Putnam, pastor of the M. E. cliurch. was in Pendleton Tuesday. Lester Swaggart of Pendleton, trans acted business in this city Wednesday. Lonis, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Mr. and Mrs. Frank King of Wes ton, passed through Athena yesterday, on their way to their ranch in Juniper. Mrs. Mraz, of Colton, Wash., came down Saturday and is a guest at the home of ber daughter, Mrs. I. M. Kemp. ,Hamp Booher of Weston delivered uogs in Aiaena saiuiaay to a ioobi buyer. He received 5 1-1 cents per pound. D. B. Jarman returned yesterday from a short star at Hot Lake, some what improved in regard to his rheu matism. Miss Mattie Birch, of St. Anthony, Idaho, is expeoted to arrive today, on a visit to ber sister, Mrs. Chester Walker. Tbe entire force of the Mosgrove 'Mercantile Co., is engaged in unpack ing and marking the big stook of new spring goods. Chester Counick and wife, new ar rivals in the oity, have leased the Alf Johnson oottage of Mr. Rogers, the present owner. yMrs. Eva Boddy came over from her home in La Grande yesterday and will visit ber many friends in Athena for a short time. Miss Hazel Crossen, the Pendleton elooutionist was in the oity Wednes day, aooompanied by Miss Lor en z of the East Qregooian. Mr. Austin Gilliland, operator at the O. R. & N. station, with bis mother, has moved into the Smith cottage in the west part of town. Mrs. Jane Creighton, who has been visiting relatives in this vicinity for several weeks, bas returned to ber home at Albion, Wash. Mrs. David Taylor bas been confined to her home with illness the past week. Her mother, Grandma Gerking, is im proving from her long illness. An exceptionally large and well se lected stook of new spring and summer goods baa been reoeived by the Mos grove Mercantile Co. this week. New goods are arriving daily at the Jarman Department store. A good trade is reported from this enterprising store both in Athena and Weaton. J(W)Fred Kershaw is in Portland this weeK. Rodine put a $200 draft in a registered letter at Nanton, Alberta, and mailed it to Adams. Mr. Rodine followed the next day but the registered letter bas not shown op yet He now believes the clever mail robber got away with it between Bonner's Ferry and Spokane. Swaney was down from Pasco this week, visiting friends. Mr. Swa ney was formerly eleotirioian for the Preston-Parton Co. in this city, but is at present engaged in railroading. Mrs. Luna is already here. H. C. Caton is having his town res idence remodeled, for the oocupanoy of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Koontz, who will move as soon as convenient. The Caton family are in their farm home near town. F. B. Snrbeok, who bas been under the oare of Dr. Heisely for inflamma tory rheumatism is able to be np, and will soon retnrn to the store, which in bis absenoe has been conduoted by his sister-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Zeph Lookwood left Friday for their home in Portland, where Mr. Lcckwood is employed as street oar oonduotor. They enjoyed a pleasant visit of two weeks with rel atives here. Mrs. Cox returned Wednesday eve ning from Portland, where she bas been for the past two weeks trimming and seleoting stook for her new milli nery store, whiob she has opened in her residenoe on Main street. H. L. Wilhelm of the Coast Maga zine, completed bis work in Athena Monday, and left bere for his bome in Seattle. Boddy who bas been ill for a good portion of the last two years, will go to Walla Walla Saturday where be will enter a hospital. Sslhe 'Whitman College Glee Club, twenty voioes strong, sang its way into tbe appreciation of a fair sized audi enoe at tbe Athena Opera bouse last evening. The Club has appeared bere in past years, but never before did it give snob universal satisfaction as it did last night "A bout twenty-two yonng people sur prised the family of Mr. and Mrs. Cass Cannon Tuesday evening after they bad retired for tbe night, and arousing tbem from their slumbers, proceeded to enjoy themselves. A jolly old fashioned candy pull was tbe main feature of tbe festivities. Ardin Ernest, one of tbe infant twin sons of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Gerking, died Friday, of pneumonia. The little one had been ill for several days.
