THE PIONEER WE Annual Reaniun at Weston of Uma tilla County Pioneers, May 28, 29 and 30. A meeting of the Oregon Pioneers' Association of Umatilla County wai held Saturday, and arrangements were made for the Thirteenth Annual Re union which ocours at Wetiton on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 28-29-80, 1903, says the Leader. The following committee chairmen were appointed by S. A. Barnes, pres , ident of the association : Program Dr. F. D. Hasbrouck. Finance B. B. HalL Grounds J. M. Asbwortb. Printing Clark Wood. Decoration R. U. Saliug. Sports D. F. Lavender. Badges 0. B. Williamson. Speakers M. A. Baker. Music J. H. Price. Reception R. M. Powers. Transportation U. W. Proebstel. Concessions Sim J. Galley. Each chairman is authorized to ap point bis own assistant committeemen. It is expeoted and desired that these appointments be made in time to report tbe names at the first committee meet ing next Monday afternoon at three o'olook, when arrangements for the rennion will be more fully disoussed No matter what division of senti ment may occur as to other affairs, Weston is invariably a unit for tbe snocessof tbese annnal reunions, and it is this harmonious and williug spirit which has made tbem so enjoyable in tbe past. It may oonQdentJy be expeot ed that tbe forthcoming eveut will afford plenty of amusement, pleasure and entertainment for all who come. A speoial effort will be made to en tertain the old pioneers themselves who are fast passiug away. J. M. O'Harra, an early settler and leading farmer of the Weston neighborhood, is seoretary of tbe association, and will see that a personal invitation is ex tended to every member on bis roll. Saturday, May 80, is "political day," and will mark tbe closing of the campaign in Umatilla county. While it is evident that tbe republican nom inees will have little or no opposition, they aie expected to come anyway, to see and be seen. The people should be given a ohance to get acquainted with their publio servants, and with no fear of dofeat before tbem the candidates need not seek for votes but will be free to enjoy themselves thoroughly. A candidate who is sure of bis job ongbt to be a very light-hearted and com panionable person. HE HAS NO CHANGE Bryan Will Beat Taft Because Money Power Will Support Him, Says Watterson. Bryan and Taft will be 'tbe rival nominees for president of tbe United States and tbe Issue will bang in doubt. Eventually, tbe money interests will come to the support of Bryan in tbe ' hope of administering a rebuff to Roosevelt. Tbese are propheoies of Colooel Henry Watterson, editor of tbe Louis ville. Courier Journal, in a lemarkable interview given out by bim. "Who will be tbe Democratic nom inee?" was asked. "William Jennings Bryan," came tbe quick reply. "Who will be tbe Republican nomi nee?" ' "Seoretary of War William H. Taft," was the equally firm reply. "Who will be eleoted?" "Anything is possible with Almighty God," was tbe reply. "If bard times continue, Bryan will be the next president. Mo party oan stand against bard times. Seoretary Taft is one of tbe best men in tbe country, but that issue is always pre dominant in American politics." "What about tbe great captalistio interests? Who will tbey favor" "In my opiuiou tbe great capitalistic interests in tbe end will be for William J. Bryan." "Why so?" "Because, if Taft is elected, he will stand obaiged with oarrying out Theodore Roosevelt's politics and tbe Republican seuate will be reduced to obedience to bim. "Tbe corporations then," he con tinued, "will have nothing to bope for, bnt if Colonel Bryan is jnooessful, bis election will be a iebnke to Roosevelt and all tbe president stands for that is to say, it will be a vindication of conservative Republicanism. The Re publican party will then reorganize in tbe seuate and Bryan will be helpless. In my judgment, tbe whole money in terests will eventually support Mr. Bryan as a 'choice of evils.'
