ed the game fairly, and did not help himself out by "money from home" or checks from bis publishers. He knew what it was to be out of a job and "on bis uppers." That is why his mater ial was fresh and vivid when he re turned to the professor's easy chair to write the story of bis experience. Practically tbe same may be said of Jack Loudon. Muob of bis literary work reflects actual experience of his life, aud "Martiu Eden," bis splendid story, uow tunning iu serial form in the Paciflo Monthly, is said to be tbe result of crumbs of praotioal knowl edgo swept into a retentive memory, while boariug the cuff's and hardships tbat come with tbe life of a sailor boy. Tbey are making a deuce of a racket about these direotoire dresses, but what is tbe cause for commotion? Do you remember the old fashioned hoop skirt? When a whirlwind came along it took two fellows with all the skill they could master to keep one of them within bounds aud "bouuds" meant almost anywhere so long as tbe girl remaiued inside of them. Tbey were the peekabooesfebutraptions tbat were ever invented, and the outlandish sizes that were worn Mrs. Lincoln wore the most pronounced set of criifbliue Eastern Oregon's Largest and Best The areho value MANY YEARS SESUI the score of better goods for PEOPLES WAREHOUSE ITOIETON, OREGON of any one of her day. Look at an old magazine or book printed in tbe early sixties and sea a pioture of ber ; it is nothing bat a little set of fat cheeks above an expanse of crinoline at least six feet in ciroumfereoce. And then fanoy a waltz with a girl in one oft Lose togs. She bad to lean baok as far as she could in order to keep dry goods from soaring away in the bine vault of heaven and tbat ia what oor mothers and grandmothers wore and they were tbe best people on earth and yon know it When a girl waltzed she was aooorded a epaoe at least ten feet square in order not to "crowd." Every member of tbe community and especially every parent sbouldtake a deep interest in the publio school. It is not enough to pay your sobool tax without complaining, or to know tbat tbe teachers are qualified, nor ia it even enough to keep your children in school regularly. If yon are really interested in this subjeot as yon should be, yon should visit tbe sohool regu larly and persistently, observes the Waitsbnrg Times. Few people have any idea what an inoentive it is to both teacher and sobolar to know that par ents and outsiders are taking a lively interest in their work. We believe tbe "little folks" at sobool appreciate snob interest more perhaps than tbe larger ones. Still the effect is not lost on any of them, and we hope every parent will take a bint from this and plaoe the publio sobool on their visit ing list. Bryan occupies a plaoe today before the Amerioan people tbat vituperation cannot touob, tbat slander cannot reaoh, and falsehood lea vesno trace. His plaoe as a grand, good man of great worth and usefulness isjas se oure as tbe overcasting bills, and bis intelligence ia common and widely diffused.
