ORE.. JULY 31. 1908 Chairman II. E. Miles of tbe com mittee ou tariff of tbe National Asso ciation of Matrnfaotaiers s.ieras to be Undiog oat tbe real obaraoter of stand patters' promises to revise tbe tariff. Mr. Miles bas labored bard for tb creation of a tariff commission and for the use of tbe knowledge of experts in tlio fixing of soiled ales, and at ouo tim be seems to have tboogbt cougress bad come around to bis programme, but b knows better now. In a reoeut inter view, pnblisbed in the New York Joarual of Commerce, be is quoted as saying: "Information daily aconmulates showing that it is tbe fixed and seem ingly unalterable purpose of Chairman Payne of the bouse ways and means committee to defeat every attempt to ouforoe tbe principles advocated by those who stand for an honest tariff bused upon clear proof. His remarks in pubilo and private show at every turn bis absolute insistonoe that the next tariff shall not be based npon in formation, that it shall be made in tbe dark, that experts shall be employed only as a mere political play and that the next tariff shall be as full of graft and favorism as be and his kind oau make it. . . Electrio lighted farm homes, barns and feed yards aro coming to be no uncommon thing in tbe west A light ing plant is not only a convenience but reduces tbe fire hazard by doing away with milking by lantern light and climbing around iu feed yards and hay mows with dangerous lanterns. Gas oilne ougins aie also becoming almost a modnrn necessity on tbo modern farm. Tbey are doing all tbe big things which the farmers formerly used their horseB and borrowed their neighbors' horses to do as well as all the little things wbiob tired tbe women and boys. All over tbe west farmers ura buyiug automobiles, wbiob have ueooroe so practical that they can do pond on thorn for quiok and long trips, suving their horses for work in the fields which oau not yet be done by oleotrioity, gasoline or petroleum. Over in the irrigation district of Malbenr county is one of tho most uuinuo engineering feats recorded iu the West and the East Oregouian dooms it worthy of mention, iu tbo valley along tbe Malheur river where the laud is level for miles, are two large irrigatiou oauals runuiug side by side for three miles aud so nearly dead level is the ground there that water i una iu opposite directions iu the two ditches. The ditobes come into tbe valley from difi'ereut directions aud trout higher ground aud tbe momentum of tbo volume of water foroes it across the doad level of tbe valley, iu opposite directions. At one end of the valley one ditch pnssos under tbe other iu a Hume. A country merchant of Iowa decided to Liouk away from tbo bid fogy spirit which bad affected hiiu and bis follows for some time. Daringly ho spent 100 in advertising a special sale. The first day of the sale tbe storo took iu almost $1,000; tho next six days ave ragod over $100 eaob. His advertis ing bill amounted to 3 per cent of tbe business he did. He found tbnt it paid. Too niuob care cannot be exercised at this time of the year regarding fires. Tho dry season is here aud great dam age might result from a little careless ness. Especially should campers be careful of fires in the mountains and should remember that tbe laws regard ing vump tires are severe. A striking feu tine of tbo August Mo Clure's one that will bo widely dis cussed is an essay ou "Prohibition aud Social Pbysiohology," by Prof. Hugo Muusteiborg. The distinguished psychologist says: "Better America Inspired tbau America Sober." "The nuoouscions habit of smiling promotes wriukles," says tbe Sioux City Journal. But so does the habit of frowning. Must we koep a straight face ail tbe time? It may interest the iuhii who itwobus into uu Kiupty pocket now ami then to know that the prosout per capita cir culation in the United States is $35.35. Prince Helie dn Sagau says be never wauts to pee America agaiu. Dot America said it aboat Helie first. A Boston man is offering $50 reward for a treatment that will cure a parrot of tbe babit of repeating profanity. Wby not try tbe ax? We believe tbe Chicago News when it says "there is always some man around who is willing to ptoond any kind of a motion." A little garden seed, well tended, will produce a lot of backache. EILLIE SUNDAY. Tbe Christian Herald was formerly edited by Rev. T. DeWitt Talmage. It is now edited by Dr. Lewis Klopsob, who is a Christian philanthropist of fame and learning. He evidently does not like tbe methods of Hilly Sunday, for in tbe last issue of tbe Herald be says: "Evangelist William Sunday deliv ered an address to tbe Presbyterian ministers at Pittsburg tbe other day, which if correctly reported, stamps tbe speaker as a man who has missed bis vocation. Tbe stream of vulgar abuse which flowoa from bis lips migbt have passed for wit on tbe ball field, but it was altogether out of place in the pulpit, especially soon tbe oooasion in question. Certainly, tbe man who could apply to tbe average preaober such choice terms as 'fudge-eating molly-coddle.' 'stiff,' 'salary quack,' 'grafter' and 'candidate for tbe funny bouse' is not one to command or de servo the respect of any American au dience of average intelligence. His proper place is an inteloontor in a miustrel show. "People may bear with Mr. Sunday's eccentrioities in language, aud even with tbe crazy, chair-smashing thea trical tactics, but when be undertakes to revile men who are a thousand-fold abler, more respected and incompar ably better qualified for tbe work than he can ever hope to be, he simply ex poses himself to ridioule. His amaz ing suggestion to tear down tbe semi naries as useless and to 'stand the pro fessors on their beads in mud puddles,' was bis wildest record of flight of ora tory, and shows to what extent it is possible for a man to unmask bis real obaraoter wben he "outs loose," as Mr. Sunday did. It would be a chari table construction to say that his language was that of a man who bad lost bis mental equilibrium. ' "We regret to say that the Christian spirit was conspicuous by Its absence throughout the address. Sucb an in cident discredits evangelism and does moro barm to tbe work than Mr. Sun day can repair." WHAT WATTERSON SAYS. Aooordiug to an emineut alienist there are three great causes of suioide and insanity, each of which begins with "w." Ore of them, and not the least of tbani, is worry. Everyone advises everyone else never to worry. Few persous take the advice, except those who would not worry if the world were coming to an end tomorrow aud they bad murdered their brothers yesterday. The president of a "Don't Worry" club in New York committed suioide the other day. Tbe incident is tbe subieot of no little humorous comment, but it was pure tragedy. What is more patbetio than tbe self- destruction of a man who had promised bimself and his friends that be wonld never lot worry got a grip tipon bis mind? Tho tale of the ending of his life points a moral. Wine, womeu aud song, of tbe quality that kill, a wise man may escape, but worry may sot its faugs in his vitals despite bis every precaution aud bis every reso lution. And vorry, so tbe pbysioiaus toll us, breeds toxins of its own, as well as ti aggravate any physical ail ment that may be preying npon its victim. I It is a great thing to be able not to worry. It meaus a gift from provl- denoe of a oortain sort of physical and mental makeup. : The uegro rarely worries. As a rule, he is free from care. As a race be is immune from oortain nervous diseases. Providence, wbiob gave him for a complexion "tbe shadowed livery of the burnished sun," put more suushine npon tbe inside ol him tbau is bottled up in a half dozen white mon. It is not neoessary to a Don't Worry" club. Very prob ably another worry overtook him and laid bim low. Tbe greatest relief from worry is to seek out someone other than a police man to whom yon may tell your trou bles. A sorrow shared is a sorrow lightened. The general rule for avoid ing worry is to live so that if misfor tune overtakes yon, you can console yourself with the reflection that it is misfortune and not your fault. Join a "Dont Worry" club the test one may te found around a hearthstone if you will, but do not expeot that all of your efforts will rout all of your worries. Wben tbe president of your olub blows out bis brains, bear in mind the fact that he was unfortunate rather than perverse. He did not worry heoause be found it an enjoyatle pastime. He did not refuse the con solation he offered because of obsti nacy. Consign bim tenderly to "tbe soft embraces of tbe sweet, cool earth," and to probable, or at least 'possible, peaoe. Best assured that there can be no punisnment in store for mm, even iu a brightly burning hereafter, some what below tbe level of the sea and somewhat above tbe temperance of Tucson, that will te more of a torture than tbe malady that ended in bis death.
