The Hood Eiver Apple Growers
Association have jast closed a contraot
for 80,000 boxes of the growing crop,
and now have noder discossion tbe
sale of 150.000 additional boxes. This
will be good news to all trnit growing
seotioDS of tbe Northwest Forest ex
periment etatious will soon be estab
lisbed a number of tbe National Forest
states of tbe West according to tbe
plana which have jnst been oompleted
by tbe United States Forest Service.
These new stations are expected to do
the same for the development of
American forests as agricultural ex
periment stations have dono for tbe im
provement of the country's farms.
As tbe first step in this work au ex
periment station bas already been es
tablished on tbe Coconino National
Forest in tbe Southwest, with head
quarters at Flagstaff, Arizona. Sta
tions in other National Forests will be
established later, and it is tbe intention
ultimately to have at least one experi
ment statiou in eaoh of tbesilvioultur
al regions of tbe West.
Tbe Missouri River Valley is one of
tbe most susooessf ul hog raising soo
tioua of the United States, aud corn
baa always been tbe basis of this in
dustry. Today one of tho most pop
ular stock-fattening foods in the Mis
souri River region is a mixture of
alfalfa meal and sugar beet pulp,
which is produced in Colorado. Ad
vices recently rocoivod from that state
show that numerous new mills are Uo
iug erected, and certainly tbe Paoillo
Northwest should give this industry
every possible enoouraRement and this
is partioularyl true since tbe great
international concerns like Swift &
Co. and others bave deoidod to locate
upon the Paoido Coast, and they are
now spending million of dollars in
buildiug their plants at Portland. A
good reliable fattening food equal to
corn would make this seotion of tbe
United States the very richest portiou
of our great republic.
Here is the way a show me editor
summed up the situation: "All per
sons knowing themselves indebted to
tbis office are . requested to call aud
settle. All those indebted to tbis office
and not knowing it are requested to
call and find out. Those knowing
themselves indebted aud not -wishing
to call are requested to stay in one
plaoo long enough to enable us to catch
tbeni."
Fate seems to have no mercy ou tbe
poor. We bave no sooner recovered

the rain requires a round of rubbers.
Tbis Rooseveltian idea of large fami

tions of tbe Sunday papers, but poor

is entitled to some consideration also.
It will be interesting reading the
next few weeks to note tbe reports of
the candidates in the Washington pri
mary election jnst held, as to tbeir
election expenses. The Washington
law provides that eaoh candidate file a
sworn statement with tbe secretary
of state of all moneys speut during tbe
campaign.

Tbese are astounding doctrines to
fall from tho tongue of a senator of
tbe republican party whose first plat
form in 1856 began with an eloquent
demand for "tbe maintenance of tbe
principles promulgated in tbe Declara
tion of Independence, deolared in clear

Senator Heyburn arrogates to him
self the power and privilege whioh
tyrants have always grasped, of reject
