ORE.. SEPT. 25 :908 The Hood Eiver Apple Growers Association have jast closed a contraot for 80,000 boxes of the growing crop, and now have noder discossion tbe sale of 150.000 additional boxes. This will be good news to all trnit growing seotioDS of tbe Northwest Forest ex periment etatious will soon be estab lisbed a number of tbe National Forest states of tbe West according to tbe plana which have jnst been oompleted by tbe United States Forest Service. These new stations are expected to do the same for the development of American forests as agricultural ex periment stations have dono for tbe im provement of the country's farms. As tbe first step in this work au ex periment station bas already been es tablished on tbe Coconino National Forest in tbe Southwest, with head quarters at Flagstaff, Arizona. Sta tions in other National Forests will be established later, and it is tbe intention ultimately to have at least one experi ment statiou in eaoh of tbesilvioultur al regions of tbe West. Tbe Missouri River Valley is one of tbe most susooessf ul hog raising soo tioua of the United States, aud corn baa always been tbe basis of this in dustry. Today one of tho most pop ular stock-fattening foods in the Mis souri River region is a mixture of alfalfa meal and sugar beet pulp, which is produced in Colorado. Ad vices recently rocoivod from that state show that numerous new mills are Uo iug erected, and certainly tbe Paoillo Northwest should give this industry every possible enoouraRement and this is partioularyl true since tbe great international concerns like Swift & Co. and others bave deoidod to locate upon the Paoido Coast, and they are now spending million of dollars in buildiug their plants at Portland. A good reliable fattening food equal to corn would make this seotion of tbe United States the very richest portiou of our great republic. Here is the way a show me editor summed up the situation: "All per sons knowing themselves indebted to tbis office are . requested to call aud settle. All those indebted to tbis office and not knowing it are requested to call and find out. Those knowing themselves indebted aud not -wishing to call are requested to stay in one plaoo long enough to enable us to catch tbeni." Fate seems to have no mercy ou tbe poor. We bave no sooner recovered from digging up f )r school books when the rain requires a round of rubbers. Tbis Rooseveltian idea of large fami lies reads all right -in magazine edi tions of tbe Sunday papers, but poor "Dad" at certain periods of tbe year is entitled to some consideration also. It will be interesting reading the next few weeks to note tbe reports of the candidates in the Washington pri mary election jnst held, as to tbeir election expenses. The Washington law provides that eaoh candidate file a sworn statement with tbe secretary of state of all moneys speut during tbe campaign. A Milton peaob measures 11 1-4 inches around tbe waist, and weighs Ove-eigbtbs of a pound says a dis patch. That's nothing. Haines has "peaches" that measure 28 to 86 inch es around tho waist and weigh from 100 to 150 pounds. Haines Reoord. An inventor claims that be has a machine that will enable people to bear Dsh talk. After Stuyvesant Fish's demonstration, Harriman will refuse to subscribe any stook in it. ' Not only will Mr. Roosevelt oharge a dollar a word on bis bunting trip, but he wlil reserve tbe right to shorten some of the words by his own system of spoiling reform. tenor of those utterances, for Senator Hey burn is by nature aud training autooratio, dictatorial and resentful of restraiut hut with amazement that among all that boat of republican del egates who sat supinely and listened to bis destructive utteraooes there was not found one man of courage and spirit to resent bis bold assault upon the rights of tbe people. Senator Heyburn attacked tbe foun dations of representative government wbi u he declared : "I bave always opposed, as I do now. any platform which may show any at tempt to legislate for tbe people. .. You are not empowered to make snob a platform. You may recommend, and if tbe ofntets tbe people eleot find your lecommendations. sound and a base for legislation, they will act If tbey do not Mud your recommendations sound you must not be offended, for you may te wrong. And again when be said: "You are here to recommend, not to pledge." Tbese are astounding doctrines to fall from tho tongue of a senator of tbe republican party whose first plat form in 1856 began with an eloquent demand for "tbe maintenance of tbe principles promulgated in tbe Declara tion of Independence, deolared in clear cut language for laws that would har monize with its principles and invited "tbe affiliation and cooperation of tbe principles herein declared. Senator Heyburn arrogates to him self the power and privilege whioh tyrants have always grasped, of reject ing the will of the people whenever that will may run counter to tbeir own will. "You may petition me, but you shall not direot me. For stub born adherence to that vicious doctrine Charles I. lost his bead and George III. sacrificed tbe Amerioan colonies. Senator Heyburn should be beaten. and be will be beaten if tbe republican voters of Idaho have inherited tbe spirit of tbeir forefathers and bave more respect for tbeir rights and tbeir obildrens rights than for tbe false fe tish of party name. Spokesman-Review. THE WRONG ONE. One of tbe Hawaiian Islands is to be elaborately fortified for a garrison of 15,000 men. Tbe key of tbe Paoillo is a great outpost and it is there as elsewhere. A young man had been oalling now and then on a young lady, when one night, as he sat in tbe parlor waiting for her to come down, her mother en tered tbe room instead and asked him in a very grave, stern way what bis in tentions were. He turned very red and was about to stammer some in coherent reply when suddenly tbe young lady called down from tbe head of the stairs: "Mama, mama, that is not tbe one. o)o) uniniifu fin There is no need of anyone suffering long with this disease, for to effect a quick cure it is only necessary to take a few doses of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy In fact, in most cases one dose is sufficient It never fails and can be relied upon in the most severe and dangerous cases. Tbe people of Idaho must read with amazement the audacious utterances of Sonator W. B. Heybnrn before the republican state convention at Boise not that tbey were surprised at tbe l Tbe lawyer was drawing up En- peck's will. "I hereby bequeath all my property to my wife," dictated Eu peok. "Got that down? "Yes," an swered the attorney. "On oondition, continued Enpeok, "that she marries within a year." "But why that con dition? asked tbe man of law. "Be cause," answered tbe meek and lowly testator, "I want somebody to be sorry that I died. They Take the Kinks Out.
