WbeD an automobile bearing Deputy Sheriff Charles Painter and three pris oueis drew up before the Walla Walla court-house at 3 o'olook Sunday morn ing after a bard inn from Wallula, the last of a quintette of alleged horse thieves, whose operations are said to bave cost owners $5,000 and possibly $20,000 were taken into custody, says the Union. Sheriff James Haviland and bis deputies have beeu busy since last fall following olues in the case. tbe arrest of the three men coming as toe onlmination of months of effort expended by the authorities. Those who comprise tbe gang are Paul Kruger, 22, and J. A. Molntyre, 80. who were arrested at Burns, Oregon, and John Tyoke, 45, bis son Jobn Tycke, jr , 19 and his son Riobard Tycke, 16, who were apprenenaea in wauuia Saturday niht- Theflr8t tw at while Tyoke and bis sods are well known residents of Wallula. In these five, the authorities believe they bave cornered the worst of a gang of horse thieves, whose systematic ex peditions bave cost owners of Walla Walla, Umatilla and 3enton oounties a pretty sum. Not ouly bave almost all the owners whose horses were at large on the rauges suffered from the depredations, but a few of tbe smaller dealers bave been broken up in busi ness. At least 800 horses-have been stolen during tbe past year of which number the authorities expect to prove in court that tbe five men seoured at least 77. the amount of three oar load consignments. Cor. maim asd Third, Atbkka, Or, MAIN 83 m Athena, Oregon MS A MISSTATED STAND Representative Barrett Misquoted By Correspondent Regarding Posi tion On Statement No. 1. Tbe anti Statement No. 1 wing of tbe republioau party is doing every thing in its power to bring defeat on candidates who stand for tbe state ment. Id this county the wrath of tbe machine politicians is centered on Representative C. A. Barrett, an avowed exponent of the prinoiple which gives tbe people the power of ohoosing United States Senators, and thwarts the corruptive practices iu voljrsd in electing senators in the leg islatures. The fight on Mr. Barrett is being made for his defeat for the nomination in the primary election which will be held on Friday, April 17. Knowing that Mr. Barrett's nominatioujat the Hon. C. A. Barrett, for Statement Norl , : : primaries, is equivalent to bis election in June, nothing is being left undone by this minority faction of the repub lican party to encompass bis defeat for po nomination. ' " L. L. Mann and Oiaud Steeu, the other republican candidates bave shielded themselves behind the vote catching phrase of "supporting tbe republican for United States Senator, who shall receive tbe highest number of votes in the general eleotion," thus pnnoturiDg Statement No. 1 and com pletely nullifying its precepts and pur poses to give the people the right to choose directly by ballot tbe man who shall serve them as United States .Seuator. But one newspaper in Umatilla county the Pilot Sock Record bus had the temority to thrust a barb di rectly at Mr. Barrett regarding tbe stand he takes that majority role. , As a consequence, his maobiue opponents are bard-put in support of their contentions and therefore "color" whenever opportunity affords. Their latest coloring effort unfolds itself in tbe columns ot tbe Spokane Spokesman Review. It is penned by that paper's Pendleton correspondent and in a politi cal review the statement is made that "Mr. Barrett also says that he will support the party's candidate for United States Senator." Tbe state ment is grossly misleading and Mr. Barrett al once bad tbe Athena corres pondent wire the Spokane paper to that effect. . In .the statement Mr. Barrett made to bis party which is now on file with the- County Clerk of Umatilla Coun ty, is found the following language: "I further state tbe people of Oregon, as well astbe people of my Legislative Distriot that during my term of office I will always voe for that candidate for United States Senator in Congress who has received tbe highest number of the peoples' v"tes for that position at the general eleotion next proceeding tbo eleotion of a Senator in Congress without regard to my individual pre ference, f "C. A. Barrett" Died at Age of 92. Mrs. Sabre Hopper, one of tbe oldest pioneer women in Umatilla county, died at her borne in Nolin, aged 92 years. Mrs. Hopper was a native of Tennessee aud was born on December 20, 1835. She was therefore more than 92 years of ago at tbe time of ber deatb. Her husband, Benjamine Hop per, has been dead for over 25 years. With ber husband. Mrs. Hopper cross ed tbe plains with an ox team in '65, and tbe family settled at Nolin, where they bave lived permanently ever since and where Mr. Hopper died. The Bee Moth. The bee moth, a destructive worm, new to this sdCtioD, has been working havoo among, tbe bee bives in this vi cinity tbe past winter. Tbe moth feeds on tbe honey in tbe comb, tbns depriving tbe bee of its store of food. The result is that tbe bee starves to deatb, and in its place is fonud layers of thrifty mutb worms snugly encased in cones which line tbe bive in layers, situated between tbe casements hold ing tbe comb from wbicb tbe honey baa been extracted by tbe moths. V ' I HE IS LAID TO REST Sterling Worth of W. H. II. Scott Highly Esteemed Character of Man, Friend and Neighbor. One of tbe largest funerals beld iu many years at Athena, was that of W. H. H. Scott, at the Christian oburcb, yesterday afternoon. Miuister Hoveu preaohed a powerful sermon at tbe bier of the dead, aud his eloquent words euologistio of the splendid char acter of the departed pioneer citizen fell as a balm of solace on the grief stricken family and friends of a man whom to know was to love, honor and esteem. The passing of W. H. H. Soolt from this life leaves upon the dial plate of the community in tffcicb he resided for so many years, an ineffaoable niobe. It is iodellibly marked there by bis nobleness of cbaraoter and thn true worth of a man who stood as a man among men. Hospitable, kind aud sympathetic, bis handclasp was the lasting bond of true- friendshin: while his lnvn fnr hio family and rezard for his frionda wnn an attribute resplendent in obaraoter (bat ever sanctioned and upheld all that was elevatiug to bis fellowman. The editor's acquaintance with Mr. Soott extended over a neriod of nearly eighteen years, and it seems to n that we bave never known a better man. And from tbe manv Avidnnnna of esteem in wbiob be was held bv nil. there are hundreds who will say the same. Thus, in brief lived tbe man. W. H. H. Scott. W. H. H. Soott was born in Monte rey county. Illinois. Maroh 10 1841, being at tbe time of bis deatb, Maroh 19, 1908, aged 67 years and 9 days. With his parents, he weut to Sullivao county, Missouri about the year 1855, where he resided untill 1864, in which year be crossed tbe plains to Oregon. On coming to this state, be Settled iu Marion county, where in 1867 he was married to Mary M. Gerking, who has proceeded bim to the grave. To their union was born six obildren, one of whom died in childhood.. Three sons, Joseph N. and Arthur of this city, and William ft of Seattle, and two daugh ters, Mrs." James Potts and Mrs. Otis Ingle, survive him. In 1872, Mr. Soott moved to Umatilla county, where on Gerking Flat west ot this city, be took up tbe homestead which he developed into tbe splendid farm that has sinoe been bis home. He was an aotive and honorable member'' of tbe Christian church of this city, in wbiob be beld an important office for many years and up to the time of his death. IMPRESSION REGARDING TAXES Umatilla County Pays $19 On $1,000 of State Tax. During tbe past few weeks there has been considerable oommeut regarding high taxes. Many theories in support of arguments have been injected into controversaries aud "that man Strain" has been mentioned frequently in these disoussions. r 'I here is an erroneous impression among tbe people ot tbe county that a high assessment causes a bigb state tax. Asa matter of faot tbe state taxes are apportioned each year as provided in Sec. 8091 of Bellinger & Cottou's code, pages 1053 and 1504 of Vol. 2. According to this table Uma tilla Conuty has to pay $19 of each thousand dollars of state taxes, or 4.9 per ceut. Assessor Strain, in company with deputy Pinkertou, has been in tbe city this week ratiug the valuations of city property. lie oalled at tbe Press office and in an interview said: "High taxes iu the oity of Athena and other towns are mainly due to lo cal levies. "If property owners will examine their tax receipts covering oity pro perty, they will notice that Athena city tax equals that cf tbe county aud state and that tbe school tax is nearly halt as much as the oity tax. "There are 14 mills within tbe oity, six mills ooonty and state, six mills oity and 2j mills special school tax. I did not raise assessments in Athena last year and am in no way responsible for high taxes. "Tbe board of equalization was com pelled to go up to f nil value, and tuoy accordingly multiplied my roll -all of it by four, iu order to get tbe O. K. & N. assessment ttTfoll valne. "If this raise by tbe board of equal izaton has produced more than tbe full value of any property, I will reduoe tbe assessment in 1908. Tbe supreme court overruled tbe exemption law and this made tbe poor man's taxes higher than formerly." Prepare for Great Meeting. .Tbe merjbers of tbe Methodist Epis copal cburob in this city are making extensive preparations for their pro tracted meetings, wbiob begin April 22. Evangelist Corradine of St. Louis, one of tbe strongest and bent known cburob workers in tbe east, will be hereto take charge of and conduct tbe meetings. " LUCKED BOXES ONLY Improvement to Be Made at Athena Post Office Beginning On First of April. X, ' Begu ginnins with Anril first, whinh is me commencement of tbe seoond official quarter, a new departure will be inaugurated at the Athena post office. ; The new regulations include the in stallation of a seotion of equipment oontaining 65 lock boxes wbioh will replaoe a like number of call boxes. Postmaster Githens recently purchased two sections, consisting of 130 lock , boxos, but only one Bectioo of 65 boxes will be installed at present With the putting in of these addi tional look boxes tbe lobby of tbo post office will remain open until 8 :30 eaoh evening and all day on Sundays, tbns affording renters of lock boxes the pri vilege aud convenience of securing tbeir mail at any time optional. With tbe introduction of tbe new regime, general delivery will be con fined to one honr on Sunrlnv. from 9 in 3 o'olook p. m. after wbioh hour, the general delivery window will remain closed until Monday morning at tbe usual hour for opening tbe offloe. Tbe new method will undoubtedly be greatly appreciated bv the natrons of the offloe. However, there inav be objections on the part of a very few. but even these will see the advantnpn of having a looked box, when they taae in consideration tbe convenience of being able to secure mail, at all hours. It is postmaster Githens' inteutiou to abolish the call box Bystem entirely if possible, and be has made arrange ments to secure as many sections ot look boxes as tbe patronage of the office will demand. It is believed that in a short time all regular pacrons of the offloe will carry keys to look boxos, thus confining tbe general delivery de partment to transient patrons.
